elcome to this first issue of VivaLife, the country’s premier online lifestyle magazine that promotes living life to the fullest. As the name implies, at VivaLife we believe in a life lived vivaciously. Learning from our past and planning for our future, we live life wholeheartedly in the present, seeing opportunities in life’s myriad challenges. We believe that realizing the full potential of life comes primarily from accepting yourself for who you are and respecting others for who they are. It is this live and let live attitude to life that we celebrate through VivaLife our digital magazine.

television did not knock off radio, online e-magazines, and their e-book counterparts on Kindle and other e-readers, will not usurp printed books and magazines. Online publications will coexist alongside other media outlets, forming an integral part of the pie and reinforcing publishing as a whole.

People have often asked us why VivaLife did not pursue the traditional print path of lifestyle magazines. We believe that digital or e-magazines are the way of future publications. All over the world, the prevailing sluggish economy and the accompanying dramatic drop in advertisement revenue have led to many publishers finding it economically unfeasible to continue their operations.

But, if you are a die-hard fan of printed lifestyle magazines, you will be happy to hear that as the impact of traditional printed media declines, print equipment manufacturers are looking at alternate technologies to keep abreast of demand. Among options on the anvil are street-corner print-on-demand kiosks that will, at the push of a button, produce glossy, bound magazines which can rival any newsstand Besides, the increasing propensi- publication. ty, especially among the younger generation, to read and respond Currently, a similar service is with content online has led to available from some publishlower uptake for printed matter. ers who will print and ship, from And finally, the inability of stodgy their list of publications, a sinprint to compete with the instan- gle exclusive copy for you. IKEA ... more than just a furnishing store F

or many people a visit to IKEA is a modern rite of passage. A ritual performed just as assiduously by newly weds furnishing their first apartment, as by young couples decorating their newborn’s room or parents altering the cartoonthemed rooms of their grown-up children.

with pretty patterns printed on them, people realized that being organized, in an efficient and aesthetic manner, meant they needed to replace their ordinary storage cartons with IKEA patterned cardboard boxes — just as they did earlier with IKEA’s Billy bookcases and Ivar storage systems and …

In the middle of these busy celebrations, Adel Y. Al-Shamali, General Manager, IKEA-Kuwait, graciously found time to talk with VivaLife about his company, its plans for the future, his outlook on Kuwait’s business climate and more importantly, why IKEA is such a quintessential global cult brand. We met up at Mr Shamali’s office, at IKEA head office in the Avenues mall. As expected the room was an epitome of IKEA elegance — an airy open plan office with clean lines and neutral palette with large well-upholstered white sofas against dark paneling. A room you would expect to see on the pages of, well, an IKEA catalog. We started off by asking what everyone asks of businesses these days, “How’s business?” “In line with retail businesses around the world we too are witnessing a downturn in consumer spending,” said Mr Shamali. “I won’t deny that this has had an impact on our budget. But this is only to be expected in any recession and we remain upbeat that in coming months, business will pick up again.” After recently being acklnowledged as a Superbrand, what exciting plans are in the pipeline for IKEA — perhaps a branch in Fahaheel or other suburbs? “‘Superbrands is an important industry recognition as it acknowledges the success of IKEA Kuwait’s unique business philosophy and the value it has been offering to the local home furnishings retail market the past many years. Due to Kuwait’s geographical location, its size, population density and purchasing patterns, we are not aiming to open more stores in the country. Our 21,000square meter store in the Avenues mall can comfortably cater to over 5 million customers annually. However, we are looking to opening stores in other Middle East countries like Jordan, Lebanon and Syria, where we see a good potential for growth. We have an IKEA coming up in Amman, Jordan that is slated for opening in late 2010 or early 2011, which will be wholly owned and operated by IKEAKuwait.” How do you cater to the varied tastes of the large multi-ethnic, culturally distinct consumers in Kuwait? “It was quite a problem in early days of IKEA - Kuwait. Earlier the general preference in the country was for elaborate Ottoman style furnishings, something on the lines of traditional English country or Provencal furnishings. Getting people to make the transition to IKEA’s minimalist Scandinavian style furniture and furnishing was not an easy process. When we first entered the market there was a general feeling among local populace that IKEA furniture was alright for secondary homes like chalets or farmhouses. In Kuwait, primary homes tend to be large spaces; sometimes to fill a living room would require at least two sets

