Administrator at Pine Knoll Nursing & Rehab Center, 770-834-8243, [email protected] In today’s world of budget shortfalls, cutbacks and layoffs, we here in the nursing home are the same as everyone else, striving to contain costs while maintaining quality of life for our residents. As a result of this, we are benefiting more from the efforts of our volunteers and wonderful family members. While volunteers and family members may not perform any kind of hands-on care for our residents, they can make a huge difference in a resident’s outlook and mood. Volunteers and family members help by visiting, sending the occasional letter or card, bringing their pets (who have been pre-approved and have proper vaccination records on file) or coming in to sing a song or play the piano. Nursing home residents benefit tremendously from volunteer manicurists, volunteer hair dressers, volunteer pastors and volunteer companions. Some nursing home residents have experienced so much loss in their lives – loss of independence, loss of loved ones, homes, and most significant, a loss of a sense of usefulness. For some residents, particularly those who do not have family close by, there is a sense of “What is left to enjoy?” Visitors! Many times what is needed to make a significant difference in a resident’s life is simple companionship, someone to talk to or to hold a hand. Readers, I encourage you to learn about your local nursing homes and assisted livings. Bring your children; let them see that there is nothing to be nervous about. While the residents in a nursing home may sometimes look or act a little different, they are people just like you who can really benefit from the bright smile of a child or a dog’s happy waggly tail. There are a couple things to keep in mind about volunteering at your local nursing home. Right now, with the flu season upon us, we are discouraging large groups from visiting, particularly school groups. If you do visit, please make sure you are feeling healthy and are not having any illness or fever. Another is that you generally have to have a criminal background check, complete some basic paperwork and get a TB skin test if you plan to spend more than ten hours per week in the nursing home. For pets, check with the nursing home’s Activity Director for further guidelines. In most cases, though, pets are welcome. Adopting a nursing home resident is a great way for teens to get volunteer hours for school organizations and looks great on college applications. It is also a way for our active older adults to give back to their community and to see how fortunate they are to be active older adults, living an independent lifestyle. It is a gift. In these tough times that we keep hearing about, it costs nothing to adopt a nursing home resident and come to visit him or her. You will find that the emotional return on your investment is amazing.

Talking on a cell phone can cause extreme embarrassment By Tim Collins – Publisher I will never forget this experience as long as I live. As you might expect, I tend to get quite a few calls on my cell phone, since we are a small company and I tend to “wear a lot of hats”. The other day, I pulled into the post office to check the mail. As I was walking in, I was speaking with a customer on my cell phone, and as luck would have it the phone made its call waiting beep. I usually don’t answer these calls, preferring to finish my current conversation, then calling the person back. After getting the mail, I ended the conversation I was on, and being conscious of time management skills, I began to scroll through my phone to see what number had just called. I was still checking as I approached my silver minivan, engrossed in solving the mystery of the missed call. I walked up to my van, reached for the handle, opened the door, and looked into my car to see a very shocked looking middle aged woman sitting in the driver’s seat. I am not sure who was more surprised, her or I, but I quickly realized I had not opened the door to my silver minivan, but to a silver Ford SUV that obviously did not belong to me. Apparently I just saw the silver color out of the corner of my eye, and figured it was my vehicle. After apologizing profusely, we both started laughing about it. But I definitely learned my lesson about focusing too much attention on my cell phone. She probably learned a lesson about locking her door too! Neither one of us will probably forget the experience.

