Is CD Laddering Right for You?
Submitted by Amy L. Brown, 228 S. Carroll Rd, Villa Rica, 678-840-5000, www.amybrown.biz With the recent volatility in the stock market, people are hesitant to put their entire nest egg into the market. Additionally, with the economy creating tight times for families, it’s often necessary to make sure funds are available if and when we need them. For those investors who are either reluctant to jump head first into the market or those who may have a need for cash, the strategy of laddering Certificates of Deposit (CDs) may be appropriate. CD laddering is the process of structuring your investment into CDs to take advantage of the higher rates afforded by longer-term time deposits, yet maintaining liquidity by arranging it so that equal portions of the invested money is available periodically. To accomplish this, you begin by buying numerous CDs with various maturities. For instance, let’s say you have $25,000 to invest. Rather than investing the $25,000 in one CD that matures at a designated time, by laddering CDs, you may choose to invest $5,000 in each of five separate CDs. In this example, you would then purchase a 1-year, 2-year, 3-year, 4-year, and 5-year CD in equal amounts of $5,000. After one year, when your first CD matures, you would invest it in a new 5-year CD. Each year, a CD will expire and, if the funds are not needed, they will be reinvested in a new 5-year CD to take advantage of the higher interest rate typically offered by a 5-year CD as compared to the 1- or 2-year CDs. This approach allows you the comfort of knowing that a CD will mature each year in case you need the money, yet still take advantage of the higher rates typically offered for longer maturities. Staggering your maturity dates also helps smooth out the volatility of the market. If interest rates rise during the year, you will have money available to invest in a higher rate CD. Or, if rates fall, only a portion of your investment dollars will need to be reinvested at the lower rate. CD laddering may be a strategy that’s appropriate for your lifestyle. Plus, with the guaranteed interest rate offered on CDs, you will be able to plan your future with confidence. Talk with your insurance agent or financial expert for more information.

Business
By Tim Collins – Publisher – Villa Rica News & Views As the publisher of Villa Rica News & Views, I am in touch with tons of local businesses every month. I wanted to share with the readers that although things are still not back to where they were before the recession, many businesses I have spoken with in the last month have said that things seem to be improving over what they were like earlier in the year. Some other positive signs are a significant increase in real estate sales this entire year. Our economy here was heavily dependent on real estate and construction before the recession, and this has been particularly hard hit. So, if this trend continues, it will make a significant difference in the state of our economy. All of these factors point to the economy heading in the right direction. I also feel that in the long term, the recession and credit crisis will be beneficial to the US and local economy because most American’s have reduced their credit and are paying down their debt, which makes for a much more stable economy in the future. Most businesses that I know have streamlined their companies, and are more lean and efficient, meaning that when the economy improves they will be more profitable. We have made several moves like this, and I feel very confident about the near and distant future for News & Views. One more thing that I want to stress to our readers is that whenever possible, PLEASE shop locally. You can buy just about anything here, and not only are you helping a local business owner in most cases, you are often saving jobs of people who work there, many of whom are your neighbors. If you buy locally, you are also helping to fund the local government, which is obviously very important. So PLEASE SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL MERCHANTS, AND ESPECIALLY THE BUSINESSES WHO HELP MAKE THIS PUBLICATION POSSIBLE FOR YOU TO RECEIVE FOR FREE!