of IKEA furniture. So we spoke with IKEA people and convinced them to adapt and customize the size, style and color of furniture and furnishing to match local preferences and larger spaces. Over the years, simplicity, a tenet of Swedish design, along with emphasis on blonde woods, untreated surfaces and clean lines, all characteristic of IKEA furniture, has caught the imagination of people in Kuwait, especially the young generation, who prefer simple designs over ornate décor and styles; the emphasis now is more on quality and fine workmanship.”

enter IKEA’s clearly recognizable blue and yellow boxy buildings, pick up familiar tiny pencils and paper measuring tapes and get to move down similar wide aisles that allow you to conveniently examine merchandize without impeding other customers. As the Harvard Business study noted, IKEA have put in place a form of gentle coercion aimed at encouraging customers to stay longer and spend more.

South Asia are not real challenges for us. IKEA is not just about furniture or home furnishing, it is an experience that is quite unique. You may be able to copy the furniture design, but you cannot replicate the experience. Having said that, we do face challenges, often from staid government policies or stifling bureaucracy; the ability to confront those challenges and convert them into opportunities for growth and development is what successful business is all about.” Are current business legislations and political hurdles in the country conducive to transforming Kuwait into a business and financial hub? “Definitely not, policies should be legislated with the aim of promoting business in a country, not hindering it. Would you believe, we have been waiting nearly three years to get bu-

If the government is serious about realizing its aim of turning Kuwait into a business and financial hub, it needs to do a lot more than just have a vision. Along with a clear vision and a well thought out transparent plan of action, we need the ability to implement the plans. Lack of forward thinking business policies and absence of a determination to implement successful strategies is what keeps our country lagging behind others in the region.” “How does IKEA view its obligation to the environment and society?” “Very seriously; we implement waste recycling as an integral part of our business strategy and we encourage everyone, our employees, suppliers and customers, to support and partici-

pate in recycling of waste. For instance, we ensure our delivery people bring back cartons and packing material after they go for an installation. We then dispose of it in separate waste recycling bins that we have for paper, wood and plastic. Also, as a policy, IKEA uses paper bags as they are more environmentally friendly than plastic. We would even like to make do without paper bags, but we have to draw a line between customer convenience and our environment friendly policies. Creating awareness among the public is important because it is key to getting them more involved in environmentally friendly practices.” “Also, as part of implementing our Corporate Citizenship Program, we plan to refurbish reception areas in selected hospitals to make them more attractive and comforting. The Scientific Center - Kuwait

I

f you have what it takes to go eye-ball to eye-ball against a pod of sharks some as large as 2 meters, confront the powerful snapping jaws of a ferocious crocodile, even meet with a python on its own turf, then all you got to do is drive on over to the Scientific Center in Salmiya. And remember, take along plenty of imagination — the fact that you would be separated from those dangerous species by thick plate-glass walls should in no way dampen your enthusiasm for adventure. Located in Ras al Ardh, Salmiya, the Scientific Center is the large building with huge sails strungup that you notice on your left, as you drive down Arabian Gulf Road from Kuwait City. The other day, we drove over there to learn more about the Center and what it offers for those not lucky enough to take a break from the country’s sweltering heat and its less than occasional dust storms. In 1993, when the late amir Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah mandated KFAS (Kuwait Foundation for the

Advancement of Sciences) to come up with plans for such a Center, KFAS turned to Dr. Mijbil Al Mutawa. Currently chairman and director, Dr. Mijbil was instrumental in all the planning and development stages before the eventual opening of the Center in 1997. Explaining the layout of the 80,000 square meter Center, Dr. Mijbil pointed out the four units that together constitute Kuwait Scientific Center. The Aquarium, the largest in the Middle East, is without doubt the Center’s main draw. This is followed closely by the completely revamped 254seat IMAX theatre, the first and only one of its kind in the Middle East and the Discovery Place, an interactive hands-on experience that demonstrates major scientific facts in a fun way. Rounding up attractions at the Center is the Dhow Harbor. Set along a wide promenade, with two 70 meters long piers that jut into the sea, the dhow Harbor hosts traditional wooden sailing dhows that reflect Kuwait’s glorious culture and seafaring history. The four areas are spread out around the central administration and reception area, with its large Gift shop, where you can buy mementos of your visit to the Center.