Carroll County helps meet needs of underinsured While the nation debates the responsibility of government in healthcare, Carroll Electric Membership Foundation (Carroll EMC) and the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation have partnered to meet some of the most critical needs of Carroll County’s underinsured. Carroll EMC donated $7,500 to the nonprofit Lighthouse Foundation to help provide eye exams, eyeglasses, eye surgeries, and hearing aids to underinsured residents of Carroll County. These are people whose sight and hearing are severely compromised and who have nowhere else to turn. The services have allowed many recipients to return to work. Brian Carr, a Carrollton resident who received cataract surgery last August, is one such recipient. Carr is a tough, determined man. For three years he endured cataracts that made his vision blurry and right eye nearly blind, but he wasn’t about to give up. Carr had been an architectural draftsman for 25 years, and he refused to let near-blindness prevent him from working. He painted the keys on his computer’s keyboard white, and used a black marker to identify each key with a large, readable letter. Well, almost readable. Carr still could not work at his usual speed, and he admits to misspelling a lot. It took him all day to complete a project that he previously could have done in 30 minutes, but he kept on working at the fastest pace his vision allowed. The cataracts also made driving impossible, but Carr did the best he could. He walked everywhere he needed to go. Last March Carr submitted an application to attend a free eye clinic through the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation. He went to the clinic in April, and by May was having his initial appointments for cataract surgery. Carr’s surgery was complete in August and his life was changed. Although he can drive again, Carr now enjoys walking for another reason. His renewed sight allows him to take pleasure in the world around him. “Since surgery, I can see all the colors. For three years, I couldn’t see blues or purples. Pretty much all I saw was shades of yellow and white.” Carr has washed the paint and black marker off his keyboard, and he can now work at the pace he was able to before cataracts. Perhaps equally important, he can break from work to gaze out the window and watch bumblebees in the bushes beyond. “It’s amazing!” He says. “I can see a bumblebee 20 yards away! No one can possibly imagine what a thrill it can be to watch a fat, black and gold bumblebee zooming around in green leaves.”

Spoiling your pet with rich fatty human food can also cause your pet to not want the food you regularly feed him. Christmas Decorations - Don’t leave out presents that have food items in them. Holiday plants that are poisonous to your pets include the berries of mistletoe, holly, hibiscus, Christmas rose and poinsettia. ‘Tunes for Tots’ to be held November 7

Last year the Marine Corp Reserve Toys for Tots campaign helped 4,950 children in West Georgia. This year, as everyone knows, the need will be much greater. On November 7th at the VFW fairgrounds, a very special community day culminating with a concert featuring great music will take place. Titled “Tunes for Tots”, the event will feature acts including George Britt of the Lowell Opry House, Everthird, Dana Rampey, Mark Lyle, Cody Christman and many more. Held from 10:00am to 9:00pm, the event is free for children. For others, admission is either a toy for children ages nine to 12 or $5. America has a proud history of everyone coming together in times of great need to help one another. This year – probably more than anytime in many of our lives – is one of those times.

What’s in Your Child’s Pocket?

Contact her at [email protected] A few weeks ago I was washing my son’s clothes and I pulled out a Ziploc bag full of crushed homemade M & M cookies. Irritation was my first reaction. Why is there a bag of crushed cookies in his pocket when he is allergic to them anyway? But God quickly gave me an insight that I will always cherish – a reminder of my son’s big loving heart. The week before, we had been at a scouting event where they gave out these cookies. He checked to see if I had tried them. I thanked him and told him they tasted good. He must have gotten another pack that was either left over or that someone didn’t want and kept them for me because he knew I liked them. Even though he can’t eat many foods, he goes out of his way to make sure that I enjoy them. I often turn down a brownie or a piece of chocolate because I don’t want him to feel he is missing out, but he always insists that I take it because he knows I love chocolate. Those crushed cookies in his pocket were a reminder of his love for me. The monthly theme for our Cub Scout Pack at that time was “Cub Scout Pockets” – a focus on hobbies and collections. My experience, along with this theme, really got me thinking about the things I have found in my son’s pockets. Instead of these items simply being an annoyance, I have chosen to look at them through my son’s eyes – seeing both the value he has placed on those items and the positive character traits they symbolize. Butterscotch candy or fruit snack wrappers are a common find. I usually wonder why he didn’t just throw them away instead of shoving them back in his pocket. Now I’m grateful that he puts them back in his pocket instead of throwing them on the ground. At scouts, we remind them to “Leave No Trace” - to leave a place