Understanding Medicare Advantage Plans
By Melissa Murphy. Administrator at Pine Knoll Nursing & Rehab Center, 770-834-8243,
[email protected] A trend has developed recently among our admissions and referrals. We are seeing more and more referrals whose main insurance is a Medicare Advantage HMO or PPO instead of traditional Medicare Part A, which is what most seniors rely upon to pay for their initial stay in a rehab center or nursing home (in insurance speak it is called SNF for Skilled Nursing Facility). Traditional Medicare Part A pays for up to 20 days at no cost to you in a rehab facility (SNF) following a three day hospital stay. Medicare Advantage Plans are health plan options that are part of the Medicare program. If you join one of these plans, you generally get all your Medicare-covered health care through that plan. What each plan pays for is different, and most times, you must use the doctor and other healthcare providers that are specified, or the plan does not pay. One of the major disadvantages of most Medicare Advantage plans is that it DOES NOT pay for the 20 days in a rehab center or nursing home at no cost, and most charge significant co-pays after the first 3 or 5 days. Sometimes this means that hospital discharge planners and family members are left scrambling to arrange safe home care on a short notice or have to pay privately for home care because the senior cannot afford the co-pays. You should know that even if you have Medigap insurance or Medicaid, Medigap policies and Medicaid do not work with Medicare Advantage plans. Medicare Advantage plans are offered through a wide variety of insurance carriers. Some carriers have information booths at the drug store or grocery store. Some insurance carriers market their products by telephone to Medicare members. The goal of the insurance carriers is, of course, to sign up as many members as possible. Sometimes this means that explanations about the details are given very quickly, very briefly and very vaguely. Before enrolling in any Medicare Advantage plan (Medicare HMO or PPO), please be sure to ask: • How long do I have to stay enrolled? • What happens if I want to dis-enroll? • Is there a list of doctors I must use? • What happens if I see a different doctor? • What happens if I need to go to a rehab center or nursing home (the technical term is SNF)? • What are my co-pays? (Remember, your supplemental policies and Medicaid will not work.) The best rule of thumb with this, or any other major decision for that matter, is to communicate with someone close to you before committing yourself. Most times, family members are not even aware that mom or dad has signed up for these plans, and that complicates matters tremendously if you are unable to speak for yourself.

Douglas County Chamber Singers now holding auditions
The Douglas County Chamber Singers will be holding auditions throughout the summer for their upcoming seventh annual concert season. The Chamber Singers are a 40 voice auditioned choral group. Membership into the Douglas County Chamber Singers is by audition. During auditions, the conductor will assess the quality and range of the voice and how well the singer can read music and sing a part. The singer should be prepared to sing a prepared solo, which can be a classical, religious, or popular musical piece of the singer’s choice. Auditions also consist of singing a scale and sight reading an alto, soprano, tenor or bass part of a hymn. Contact conductor Vickie Orme at 770-489-0503 to schedule an audition.

Raising Sticky Kids
By Kerry Patuka. A Villa Rica resident who is a degreed and certified educator, licensed minister and founder of Drive 5 Ministries, a consulting, speaking and training ministry for churches and children’s ministry. Contact her at
[email protected] It may seem that a good part of our parenting life is spent trying to keep our kids clean and not sticky, but developing kids that stick with stuff is important. Through this they learn about commitment, perseverance, positive attitudes, doing their best and more. The beginning of a new school year brings with it the opportunities to try many new and exciting things, but how do we grow kids that pick something and stick with it. 1. Listen to your kids and observe their strengths. Think about your child, his strengths and what he enjoys doing. Also consider his social skills, age and past experiences. When talking with your child, make note of the things he likes to talk about, but also listen for the way he talks about it. Take the time to really know your kids, help them develop their own interests and guide them in selecting activities that might work for them. God has a great plan for each of them and our job is to help them discover it. 2. Do your homework. As parents, we need to do our prep work first. Research activities that your child expresses an interest in or activities that you think might be a good fit for him. Check out the activity, the places it is offered, the time commitment, the cost, the parental involvement, the schedule, the age groups and more. Neither you nor your child wants to be surprised after you have already made the commitment. All parents need to be their children’s advocates, but you really need do to your homework if you have a child with any special needs. 3. Limit activities. Too many activities makes it impossible for your child to stick with all of them and the more than are involved with, the harder it is to keep a commitment to them all. You know your child and you’ve done your homework, so first limit the activities they can choose from and then limit the number that they can participate in this year. There are a couple ways to do this. You could simply limit the amount of activities they may be involved in throughout the coming year – the younger the child the fewer the activities. You could also divide the activi-
ties into categories – sports, arts, social activities, educational activities and faith-based activities. Then you set the parameters, such as allowing your child to pick one from each category. 4. Make a commitment. Make sure your child understands that he’s sticking with this activity for the entire year or season. You are making a commitment of your money and time and they should be taught the value of that, as well as the importance of being a part of team, keeping your word and finishing. These are all parts of being sticky. 5. Acknowledge their feelings. No matter how much research you do or how well your child does in selecting activities, the truth is there will be days when he just doesn’t feel like going and he may pick an activity he ends up not liking. That’s okay and that’s life. These times are wonderful teaching moments. Let your kids know its okay to feel that way and that everybody feels that way sometimes. Talk about the importance of being sticky and how it will benefit them in the long run. 6. Focus on the positive. There has to be something positive about every activity. Even if the only positive thing is that your child has learned she doesn’t like a certain sport or he didn’t enjoy a certain activity. Part of growing as a person is learning what we do not like, what we are not good at…so that’s a positive. 7. Finish well. So the chosen activity was a bust. But sticking with something through completion is a great feeling. Help your child feel good about his stickiness. Maybe, he didn’t enjoy the activity. The instructor or coach may not have been someone you or your child liked. The time or location may not have been convenient, but that doesn’t mean your child can’t finish well. He can still have an attitude that says thanks for the opportunity even though this activity is not one for me. Let your child know how proud you are of him for being sticky.