Dr. Mijbil Al-Mutawa Though called the Aquarium, it is not your run-of-the-mill, dark and damp place with tanks of fishes lining the walls. Visitors to the Aquarium are taken through three habitats that echo the natural environment of the Arabian Peninsula - desert, coastline and the sea. Scampering foxes, fluttering birds and slithering snakes in a bright airy area leads to the aquarium proper. Inside the Aquarium, large sharks, majestic sting-rays shoals of rainbow colored fishes swim around in their natural habitat behind floor to ceiling plate-glass walls. Over 85 percent of the 50 or more marine species at the Aquarium come from local waters the rest are from overseas. On specific days, you can catch an exciting live demonstration of divers feeding the denizens of the deep. The Aquarium’s latest attraction is a huddle of

Among the boats on display at the Harbor is Fateh el-Khair, the only surviving sail-ship from Kuwait’s pre-oil era, when boats from Kuwait traded down the Gulf coast and along ports on the Arabian sea. Giving us a brief history on the Fateh el Khair, Dr. Mijbil said, “Following the liberation of Kuwait in 1991, the late amir, Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmed Al Jaber, ordered KFAS to search for a Kuwaiti dhow that would symbolize Kuwait’s past. Eventually, after months of search, the Fateh el Khair was traced to Dubai. The boat was acquired from its then owners and towed back to Kuwait. The Fateh el Khair, which was originally built by Kuwaiti shipwrights in 1938, was restored to its former glory by a a team of boat-builders supervised by the same shipwright who had worked on the original. Swine Flu - influenza A(H1N1) virus

M

edia have been giving daily updates on it, health authorities are warning of its dire consequences and people everywhere are talking about it — we are of course, referring to Swine Flu or, to be more scientifically appropriate, novel influenza A(H1N1) flu pandemic that is making headlines around the world. Despite its publicity, the lack of clear understanding among the public led us to talk to doctors, specialists and other health authorities to bring you the latest relevant information needed to meet any emergencies. So, without much ado, let’s jump right in. What is H1N1 flu virus? First, the name, though officially called novel influenza A(H1N1) flu virus, it has at times been variously called, H1N1 virus, swine influenza A (H1N1), influenza A – H1N1, Mexican Swine Flu, Human Swine Flu and simply swine flu. To elaborate on the influenza virus: Influenza A is a species of virus with many subtypes that have mutated into

Symptoms of swine flu include fever, cough, body aches, dry and sore throat, fever, chills, diarrhea, vomiting and general fatigue. Symptoms are generally seen 3 to 5 days after you are exposed to the virus and continue for a week or more. The virus can be passed to another person 1 day before you get sick and continue to be virulent until you recover.

What are recommended treatments and preventive measures? The best approach is to try and avoid infection by staying away from infected people and areas known to be contaminated. flu symptoms. Branded antiviral drugs like Tamiflu, which can be taken in pill or liquid form, and Relenza, which must be inhaled, are prescribed to reduce severity of symptoms and duration of the flu. However, it is important to start treatment immediately as antiviral drugs are most effective if treatment begins within 48 hours of developing symptoms.

methods, along with rapid isolation and treatment, only makes sense at the very earliest stage of an outbreak and becomes relatively irrelevant once the virus is spreading widely within the community. Also the lack of fever in a significant number of infected cases calls in question the use of thermal scans at airports and other border crossings.

How scared should one be? To put a number on it, well, on a scale of 1 to 10 we figure swine flu currently deserves a scare figure of 5. It is important to keep in mind that the World Health Organization (WHO), which raised a level-6 influenza pandemic alert, their highest level, did so not on account of the severity of swine flu, but because of the rapid and globally widespread rate of infection.

