CHAPTER I.

INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study Electricity, as defined by Merriam-Webster, is a fundamental form of energy observable in positive and negative forms that occurs naturally (as in lightning) or is produced (as in a generator) and that is expressed in terms of the movement and interaction of electrons. In daily life, people use electricity in different ways. Whether it may be their phones, laptops or the bulbs in their ceiling, the use of electricity is everywhere. With the emergence of technology, there are many sources of energy we use to acquire electricity today. Examples include solar energy or fuels to be generated into electricity. But the problem lies when some sources are depleted. There will be a difficulty to generate electricity. So, the researchers have looked into sources of energy where it can be renewable. The researchers have found that through kinetic energy, it can be generated into electricity through the use of piezo electromotors. With the use of pressure, it has generated a voltage that can be converted to electricity. The researchers had conceptualized the idea of using kinetic energy to generate electricity and charge a battery. This study can provide a way for people to have a source of electricity that can be done through walking. It can give the person convenience because only walking is needed when you need to charge your power bank or battery. This study can also be a call to a healthier lifestyle due to the main action of this study is movement.

B. Statement of the Problem This study aims to answer the following questions: 1. What is the point of the experiment? 2. Will there be a change of results if there were variations of moving such as jogging or running? 3. What other power cell can the shoe charge? C. Hypothesis Our hypotheses are the following: 1. With the use of walking, the shoes can generate electricity and can light a LED or charge a battery. 2. There can a difference in results if we change the activity from walking to jogging or running. D. Significance of the Study In this fast-paced world, some people don’t have the time to charge their phones and will always need to hurry because of their agendas. Through this product, it can be a convenience for them if they can charge their phones or power banks through the use of walking. In situations wherein, they can’t charge their phone when they are outside, they can use this product.

Also, the product can also encourage people in the community to walk more. This method of attaining electricity can benefit the person walking because not only will he be able to use the electricity for batteries, it can also make them have a healthy lifestyle through walking. Conducting this study can show that through activities such as walking, it can provide a source of electricity. This study can be further experimented to make more products that uses this method of generating electricity. E. Scope and Limitations This study is made for those who wanted the convenience of charging a battery through the use of walking. This study must test out if it can generate electricity to charge a battery. This study can be for those who walk often. The study will be tested by a person, most likely limited to one due to the reason of people having different foot sizes. The researches will stick to one subject in conducting the trials of the experiment. The study will be conducted at school where the subject can walk. Then we will later change the activity to jogging and running to determine any differences. F. Definition of Terms For the study to be understood, the terms given are operationally defined: Kinetic Energy - A form of energy that is generated due to motion. Electrical Energy – A form of energy that is generated due to the flow of electric charge. Piezoelectric Effect – It is ability of certain materials to create an electric charge when pressure or stress is applied to the material. Piezoelectric Plate – A device that uses the piezoelectric effect. Pressure is applied to the device and can be converted to an electric charge.

Capacitor – A device that is used to store an electric charge. It consists of conductors separated by an insulator Diode – A semiconductor device with two terminals. It allows the flow of current to go in one direction. Rechargeable Battery – An energy storing device that can be charged again. LED – Light Emitting Diode; is a semiconductor that generates electricity when light passes through it.