Green Style
By Joann Britt, Round 2 Consignments, 490 Bankhead Highway, Carrollton, 770-214-*5599 There’s a green revolution that you may not know about, and it comes in all colors and sizes. Thrift stores and consignment clothing stores are recycling designer clothing all over the country. The best fabrics and the best designs last for years, but there are only so many times you can wear one outfit yourself. What to do with those brand name duds from last year or last season? Or the ones you’ve never taken the tags off of, but know you’ll never wear? Call a local consignment shop and see how their program operates. Usually they will take clean, new or nearly new clothing for a season, and if it sells, you get 50% of the selling price. Jeans go for $8 to $10, blouses range from four to ten, depending on style and brand. A closetful of summer clothes can go a long way toward paying for a new (or consigned!) fall wardrobe. It’s a good deal all around – you earn a few bucks, other shoppers get a great price on a new outfit,
28
Villa Rica News & Views
and you can all feel good about ‘recycling’ merchandise that is taking up space in your closet. Some items which are a great deal for buyers and sellers in any season: • Baby clothes – these can go through several families before they wear out. • Blue jeans – in any condition, from brand new to old and torn, a best seller. • Tee shirts – always a great price, especially the trendy labels. • Kid’s clothes – playwear, Sunday and holiday clothes that don’t break the bank. It’s easy to be a green consumer – consignment shopping and selling is a classic way to ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’, and have the fashion you want at prices you can’t beat.
Douglas County residents plan Labor Day Tea Party
A group of Douglas County citizens, frustrated with increases in government control and spending, have organized a Tea Party rally for Labor Day, Monday September 7, 2009. The event will be held from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Clinton Nature Preserve, and will feature radio talk show host Herman Cain as the keynote speaker. Cain is a vocal proponent of limited government and the FairTax. In addition to Cain’s keynote address, local speakers will address a variety of issues that impact people’s everyday lives. Joel Aaron of WGKA 920 talk radio and founding member of “We The People REVOLUTION” will emcee and host the event. Citizens frustrated with out-of-control government spending, the national deficit and health care reform issues should attend the Tea Party to hear what they can do to get involved and stay informed. Residents are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets due to limited seating at the facility. For more information about the event please visit the group on Facebook at http://groups.to/douglasteaparty/ or contact, Maureen Miller at

Teaching Children to be Organized
By Joyce Maxwell, owner of ReJoyce N Order, Professional Organizer and speaker. Awarded “Business Associate of the Year for 2007” by Douglas County Chapter of the American Business Womens Association. To find out about having an organizing service come to your home, you may call 770-941-0201 or visit www.rejoycenorder.com With school in full swing, it’s a great time to teach your children to get organized! It doesn’t matter if you are a parent, grandparent, neighbor, or teacher, few things will benefit them more than learning at an early age to establish good work habits. If you would like to make a real impact on a child’s life teach them the skill of being organized, and yes, it is a “skill” that can be learned. There are actually very few people who are “born organized. Make being organized a part of every day life. It’s important to teach kids that every item they own has a home, where it needs to return when they are through using it. Let kids know that they need to be responsible for their own possessions. Establish simple routines like making their own beds and keeping the floor clear. Have a ten-minute clean-up every night before bedtime. Sort and containerize. Teach kids to group similar items together, and then find appropriate-sized containers that hold them. With colorful markers, write the name of what’s inside. This makes it easy for retrieval, and, even more importantly, for clean-up! For kids who can’t yet read, consider gluing photos or drawings of the objects on the front of the containers. The clear shoe organizers that are made to hang on doors works great for storing small items like markers, tape, scissors and it’s a great way to utilize small spaces. Help them downsize. Often, the sheer volume of stuff in a kid’s life - the toys, sporting equipment, books, collections, clothes is overwhelming, we are a nation of abundance and we can teach our kids a wonderful lesson on sharing by helping them downsize. Every six months have them donate seldom-used toys and outgrown clothing. Establish the habit of “new toy in old toy out” system so some purging takes place daily or weekly. Talk to them about the importance of sharing with others less fortunate. Establish a great homework routine. Use an in/out box system for school papers that need to be seen by caregivers. Have a designated study area. Keep it well-stocked with supplies so kids don’t have an excuse to leave the area. Don’t save every project your child makes. Post them temporarily then take them down and store them in a drawer, tote, or even an unused pizza box. At years end help each child choose their favorite ten. Until next month, God Bless and don’t forget to pick a few daisies along the way.