The Center for Disease Prevention (CDC) in the United States has recommended the following groups to be prioritized for receiving the H1N1 flu vaccine when it becomes available: Pregnant women Care givers to infants below 6 months of age (because infants in this age group cannot be vaccinated) Healthcare and emergency medical personnel All people in the age groups from 6 months to 18 years Young adults in the age group from 18 to 24 years Then people aged 25 to 64, who have health conditions associated with higher risk of medical complications from influenza. Once vaccines are available in plenty, the rest of the population could be vaccinated for the virus. Current studies indicate that unlike other influenza viruses, the risk for infection among people over the age 64 is less than the risk for younger age groups. In closing it is perhaps pertinent to note that every year the annual seasonal influenza epidemics are estimated to affect 5-15 percent of the global population. Although most cases are mild, this still causes severe illness in 3-5 million people, and around 250,000-500,000 deaths occur worldwide. The swine flu has so far come nowhere near this number, and this fact is not something to be sneezed at.

WHO has now said that because the chain of personto-person transmission is no longer evident in some countries, it is prudent to stop the expensive and time-consuming process of testing all suspected cases. Besides, surveillance VIVALIFE

Sun Exposure and its Effects

I

n recent decades doctors have become increasingly aware of the health risks associated with overexposure to the sun’s ultraviolet radiation (UV). Some long-term harmful effects linked to UV overexposure include skin cancers, permanent damage to the eyes and premature aging signs like wrinkles and age spots.

So, what has UV wavelength got to do with sunburn? The shorter the UV wavelength the higher its frequency and the greater its potential to harm the human body. The major natural source of ultraviolet radiation on Earth is from the Sun. Luckily for us, the Earth’s atmosphere filters the entire harmful shorter wavelengths of UVC, and much of the medium wavelengths of UVB With the view that education is radiation from the sun. indirectly affects the skin cells by generating reactive chemicals that damage the cell’s DNA structure. However, on a positive note, UVB also induces production of vitamin D in the body, a deficiency of which could lead to poor absorption of calcium and associated bone diseases. Current scientific thinking with regard to the effects of UV radiation on the skin is that direct damage to DNA causes sunburn as well as the two most common forms of skin cancer — basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Indirect DNA damage by UVA and penetration into the skin of sunscreens causes the more lethal form of skin cancer — malignant melanoma. Though this form of skin cancer is rare it is responsible for 75 percent of all skin cancer related deaths. The use of some antibiotics, contraceptives and tranquilizers are also known to increase the skin’s sensitivity to UV radiation. Individuals who have developed skin cancer or who have an increased risk of developing skin cancer need sun protection to minimize UV exposure.

Sunscreen prevents direct DNA damage by blocking UVB radiation, whihc is the main cause of sunburn. Most sunscreens are now rated according to their Sun Protection Factor (SPF) number. For instance, sun protective clothing should offer a UPF (Ultrviolet Protective Factor) of 30+ to provide adequate protection. UPF is a rating system for sun protective clothing similar to SPF. UPF rates the UV protection of fabrics. A garmet with a 50+ number allows only 1/50th of the UV radiation falling on the garment to pass through, in other words it blocks 49/50th or 98 percent of radiation. Similarly hats with wider brim provide better protection, as do sunglasses which protect the eyes from the front and the sides. It is expected that the health problems associated with overexposure to the sun will continue to escalate over the coming years. A coordinated, well funded, long-term effort, supported at multiple levels of government, is needed to raise awareness of the problem. Programs on the harmful effects of UV radiation along with a broad range of resources and support for its success are needed to bring the message to schools, workplace and the community at large.