better than you found it. I’m glad that lesson is sticking with him. What would a pocket be without the occasional army man? I’ve often wondered about the need to have an army man or Lego soldier with you everywhere you go, but now I think about them as his heroes. It could be a reminder to be brave, a role he wants to emulate or simply a toy he enjoys, but in any case it’s a positive role model and one that I’m glad he’s chosen. Whistles, carabiners or pocket knifes bother me when I find them because they can be expensive and I don’t want them to be lost or ruined. On the other hand, I can appreciate that he’s learning to “Be Prepared” and developing the traits needed to someday leave our nest and fly out on his own. These are the times when I get teary, thinking about my son slowly growing into a man. I think I’ve probably found more rocks over the last few years than anything else. Many times these rocks don’t look special to me, but to him they must be treasures for they were worthy of being examined and kept. Pulling rocks from his pockets reminds me of many trips to amusement parks, stores, people’s houses or any place where they were rocks. He was often more interested in those than in whatever we were planning. Do these rocks represent a developing hobby, an appreciation of nature or an item kept for playing a game with later? I’m not sure what all of his thoughts are behind those rocks, but they do make me smile. I loved rocks as a kid too and it pleases me that even though my son is growing up, he’s still content with the simple fascination of collecting rocks. Another common find are coins – pennies, nickels, dimes and sometimes even quarters. Where he finds them all I do not know, but I’m glad that when he sees a penny on the ground, he doesn’t see a cent, he sees money and he understands the value of saving it. Our kids’ church sends home a paper for the kids to do each week to reinforce the lesson. Being the one who puts together the lesson and creates the take home sheet, he used to not take one and say ‘my mom has them’. Lately, he has been taking one, folding it up and keeping it in his pocket. He may not be remembering to pull it out and actually do it on his own, but he is developing selfreliance and a desire to have his own Bible study sheet. Another recent development is carrying a wallet, which is often found in a pocket in the dirty clothes pile. It’s a Cub Scout wallet and it too carries many of his treasures, such as his Whittling Chip card (which shows he has earned the right to carry his pocket knife) and business cards from adults he admires or places he likes. He also has some money in there that he received for his birthday. When I am checking out at a store and he sees a donation jar on the counter, he pulls out a coin – maybe only a penny – but with a serious countenance, he deposits his donation. The first time I was surprised that he did it completely on his own. In the car, I asked him about it and he told me it was just the right thing to do. He has continued to do this and we’ve had several great discussions about making choices. I’ve also had to explain to him the difference between the donation jars and the ‘take a penny, leave a penny’ bowls, but I’m happy that he has seen the example we’ve tried to set and has chosen on his own to follow. Doing the laundry is always a chore and it can be a pain to empty out those pockets. But next time, ask God to give you a glimpse into the hearts, minds and lives of your children. For your child, it might not be a pocket; it might be under a bed or at the bottom of a purse or a backpack, but the same principle applies. The things we find can help us understand our kids, show us the things they value and depict the heart attitudes they are developing. Use these insights to direct your parenting if you see something that needs to be changed, but also celebrate and cherish the unique and wonderful things you see developing in your children.

The West Georgia Futbol Club will host the 23rd annual Sugar & Spice Classic Girls’ Soccer Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, November 21st and 22nd. It is expected that 150 teams from all over the southeast will attend. The event is open to girls’ teams, from U8 through U19. A portion of tournament proceeds will go to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. With the anticipated number of visitors to be in excess of 8000 over the weekend, the local economy should get a boost from added revenues to local restaurants, motels, and other businesses. Atlanta Beat players will also be present to meet the players and sign autographs. In the past, the Sugar & Spice Tournament was hosted by the former Douglas County Soccer Association, and games were played solely on Douglas County soil. Over the summer, the West Georgia Futbol Club was born of a merger between DCSA and Carrollton Crew, and includes players from all over Douglasville, Carrollton, and Villa Rica. As a result of this merger, more locations have become available for the Sugar and Spice Tournament matches to be played. Sponsorship opportunities still exist. VRHS Students recognized for demonstrating ‘Wildcat Way’

Bay Springs Middle School’s cheerleaders performed in the Auburn Half-time Extravaganza on September 26, 2009. The cheerleaders were invited to attend with over 1100 other girls from Georgia and Alabama. The cheerleaders attended an all day practice session, and then performed at half-time of the Auburn versus Ball State football game. The girls are pictured with members of the Auburn University Band’s Dance Team. ing we normally take so for granted, things like water; everyday we go to the faucet expecting it to be there and then one day you turn the faucet on and the water is gone and immediately you’re reminded of all the times you forget to say “thank you” for the gift of water, (wasn’t it wonderful when you no longer had to boil it?) so as we approach this Thanksgiving season let’s take some time to reflect on what being thankful really means. When most of us think of Thanksgiving our mind wanders to the food and the excitement of being with family, not the purpose for which this day was originally set aside for---Giving Thanks--and what better way to express that thanks than to share what we have with others. During the past few weeks if you were fortunate enough to not have experienced loss yourself then I would like to encourage you to reach out to others who have …we all know friends, family or neighbors who have lost loved ones, homes, transportation and cherished memories. Think of something special you can do as a family during this Thanksgiving season to touch some else’s life. Look around, do you have things you no longer use or love that could help your friends and neighbors get back on their feet? Let’s make the most of this Thanksgiving season by sharing some of our “excess” with others, they will be blessed, you will be blessed and you will be amazed at how freeing it is to regain that space again. We all have things we are keeping because “we might need them someday” and it may very well be that “that someday” is now. My husband and I were riding through the neighbor hood next to ours, where so many of the homes were damaged, to see if we could be of any assistance, and this thought occurred to me: not in every case but in a lot of cases (since more basements were affected than anything else) the things that were now being thrown into