Allternative Gym serving the special needs population
Angie Gomez, founder of Allternative Gym, started the gym when she began thinking about her daughter, who had cerebral palsy. She asked herself, “In a few short years – when she’ll be in her late teens - would she still be going to therapy? And if she’d been discharged from therapy, where would she go to continue the good healthy foundation we’d built through therapy.” She figured a gym would be ideal, but was afraid she would not feel comfortable going to a regular gym filled with perfect young men and women exercising normally. And so, the Allternative Gym dream was born. Angie made it her mission to learn and experience a wide range of therapies and treatments. Ideal for patients with cerebral palsy, autism, brain/spinal tap

Education
trauma, down syndrome, obesity and stroke survivors, Allternative Gym offers two programs - the intense exercise program, which consists of a two-on-one ratio. Where a professional and a trained helper both trained in intensive model of (therapy) adaptive physical fitness work with the patient. Depending on the patient needs, the program is a three to four week session with the patient being seen five days per week for four hours per day. The intense program focuses on strengthening and flexibility with the use of massage therapy, Adeli/Neuro suit “Intensive Suit therapy”, universal exercise unit, and progressive resistance exercises. Programs are individualized for specific needs. This intense program is ideal for those who want to enhance and improve developmental and functional abilities (ex: balance & coordination, gait, etc.). Increasing intensity of physical fitness therapy for a short period of time shows improvement in functional measures, both in children with mildto-moderate or in children with severe motor deficits, for example, cerebral palsy and related disabilities. The second program is the intensive physical fitness program “membership”. The gym membership consists of a one-on-one ratio. Depending on the patient’s needs, the program is two to three times a week for two hours per session. The sessions generally last one to three months.. The gym memberships focus on strengthening and flexibility with the use of massage therapy, universal exercise unit, and progressive resistance exercises. Three of Allternative Gyms methods of treatment are the ADELI suit, the Universal Exercise Unit and the Hyperbaric Oxygen Unit. The ADELI suit, originally designed for the Russian space program, offered cosmonauts (in a weightless setting for extended periods) the “compression resistance” their bodies needed to preserve muscle tone. Allternative Gym’s founder, Angie Gomez, trained for six weeks under one of the Russian doctors who developed the ADELI suit. The suits, composed of bungee-like bands, help put a body (one with limited motor control) into proper alignment. With a cerebral palsy patient, for instance, the muscles don’t know how to work. By performing precise and intensive movements, they “retrain” the brain to build new pathways. Repetition builds strength along with correct patterns of muscle movement. Only a handful of facilities in the world have these suits. The Universal Exercise Unit (also know as the The Cage) features bungee cords attached to the sides and then fixed to the waist. By providing support and balance to user, it allows them to practice exercises that would otherwise be difficult or impossible. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) clinics exist throughout the United States. Patients are using HBOT to heal damaged tissue, fight infections, promote the growth of new blood vessels, reduce pain and inflammation, recover from surgery and treat accidental injuries. In the 1600’s European doctors observed that their patients healed more quickly at sea level versus in the mountains. The decreased atmospheric pressure in the mountains prevents adequate oxygen tissue saturation. Early Literacy: the Foundation for Learning and Life
By Molly Golemo, Primrose School at Brookmont, 4460 Brookmont Parkway, Douglasville, 770-577-8181,