dvocacy groups and other detractors of commercializing Olympic Games who lament about ‘undermining the professed ideals of the Games’ would probably be mortified to learn that ancient Olympics was not as ‘pure’ a sport, or devoid of any ‘lure of lucre’. As far back as Fifth century BC, the philosopher Xenophanes spoke out against prize money which alters the true goal of sports, namely, the training of youth. Despite such public admonitions, the Olympic arena in Ancient Greece was often surrounded by concession stands selling foods, drinks and souvenirs, and with poets, artists and sculptors hawking their ware. Market commissioners and mastigophorai (whip bearers) went around deciding what was, and was not, permitted at the venue, and imposing on-thespot fines or lashes for shoddy products or price gouging. If we take the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as modern-day market commissioners (bereft of their mastigophorai) then it is to their credit that they have prohibited the display of commercial advertisements from Olympic venues and on uniforms of participating athletes. But everywhere else seems fair game for corporate sponsors and partners to purvey their products and services. Today, the debate is no longer on whether or not commercial interests should be allowed to invade the Games, but rather the extent to which it has and the egregious nature of it. The ramifications of rampant com-

mercialism is felt on everyone associated with the Games — the officials, athletes, spectators as well as citizens of the hosting country. The pervasive commercial messaging and branding have eroded, and in some cases subverted, the very principles of Olympic Games, which aims to foster a blend of sport, culture and education. Advocacy groups point to the last Olympic Games held in Beijing. A record 63 companies were accorded sponsorship or were partners to the Games and spent between $4-6 billion for that honor. The 12 TOP (The Olympic Partners) tier companies alone are reported to have paid around $866 million to the International Olympic Committee. Not withstanding the principles of Olympism, which celebrate healthful living, two of the primary Olympic sponsors, McDonald’s and Coco-Cola enjoyed artificial monopolies in their respective sponsorship categories, selling their unhealthy products at the Beijing Games. In addition, corporate sponsors are showering money on each organizational tier of the Olympic Games, from various Olympic committees to International Federations governing each sport to National sporting bodies in each country. More than 100 corporations contributed undetermined amounts of cash to the U.S. Olympic committee and U.S. National teams, during the period leading up to the Beijing Olympics, questioning the nonprofessional nature of Olympics Finding an acceptable balance between vested commercial in-

#1 Top insurer heads Chicago’s 2016 Olympic bid Patrick Ryan, the 70-year-old chief of Chicago’s bid to host the 2016 Olympics said that trying to win the right to host the Olympics was very different from running a business. In business you can control the results, he recently told AFP (Agence France-Presse), but in the bid to host the Olympics it was exactly the opposite. “With regard to the bid you can control the activities but not the result. Unlike business, there are a lot of variables over which you have very little control. Ryan, part-owner of the Chicago Bears NFL team, said that two major problems which have been concerning the 100-odd IOC members ahead of the vote in Copenhagen on October 2 were being addressed.First, the worries about whether Chicago could really finance the Games and then the fact that they had taken out insurance against suffering losses. But Ryan, who created AON, the world’s leading provider of risk management services, insurance and reinsurance brokerage, was adamant that the insurance was only a precautionary measure. “The city has a very strong credit rating,” said Ryan. “The city is more than capable of funding the hosting of the Games. Ramadan – the month of spirituality By Rita Alshoaibi of gratitude and generosity coloring festivities on the occasion. Fasting during Ramadan is an opportunity for Muslims to practice self-control, humility, charity, kinship with fellow believers as well as seek forgiveness and spiritual devotion. Below are some practices that you could perform to boost your spirituality during the month of Ramadan.

amadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar when Muslims around the world undertake a month-long religious observance. The Islamic calendar, which is based on the lunar calendar, moves forward by around 11 days each year against the Gregorian calendar. Thus Ramadan, which comes from the Arabic root ‘rmdh’, as in ‘ar-ramadh’ meaning scorched land, dry intense heat, is not confined to solar season, but moves through all of them in the course of about 33 years. Ramadan is the Islamic month of spiritual purification and fasting (sawm) — one of the five pillars of Islam. The Holy Quran proclaims, “fasting has been written down (as obligatory) upon you, as it was upon those before you.” During this month Muslims are ordained to abstain, from dawn to sunset, from eating, drinkVIVALIFE

recent region-wide survey conducted by Maktoob Research on the attitudes and perceptions of the faithful vis-à-vis Ramadan traditions and practices revealed that an overwhelming 98 percent of Muslim Arabs are observing the Ramadan fast this year. The survey, conducted during the month of August, just prior to the beginning of the Holy Month, canvassed the opinions of 4,335 adult Muslims from across the Arab world. “The survey’s findings have clearly displayed that the Arab world retains a strong bond with the rich traditions and practices associated with the Holy Month. Respondents also look forward to this special time of the year to forge stronger ties with loved ones and share in the spirit of Ramadan with fellow Muslims,” said Tamara Deprez, General Manager of Maktoob Research. The survey also revealed that: 89 percent of this year’s respondents, as against 44 percent last year, prefer to celebrate Iftar with their families at home. Others preferred to break fast alongside friends or by attending a religious ceremony.