You have to know mowing heights, when/how to plant, how much to fertilize, how to spot diseases, etc. Just the thought of pulling out the equipment is often enough to contemplate turning over the task to the experts. On the other hand, your home may have been a significant investment and now requires accurate and constant care. In this scenario, how can you afford not to hire an expert? With so many tasks needed to be performed, you may think you need to hire a comprehensive company or several different companies to properly maintain your home. Ultimately all parties had a hand in this miscommunication because the contractors and the homeowner did not provide enough information to each other. In the end, as the homeowner, you are ultimately responsible for how your landscape looks.

On Being a Temporary Single Parent

This week I have the great privilege of keeping my grandkids while my wife and their parents are part of a mission team to Africa. My schedule, by my choice, has always been packed and wide open. Sheryll and I think life at full throttle is fun. We did it when our kids were in school, so I am not taken back by having to handle the “school kid schedule”. I will admit that I had forgotten the extra dynamics of school age kids, but I re-adjusted fairly quickly with help from some good friends. Here are some things I am learning this week that you may find helpful: 1. The need for good connections. For instance, instead of having to stay with me while I performed a wedding, my grandson was able to play in the woods and watch football with one of his buddies because of the connections I have with that family. Sometimes I hear people talking about how we need to “get outside the walls of the church.” Well, this was outside the walls of the church and, as an interim single dad, this family really helped me. Might not seem like a huge deal, but if you ask my grandson if it made his life richer and more satisfying he would tell you yes. And that is what John 10:10 in the Bible says Jesus came to do. 2. The need to stay focused and keep your priorities in order. After just a few days of homework, bedtimes, and all the other stuff school age kids have going on, I realized how easy it would be to let my priorities change from what God has for me to what

life has for me. It would be easy to make the kids and their needs my most important focus and let everything else slip. This is where having an “and” instead of an “either-or” mindset are important. Making sure these kids do well in school and have what they need to do that is important. But leaving my other Kingdom of God priorities undone is not an option. Sure it requires me to be a good planner, but allowing the vision for life to be defined by the demands of the public school system will result in a smaller life than God intended for me. I want my grandkids to see me pursuing big life and big purpose in God’s Kingdom because I want them to pursue their big life and big purpose. And that is just as important as making sure they get enough sleep, look good for school and have all their homework done. I know our God wants you to have a rich and satisfying life and sometimes what is “good” will take the place of what is “God.” Be a great dad or mom, train up great kids, and make a huge difference in the rest of the world too! Anne Frank said, “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” It is interesting to me that often times I avoid serving others. But I am always blessed every time I take time to serve others. Jesus clearly modeled service during his time on earth. He fed people both spiritually and physically. He healed people. He even humbled himself and washed the disciples feet. Matthew 20:28 sums it up, “just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Serving others is an action that needs to be modeled for children. It is a wonderful thing to serve along side your children. When families serve together several things may occur. Service builds character, creates an attitude of giving and expands one’s horizons. What a wonderful investment for the family and the community. Service is a win/win situation. Be creative when looking for service opportunities. Even little ones can serve. medical directory & guide The Use of Ice or Heat to Treat Injuries