[email protected] Research has shown for decades that being read to and having interactive experiences with books are key predictors of a child’s later school success. Many parents wonder at what point they should start reading with their children. Interestingly, a love of reading begins early on as infants or, some say, even before birth. When you begin to read books to your little ones, point to the pictures in the book and talk about them in an exaggerated fashion. What you say doesn’t necessarily have to match the words in the book – you can personalize the story to make it even more engaging. Making the time to read together is a must if you are on a mission to raise an active reader. Robert Needlman, M.D., author of Dr. Spock’s Baby Basics and member of the Primrose Schools Education Advisory Board, suggests that one of the most important things about nurturing a reader is to read with a child from a very early age. “There’s no prescription for this, the only prescription is to allow some time each day that you can sit down, connect with your child, and read together. The main thing is to allow it to occur in a way that’s joyful, that conveys enjoyment to the child – from enjoyment the rest will follow.” Selecting the right books is a key factor in helping make the time you and your child spend reading a very special time. Books that really “work” have engaging, distinct illustrations and simple, rhythmic language. Children particularly enjoy books that are repetitive or ask them to participate and anticipate what comes next. Another important factor to remember when choosing books for your child is to select ones that you like yourself, because you’ll probably read them in a more animated, connected manner. Chil-

dren love to hear the same book read over and over again which is another good reason to make sure the books you choose are ones you won’t easily get tired of. You will naturally foster an appreciation of literature when your child sees that you also take pleasure from a book. Try these tips to help your family create a fun and engaging literacy-rich environment that will help build an early foundation for a successful reader: • Surround children with age-appropriate books • Read stories to children daily from infancy and encourage them to participate in the story • Always keep favorite books in the car for “waiting” periods and long trips • Ask your child’s teacher for a list of books that relate to what is happening at school; buy or borrow these books from the library and read them together at home • Older children, preschool and above, who have been read to will proudly “read” their favorite familiar books aloud. They will usually retell the story as they turn the pages and point to the illustrations. Sometimes children will make up entirely different stories to go with the pictures. This is a significant stage in literacy development because children are demonstrating that they know books are meant to communicate stories. They are “getting” it. Children come into the world on a mission to learn how language works, and parents talk and sing with them to support their understanding and their ability to communicate. Reading books with them is another powerful language support tool that enables children to put together an idea of how stories and written language work. Cognitive development needs a surrounding supportive relationship to flourish, so go grab a book and begin reading to your child today!

Storms
There are certain aspects to storms that are intriguing, even beautiful. Ever notice how fascinating it is to watch the approaching clouds as they darken and gather strength? Or why it is that people must be warned to evacuate when a hurricane is approaching? Then there is that group of people we call storm chasers who actually try to get in the way of tornadoes. Most of us think they are crazy, but we will make sure we watch the video they capture while doing it. Once a thunderstorm has passed through, the sky seems so clear and the air smells so clean. Even the devastation brought by hurricanes results in newness—new building, communities, and of course, zoning laws to make structures more capable of withstanding the next storm. We all go through storms, the weather type and the other ones that come into our lives—economic, relationship, health storms and more. When the storm turns from something interesting to watch into something threatening our life, we sometimes make poor decisions and increase the devastation. By taking a look at what can be learned from the weather storms we face, we can find some do’s and don’ts for handling the emotional, economic and relational storms we face. Preparation - The people and places that best weather storms are those who prepare for them. They give heed to the warning signs and use the advance notice to board up windows, add sandbags, even evacuate. Many times we know a storm is coming in