How to Make Money Make Money By Yacoub Omar

I

n this issue, and in upcoming issues, our resident stock analyst Yacoub Omar wil explain in simplistic language the field of investing and how you can make your money make more money. However, this series of articles is not about making a million in a month; it is about investing your money in stocks and bonds so that in the long term it will earn you a good return. The returns, whether they come in as a regular income from dividends, or as profit resulting from growth in value, or a combination of both, will ensure financial security for you and your family. Just a couple of months ago it was culling time at stock markets around the world; from Toronto to Tokyo stocked stumbled and shares evaporated as uncertainty wielded its scythe on the economy. Today, bruised and bleeding but still standing, stock exchanges have pulled themselves up and are once again rearing to go. This remarkable turnaround should essentially tell you two things — one that a resilient stock exchange is a crucial element of modern global econmies; and two, price vacillations in stocks and shares are not wobbles of a weakened economy, rather they are its innate characteristics. To prove the point, just take a look at the Dow-Jones industrial average – the most widely accepted measure of the stock market in the United States. On October 27, 1966, the Dow-Jones industrial average closed at 809.57 points. Over

four decades later, in 2009, the Dow opened on August 15, at 9398.04, a value addition of over 1060 percent. And during a 52-week period, before midAugust, 2009, the Dow Jones Industrial Average had gone from a high of 11,790.17 points to a low of 6,469.95!

Another reason why people are afraid to invest in stocks is because they think that investing is a complicated business. If it were really complicated, millions of people around the world would not own stocks today. An alternative to all the above investing scenarios is to invest your money in stocks and bonds. Today, the largest buyers of stocks and bonds are not individuals, but your banks and insurance companies — this should set lights flashing in your mind. Banks and other financial institutions take the money you deposited with them and invest them in securities so that they then have the money to pay you interest on your deposit and pocket a nice profit for themselves. But why do such respected, trustworthy organizations, like banks, trusts and insurance companies, consistently place their funds in stocks and bonds? Because, over the years, records prove that the average stock has paid a better return and provided a better balance of protection against the evident and unseen risks than any other form of investment. As businesses in a country continue to prosper, the stock holders will also prosper. However, you need to keep in mind that not all business will prosper; over time some of them might decline or even go bankrupt. But generally, most businesses have prospered over the years and this has earned the average stock holder on an average anything from 3 to 7 percent annually on his money. And, even more importantly, stockholders have seen their stocks go up in value as prices generally have risen, thus protecting them against the ‘obscure’ risk of inflation. In the next issue, we will look at some of common investing jargon, including terms like venture capital, common stocks, dividends, earnings, assets and liabilities and book value. We will explain those terms using stocks we will float for a hypothetical company called VivaLife.

For millennia, they have served as a powerful symbol for life itself. In the culinary world, eggs are a staple for breakfast, an essential binding agent in sauces, and they give rise and shine to countless baked goods. Eggs add body, flavor, and depth to every dish they grace. Without them, our culinary landscape would be flat, bleak, and matte.

Your Cosmic Calendar ARIES

GEMINI

LEO

You have the gambling spirit and you may call upon that spirit in making a decision this month. You have been dealing with restrictive Saturn in your work life for the past two years and it may not have been easy. As Jupiter, often called the cosmic Santa Claus, formed what is thought of as an aspect of fate to the planet Saturn. If that isn’t enough incentive to think about making a change, then the New Moon in Leo falls into the house of chance or risk taking. It could be a friend or an organization you belong to aids and abets your desire for change.

