Dreaming about the silky clothing The words national integration, unity, harmony, negotiation etc. have become mere meaningless rhetoric’s that are being uttered. The international peace keeper’s humorously look at things as nonchalant spectators. The self seeking political leaders take initiatives towards peace talks while pushing the ethnic issues into much more contradictions. National issues are simply allowed to deteriorate. The politics of the south would not prefer to free itself from the hard – line majoritarian thinking. Allowing contradictions to further establish even after long and bitter experiences will achieve no beneficial results. The ethnic forces are adamant, and do not allow for any compromise at the negotiating table but intransigently putting forward poisonous racial issues.

The attitudes of JVP and JHU to carry on their racial propaganda in a unilateral manner appear to be a move to disregard the president. Dishonest act which contradict the agreement reached in Geneva emerge with regard to ceasefire agreement, disarming the Para military forces, issues relating to run ours stating that amendments are being made to the agreement. All these political Thamashas looking from the past perspective should be discarded as mere things which do not make any fruitful impacts. Beside, the issues that emerge on the elections to the local government bodies disturb even the president. Discussing issues like nationalism, national integration, peace efforts etc, are absurd things as the nationalism itself has become a mockery. The politics of nationalism is in state of bewilderment. Constructive political perspectives for the well being of the future of generations are being gradually eroded away from the thoughts of the political parties. Political forces lack the ability to foresee the future. The document called Mahinda Chindana and the interpretation of it creates an illusive account in the hearts of the ordinary Tamil masses. The political forces and the ruling leadership work towards creating feeling of hatred against the Tamil speaking population and inciting racial, religious and linguistic hostilities which are the so-called requirements of political power of today. Propaganda among the Sinhala population are being taken forward which can create an impression that negotiation of any type with the liberation tigers or devolution of

powers of any type would be detrimental and would end up with the division of the country. Peace efforts cannot be successfully negotiated with racial elements like JVP which always exert pressure and coerce from several directions. This causes confusions to Mahinda Rajapakse while the leader of the opposition Ranil Wickramasinghe and the peace facilitators look on pathetically. No one is ready to believe that Mahinda Rajapakse’s political stand and the Ranil’s (swallow and vomit) political attitudes can go together at any particular circumstances. Constituting a national government is beyond imagination at a situation where views have come up about holding local government elections and talks about general elections. Meanwhile the former president Chandrika appears interfering into all political activities as she holds the leader of the SLFP. It won’t be an impossible thing for her to become the party leader. She is at present holding it and her future strategies could be to ousts Mahinda Rajapakse. The political forces of the south go against peace building although they preach much about peace building. They joined the self interested forces and carry on childish activities which destroys the future of the country. Accelerating economic development in the country could be possible only in an atmosphere of peace and harmony. The ethnic hardliners still cry for the ouster of Norway for the negotiating process. Norway’s special peace envoy Jon Hanson Bower has arrived with a new slogan that Sri Lanka’s ethnic issue is unique and not parallel to any other ethnic crises in the world. His statement could be considered as the view of not only Norway but of the international world. There can not be sense in the actions of those who propagate peace and national integration while engaged in the promotion of racial activities. Sustenance of permanent peace can not be achieved until the southern rulers who continue their deceptive politics, give up their suppressive rule with the southern racial policies. The politics of peace in Sri Lanka a demands a confirmation of the lessons learnt by the Tamil leadership that arrived at a determination of acquiring for themselves whatever that were not offered at the negotiations. Geneva talks were talking place when distrust prevailed between parties. At present the ceasefire agreement itself is in trouble. The sentiments revealed in order to appease the racial elements have pushed the politics of peace in a dilemma. There would be no economic emancipation without political peace being established. Without peace the can not march forward the free and civilized world. By attempting to promote peace the Sri Lanka’s national politics have become dilapidated.

Nothing can be achieved out of the constitution that failed to provide anything other than the president’s rule and the unitary structure. He national peaceful political attempts are being suppressed at this stage. With beliefs that major conflicts are not to be anticipated the self interested politicians put forward proposals that disintegrate the country and these moves have become part and parcel of the country’s history. If the peaceful political era is to be downed among other things upholding meaningless pieces of law should be stopped. Now it is being highlighted among the international forces that it is the Sinhala racialism that is in the way to the national peace and permanent political solution. What distance the journey seeking peace is going to cover without being aware of the path for it and the destination in the proper manner by simply following the illusive Mahinda Chindana. In what direction the Odyssey that could be initiated by the Sinhala leadership without wholeheartedness is going to set its floor? What is to be done? The national peace that has been treading for a long time along a dilapidated path is now trembling on the verge of death.