our lives, but we choose to ignore it, hoping it will just go away. Then, like those who ignored the hurricane warnings, we need to be rescued. Learn to recognize the storm triggers in your life and develop positive, scriptural coping skills for meeting them head on. Learn when to evacuate and when to stand your ground. We are going to face storms—Jesus promised it—so why not develop a storm plan? He gave us a great tip on where to start—build a solid foundation. Examine the foundational aspects of your life—your finances, relationships, emotions, and health. Are they solid, built on God’s Word? Jesus promised us that the Word would stand when everything else failed. Great preparation starts with solid foundations. Aftermath - Examining the results of previous storms lets us know where we were weak. We are able to determine which kind of trees are most susceptible to snapping in a strong wind and which materials best withstand the flood waters. Look at the past storms you have endured. Where did your life give way? What emotions snapped and broke, causing more destruction as they fell? The people who learn to “fail forward” are better equipped to face the next one. God’s Word describes his people as palm trees. An amazing thing about palms, during storms they grow in diameter and become stronger. Make a decision to not only weather the storms you are facing, but to use them as a catalyst to become stronger. Paid Article by The Church at Mirror Lake, 7501 Permian Way, Villa Rica, GA 30180. Communication
It is amazing to me how communication has changed over the years. My grandmother was born at the turn of the century. She experienced many major innovations over the years from the automobile to the telephone to the television. She passed away before cell phones were common to everyone. Since we never lived in the same state, I enjoyed writing her letters. Letters provide a more intimate form of communication. One way God chose to communicate with us was through written form. Over hundreds of years through various individuals He communicated His love for us. Some of His letters are historical, some are poetic while others are narrative. From the beginning through the end of the Bible the love of God is apparent. God clearly values communication. It is fascinating to study His Word discovering truths He chose to communicate through His Word. If you want a good place to start, begin by reading one chapter in the Book of Proverbs each day. By the end of the month you will have read the entire Book of Proverbs and given the Lord an opportunity to speak to you through His Word. Family Worship Center to hold ‘Boundaries’ class - learn to establish boundaries in your life
Having clear boundaries is essential to a healthy, balanced lifestyle. A boundary is a personal property line that marks those things for which we are responsible. In other words, boundaries define who we are and who we are not. Often, Christians focus so much on being loving and unselfish that they forget their own limits and limitations. When confronted with their lack of boundaries, they ask: Can I set limits and still be a loving person? What are legitimate boundaries? What if someone is upset or hurt by my boundaries? How do I answer someone who wants my time, love, energy or money? Aren’t boundaries selfish? Why do I feel guilty or afraid when I consider setting boundaries? My name is Brandi Eckman and I am in charge of the the women’s ministry at Family Worship Center of West Georgia named Daughters of Jerusalem. I would like to invite all ladies to join us at FWC to experience God’s delivering power as we journey through the book “Boundaries”. Growing up in a dysfunctional family and having an extremely abusive past, I found it very difficult to establish appropriate boundaries in my life. At the age of 27, when I turned my life over to the Lord, my life was a complete disaster. I had trouble saying no to everything that hurt me and trouble saying yes to the very thing that would help me. God revealed to me, through his word and this book, that I had a problem saying no because I didn’t respect myself. When I was young, a boundary was crossed in my life that was not supposed to be crossed. I then continued down a downward spiral of self destruction, allowing everyone and everything in my life that was slowly killing me. God began to show me that I needed to take responsibility for my own life starting, with the word NO. I was stuck in a cycle of rebellion and codependency not knowing the way out. Thank God that he is faithful and worked along with my desire of wanting to be free. I can now say that once a victim of abuse, I now am a victor! If you are sick and tired of being sick and tired, and desire a change that is permanent, please come and join me with many others and begin to change your life once and for all. The first class will be an introduction and testimony. The class will last nine weeks. and will be held every Sunday, starting the last Sunday in September beginning at 6:00pm. The cost is $17 which includes the book Boundaries along with the participation guide. Please call 678-462-5522 (ask for Brandi) to reserve your spot by the 13th of September.