By Justin B. Rich, MPT, CSCS and Eric Morante, PT, MBA, CSCS of Accel Physical Therapy. Accel has 2 locations - one in Villa Rica at Mirror Lake Boulevard and one in Douglasville In our practice, we are often asked by patients whether they should apply ice or heat to their injuries. In this month’s article, we will outline the indications when and how to use ice or heat for treatment, as well as provide contraindications and conditions wherein the use of each modality must be avoided. Ice therapy is best used within the first few minutes to 72 hours after an injury. The coldness of ice makes it a vasoconstrictor (causes blood vessels to narrow) thus reducing bleeding and swelling to the injured site. Ice can also be used for chronic or overuse injuries or to decrease the amount of inflammation after repetitive stress on a body part i.e. a baseball pitcher icing his shoulder after a game. Ice should be applied to the injured body part for 10 to 15 minutes at a time several times a day. Allow the body part to return to normal temperature before re-applying. The application of ice can be uncomfortable initially and may take the body a few minutes to adapt. Extra care should be taken when applying to areas that have little muscle or fat such as bony area of the body as these may be more susceptible to frostbite. The use of ice is contraindicated for those that are suffering from ailments such as RSD and Raynaud’s disease as this may cause an exacerbation of the symptoms. People with diabetes and peripheral neuropathy should pay extra attention as the injured body part may be desensitized and get frostbitten. In contrast, heat is a vasodilator (causes blood vessels to open) and best used for chronic injures or injuries that have no acute inflammation or swelling. Ideal injuries that benefit from heat treatment include chronic back pain, degenerative or osteoarthritis, and stiffness of the muscle or joints. Heat should be applied for 15 to 20 minutes at a time. Use enough layers between the body part and the heat source and never sleep on top of a heat pad to avoid getting burned. Be watchful for areas that have little muscle or fat as these are more vulnerable for burns. The use of heat is contraindicated in cases of acute inflammation or swelling (the first 72 hours of an injury). Heat must not be used on open wounds and areas that have infection or where cancerous tumors may be suspected. Persons with diabetes and peripheral neuropathy should pay extra attention when using heat as desensitized areas may get burned absent of the person’s awareness. Injuries that cannot be resolved by ice or heat alone may indicate something more serious. In this case, consulting with a physician may be the appropriate course of action.

Let the Eating Frenzy Begin!

These are the Thanksgiving foods that we look forward to all year. But, these foods, and the holiday season, can be a scary time even to the most health conscience. As the season approaches, some may feel a sense of panic and dread knowing that their commitment to healthy eating is about to “fly out the window”. We tend to conveniently forget about our good health, and instead, take the opportunity to overindulge in every way possible. We may even forgive ourselves because the holidays only come once a year. Did you know that the average Thanksgiving dinner has over 2000 calories? Did you know that the average American gains around 7 – 10 pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day? The holiday season is largely centered on food. Everywhere we go, someone is putting a box of chocolates in front of us, a friend offers us a glass of wine, supermarkets are displaying tempting goodies, and we are baking sweets that we normally don’t bake. All of this, coupled with huge dinners, parties, and festivities of the holiday season makes maintaining control a huge problem. If we allow ourselves to lose control completely over the holiday season, there is a high risk that we will continue to eat unhealthily long after the holiday season has past. Falling into the trap of unhealthy eating is a hard habit to break. Despite millions of New Year’s resolutions that are made each year regarding healthy eating, many people never get around to breaking the habit at all. In fact, researchers at Washington University have reported that only around 22% of New Year’s resolutions make it to February. While trying to lose weight during a season of cocktail parties and lavish feasts may not be realistic, you can maintain your weight – and still participate in the festivities without all of the guilt. The main rule to remember is moderation. Don’t try to cut out all high-fat holiday favorites. Instead, choose small portions and fill your plate with lower fat choices, such as apples, cranberry dishes, breads, and pastas. Here are a few more tips to get help us have a more healthy holiday season. • Don’t go to Thanksgiving dinner hungry. We often eat faster and more when we are hungry. So, eat a wholesome breakfast and lunch on the day to avoid overeating at dinner time. • Thanksgiving dinner is not an all-you-can-eat-buffet. Fill your plate half with vegetables, one quarter with a lean meat, and the rest with a starch. • Eat slowly and stop when you are full. • Eat smaller portions. • Watch your high fat items. Limit yourself to a smaller helping size. • Drink plenty of calorie free water. This will help fill your stomach and keep you hydrated. • Exercise. Use your extra time off during the holiday season to exercise. This will help to burn off the excess calories and fat consumed over the holiday season. Food and holiday gatherings go hand in hand. So join in and help yourself to some tasty treats. Just watch your portion size and remember moderation. With a dash of discipline and a pinch of planning, you’ll have a great recipe for holiday fun without the regret that many of us feel the next time we step on a scale.