Is it your own innate restlessness that is provoking you to make a change possibly concerning your own four walls? You can’t actually change your residence whenever you feel that familiar restlessness, but you can take off to a faraway spot and lessen the impatience. With recent Lunar Eclipse falling into the house of those faraway places and trailed by a trio of positive planets, it’s hard to stay put. An inner tug of war between what is and what could be occurs as the gentle forces of the universe guide you, though you may not make a firm decision or changes until February.

It’s all about you and your partner this month, whether it is a romantic partner or a business partner. Is there a financial issue that has been causing friction? If funds have been limited for the past year or two, that situation is about to turn around. The Lunar Eclipse in August hitched to the cosmic Santa Claus Jupiter, along with Neptune and Chiron is a decisive time in this particular partnership. With Jupiter making a fated aspect to Saturn, you could end up on the upside of a financial or romantic situation. Besides the Sun, in Leo is set to shine on your corner of the world.

TAURUS

CANCER

VIRGO

With a trio of healing planets also hitched onto that star, there could be career action that although you are dubious about at the time, works out in your favor. You’ve had Saturn in the house of taking a risk for the past two years but in August it formed an aspect of fate with the bountiful Jupiter. It could be that there is a sudden opportunity or turn in your career path and in how the public views you. You would rather avoid the road less taken, but give it a chance, Taurus. The New Moon in the house of communication will help project positive and optimistic energy.

VIVALIFE

Verbal communication is not your forte and with Saturn in the house of small talk it has been difficult for some time now to express your true feelings. With the last Lunar Eclipse accompanied by the healing trio of Jupiter, Neptune, and Chiron in the house of other people’s money, it could be there is a financial or emotional bonus coming your way, and either way, you are delighted by the outcome. In September, you’ll be offered a choice between love or money and you’ll make an attempt to grab both, but it could be that you end up only getting half of the prospective bounty.

36

Being a creature of habit, Virgo, it could be that you are in for a much welcomed shake-up. The last Lunar Eclipse instills a need to at least rattle routine, if not in fact pick the lock and make an escape. In September, Jupiter, forms an aspect of fate with Saturn the planet of every restriction. Your aim this month is to be unfettered and free from any unnecessary constraints. If there isn’t enough temptation to change your day-to-day life, the New Moon in Leo allows you to make the change in such a subtle way that you may even wake up pleasantly surprised at its outcome.

The Lunar Eclipse in your own offbeat sign of Aquarius could signal a change in the way you present yourself. This is a situation that has been brewing since the last Eclipse in Aquarius approximately one year ago and could concern a partner of a romantic or business nature. In September, when Jupiter forms an aspect of fate with Saturn in the house of other people’s money and desire there could be finality to a long-debated issue. In our organized solar system, once a year the Sun lands in the house of recognition from the outer world and it looks as though this month you are being talked about in higher circles. The Tenth House is an umbrella covering various goodies in your career: promotions, new jobs, and even an unexpected fistful of dollars in your paycheck. The Lunar Eclipse that occurred recently signals a new direction in your residence, and this could be a move or upgrade. It could also indicate assistance coming your way from an organization that you belong to.

CAPRICORN

The effects of last Lunar Eclipse in Aquarius brings with it finances or that which you own or wish to own. With the Eclipse signaling a change of direction and in the company of optimistic and positive energy of Jupiter, Neptune, and Chiron, this could mean an improvement in financial matters. In September, the pragmatic Capricorn could feel as though fate has a hand in an offbeat financial deal. The New Moon plants new seeds in the house of investments, continuing the emphasis on financial or ownership concerns that had been on your mind for awhile now.

37

The Lunar Eclipse of last month is about behind-thescenes action and meets up with a healing trio of planets of which Jupiter is part of the team and acts as an angel on your shoulder. In September, that same Jupiter forms an aspect of fate with the restrictive Saturn, a long-time resident of the house of the partner. It could be the angel whispering in your ear is also guiding the two of you to a longawaited happy ending. With the New Moon in Leo a spotlight is turned on your romantic life. You have been waiting for this month for a long time Pisces, so enjoy its bounty.