Swine Flu
Provided by Charles R. Cooley, M.D. of M.D. Minor Emergency & Family Medicine, 770-456-0911, 209 Cooley Dr. Swine flu could strike up to 40% of Americans over the next two years. The World Health Organization (WHO) says as many as two billion people could become infected over the next two years – nearly 1/3 of the world population. WHO believes the world is in the early phase of a new pandemic. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that twice the number of people who usually get sick in a normal flu season would be struck by swine flu. In a normal flu season, about 36,000 people die from flu and its complications. Five percent to 20% of people get the flu every year. The CDC has declared Georgia as one of the states with widespread influenza. Spread of novel H1N1 virus is thought to be happening in the same way that seasonal flu spreads. The flu virus spreads through the air when a person who has the virus sneezes, coughs, or speaks. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose. One alarming fact is that the swine flu virus is spreading in the summer months while it is hot. Typically, the flu season peaks in November and then again in February and March. CDC officials fear an explosion of cases in the fall, when children return to school and the weather turns cold, making the virus easier to spread. So how can you protect yourself and your family from the flu? Get vaccinated! With the threat of swine flu on the rise, it’s critical that you get vaccinated for seasonal flu. Everyone should also take everyday preventive actions to stop the spread of germs, including frequent hand washing. People who are sick should stay home and avoid contact with others in order to limit further spread of the illness. If you or your child begins to experience flu-like symptoms, you should be tested for the flu as soon as possible.
What is Physical Therapy?
By Justin B. Rich, MPT, CSCS and Eric Morante, PT, MBA , CSCS of Accel Physical Therapy. Accel has 2 convenient locations in Villa Rica at Mirror Lake Boulevard and in Douglasville We often have new patients come into our clinic with questions about physical therapy, who is the appropriate candidate for physical therapy, and what to expect with a physical therapy treatment. “What is Physical Therapy?” According to the American Physical Therapy Association, a physical therapist is a health care professional who diagnoses and treats individuals of all ages, from newborns to the very oldest, which have medical problems or other health-related conditions that limit their ability to move and perform functional activities in their daily lives. Physical therapists are experts in speeding up the healing process and developing plans to return to activities of daily living as quickly and safely as possible. We are skilled in techniques to reduce pain, restore strength and mobility, and prevent disability. “Isn’t Physical Therapy only for athletes?” A common misnomer is that physical therapy is only for athletes. Athletes make up only a small percentage of our patients. We see patients from school aged children to senior citizens for problems from shoulder, neck, low back, and knee pain to dizziness and decreased balance.
Medical Directory & Guide
We also work with patients with disability after orthopedic surgery such as knee replacement, rotator cuff repair, and back and neck surgeries. In many cases, physical therapy is used to avoid invasive, expensive, and complicated surgeries. “What does a Physical Therapist do?” Physical therapists use individualized treatment plans and programs that are tailored to each patient. On the initial visit, the patient is evaluated and a plan and goals for treatment are formulated. From there we work side by side with the patient to reach these goals. We use modalities for pain relief and inflammation reduction like ultrasound (sound waves that decrease swelling, heat tissues, and speed tissue healing), electrotherapy (electrical current which reduces pain and swelling), as well as hot packs and cold packs. Physical therapist use hands on massage, stretching, and manipulations to decrease muscle spasms and increase joint movement. Along with modalities, physical therapist use and prescribe specific therapeutic exercises in order to restore strength, stability, mobility, endurance, and balance. We also strive to educate patients on techniques with body mechanics, work station changes, and modifying posture in order to avoid future problems or flare-ups. “How do I get started?” In the State of Georgia, physical therapy is only provided by a Licensed Physical Therapist. In most cases, the sooner you are able to begin treatment the better and is covered under the majority of health insurance plans

7th Annual September Saturdays Festival To Honor Heroes And Families
The 7th annual September Saturdays Festival will be held Saturdays, September 12th and 19th, on the grounds of the Douglas County Courthouse, and the whole community is invited to join in the fun! The festival goes from 12 noon – 6:30 p.m. each Saturday, with the movie presentation at 8 p.m. Admission and parking is free. Each Saturday, the free festival includes: • Community Marketplace – businesses, arts and crafts vendors, individuals, professional organizations, charities, Churches, schools, and more can distribute information, sell goods, let people know of their services and abilities – it’s a cross-section of Douglas County all in one place! • Food Court – where local and regional restaurants and caterers have their goods for sale! • Kids Areas – inflatable games, slides, trains and other activities for kids and the kid in all of us! • Exhibits – information presented in a fun way each weekend. • Music, Music, Music – School choruses, Church choirs and community choruses in concert every 30 minutes on the steps of the Courthouse! • Movies – after the festival ends, the stars come out, and so does a family movie on the side of the Courthouse! Bring your lawn chairs or blankets! Saturday, September 12th, is Heroes Day, our annual salute to heroes on the Saturday closest to September 11th, the day of the terrorist attack on America when everyday heroes answered the call of duty to their fellow man. Our everyday heroes include fire/ EMS, police, Sheriff, active military and reserves, veterans, E-911 dispatchers, teachers and mentors. These heroes will be honored during the festival afternoon, and many of these groups will have exhibits. Heroes Day this year will also feature a competitive Car and Motorcycle Show during the festival hours, and awards will be given in decade categories as well as specialized categories. Featured in the Car and Motorcycle Show will be the Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Show Car, the Aaron’s Rental Dream Car, the Mayberry Police Car, celebrities from WSB Radio’s Traffic Team, and chances to win passes to the Richard Petty NASCAR Experience. The Atlanta Braves Experience will also be on hand on Heroes Day for kids and sports fans. Parents can also help protect their children by having a computerized child ID developed for them using new technology that can help law enforcement in the case that your child ever needs to be found. The Flint Hill Lodge Masons are offering this free service inside the Courthouse on both September Saturdays. The Red Cross Bloodmobile will be on the festival grounds; please consider donating a pint of life! Saturday, September 19th, is Family Day, and it salutes families of all compositions – whatever you consider family – and being a part of the Douglas County family! In addition to all of the regular festivities, Family Day will also
feature the Touch-a-Truck Experience all afternoon, and kids can climb in, on, over, and through all sorts of fire and law enforcement vehicles, the Sheriff’s Department mobile command post, the mobile jail, the Department of Transportation’s bucket truck, front-end loader, and dump truck, and many more cars, trucks, and pieces of heavy equipment! Children will also be able to venture across the Boy Scout Rope Bridge, and enjoy 4-H Horse Club Pony Rides. The Atlanta Hawks and Thrashers Street Tour will also be on hand on Family Day, and team representatives will conduct sports clinics throughout the afternoon, as well as having fun activities for all to enjoy. Tanner Health System will be on board on Family Day with its Health Fair, a chance for all Douglas County residents to receive information on individual and family health issues. Free prescription discount cards will be distributed each Saturday to anyone who requests one – the discount cards may provide up to 40 percent discount on prescriptions if you don’t have prescription insurance. The Census Bureau’s tent each Saturday will be the train station where residents will be encouraged to “Get On Board the 2010 Census” as they get on board the free train ride. The “Canned Film Festival” begins at 8 p.m. each Saturday night with a free movie showing on the side of the Courthouse. Moviegoers are asked to bring a canned or staple good to the movie to benefit The Pantry, a Douglas County food bank serving hundreds of our friends and neighbors who need assistance each week. The Heroes Day movie is a live-action family movie, and the Family Day movie is a 3-D adventure movie complete with the funny glasses! Call the movie line at 770.920.7303 for movie titles! Thousands of Douglas County residents have enjoyed the September Saturdays Festival since its inception in 2003. The purpose of September Saturdays is to bring our community together in a fun atmosphere so that old friends and neighbors can meet and greet, and new friends can get acquainted. Admission to the festival and all its attractions and features is free. Parking is also free and is available on the Courthouse grounds (limited), the Transportation Center behind the Courthouse (with free shuttle service), in the parking lots of neighboring businesses, and at Douglasville First United Methodist Church (with free shuttle service). All booth and car show registrations benefit Communities in Schools of Douglas County, the 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization associated with the Douglas County School System that focuses on helping kids stay in school and prepare for life via afterschool programs and one-to-one mentoring to at-risk students in Douglas County schools. The September Saturdays Festival has raised over $40,000 for charity since its inception. More details concerning September Saturdays are available at the event web site, www.SeptemberSaturdays.com. Vendors can still register for Community Marketplace booths on-line or by calling 770.651.2039. Booth (non-food) costs are $35 per week, and vendors must provide their own tents, tables, and chairs. The booth registration may be tax-deductible, depending on the vendor’s individual tax situation. September Saturdays is a program of the Douglas County Board of Commissioners through its Department of Communications and Community Relations. For more information, call 770920-7593.
