making the list

I

Editorial Executive Editor cheRYL RoSe

N MY OWN HOUSEHOLD LAST December, we were feeling a bit stretched, trying to afford all the accoutrements of the holiday season. Looking down my to-do/to-buy list, I struck off Christmas cards as they are a.) painfully time consuming and b.) expensive, as the price of stamps keeps going up. Ahhhh…one less expense and one less holiday stressor! Except that I’ve regretted it all year. We have a long Christmas card list and it’s definitely a project to manage each year, but it is also like a roadmap of our lives. On the list we have relatives from both spouses’ families, childhood playmates, high school friends, college roommates, colleagues from previous jobs, neighbors from every home we’ve lived in, lifelong pals and new acquaintances. Many of the people we may only communicate with once a year – when we send that holiday card. But for those few minutes that it takes to jot a note and sign the card, I’m remembering that person or family, remembering why they are special enough in our lives to make the list. In this era of Facebook and MySpace, we can reach out like never before to long lost connections, but don’t we all still get a little thrill to open the mailbox and find something other than a bill? The holidays are a new chance each year to re-connect with the people in your life that have touched you, befriended you, supported you or shared a laugh or a crisis with you. It’s also an annual chance to reach out to those we’ve struck from our lists and repair relationships. Thanks for picking up VIP of Southeast Texas each month and making us part of your list. Best wishes for a joyous holiday season.

A Designer Home

text by HALEY STRAHAN

OU WILL FIND HIS IMPECCABLE style in many of Beaumont’s most wellappointed homes. His shop is a mecca for interior decór junkies in search of the right sofa or the perfect chandelier. But when you ask Jeff McManus, interior designer and owner of McManus Company, to describe the design aesthetic of his own home, he’s at a loss for words. “It’s eclectic,” he begins, carefully choosing the words to explain a lifetime’s worth of passionate collecting, hunting for treasure at estate sales and antique shops, and the careful integration of all these beloved pieces into a showpiece home with a style all his own. “I like so many styles that it’s important for me to find a blend of the best,” McManus explained. “Asian, French, Italian — if it suits my fancy, I will work it in.” All of these influences are reflected in the pieces throughout McManus’ home. From 1960s Italian gilt trinkets, to groupings of jade sculptures, to a collection of vintage barware, McManus finds a way to work seemingly disparate elements into a seamless whole. The overall feeling of the home, however, is not one of over-accessorized fussiness. In fact, McManus stayed true to the modern architecture of the house by highlighting its open spaces and clean lines. “Any house tells me where to go as far as decoration,” McManus said. “”What I try to do is accent what the house is telling me.” Thus, when McManus moved into his current home two years ago, he chose to work with the house’s style. “You have to be sensitive to the architecture and style of the property,” McManus explained. “I don’t believe that you should buy a modern house if you want a totally traditional home.” But McManus didn’t throw out years’ worth of furniture and accessories to start over. “I didn’t get rid of any furniture,” he said. “I just tweaked the 10 December 2009

accessories and art.” Jeff McManus grew up in Beaumont, watching his parents run the McManus Lamp Lighter and honing his love of interior decoration. “I have been decorating since I was seven years old,” he said. “My parents used to come home and wonder why all the furniture was rearranged.” When he went to work for the family business, he expanded it to include antiques and interior design consultation. Today, McManus is the design genius behind many of Beaumont’s most stylish homes. “I work with clients who want my advice from the ground up, and those that just need me to find a few accessories.” For his own home, McManus was attracted to spare, modern architecture that is unusual for Beaumont. “The original owners spent a lot of time in Palm Springs, where homes are almost exclusively modern,” he said. “When I moved in, I did a few renovations, but no big physical changes because it was an architect’s home.” Some of the original features that charmed him were the hand-laid herringbone parquet floor throughout the house, the large glass windows covering the back of the home, and the nine foot tall, solid wood doors leading from room to room. “There are no door frames on the top so the rooms feel like they flow from each other. It really gives a sense of height.” McManus relied on muted colors in blues and greens to further the impression of airy cool. “I like a lot of color. Color is what creates atmosphere,” he said. To add richness, furniture pieces, accessories and art provide shots of red throughout. “I am always going to have red,” McManus explained. “Red adds drama anywhere.” However, the most remarkable aspects of decor in the McManus home are the one-of-a-kind accessories artfully arranged on tables, on walls, and in niches. “A lot of what you see in my home is a collection of 30 years,” he explained. “Everything I have has a story. It’s not just stuff.” For instance, a life-sized blackamoor sculpture stands near the dining table. “I have had it for twenty years,” he said. “People have offered me anything for it, but it’s >>

part of my permanent collection. It’s part of me.” Other notable pieces include the Italian reverse paintings on glass that were inherited from his mother, Italian gilt sword candelabras, and a pair of hand carved Marlborough lamps of amber quartz. “It’s an opportunity of a lifetime to own those lamps and I’m not letting them go,” McManus promised. In addition, he collects pieces from the personal collections of wellknown Beaumont interior designers of the past, like Irene Ferry, Betty Cuthrell and King Ward. Rather than grouping the pieces by collection, McManus integrates the items into vignettes throughout the home. “My collections are accessorized within the house,” he said. Modern is mixed with classical, like an antique chest resting on a Lucite coffee table. To highlight his art and accessories, McManus installed lighting to show the pieces in the best light. “I added 60 low-voltage lights on dimmers,” he explained. “Lighting has so much to do with atmosphere.” The penchant for integrating the items he loves into a totally unique design aesthetic, rather than decorating with some rigid design ideal in mind, is the biggest piece of advice McManus passes on to his clients. “I’m in favor of people working around the things they already have and love. Whether it’s your grandmother’s Oriental rug, or a family heirloom, choose those certain pieces and build the room around them.” In the end, the design aesthetic of Jeff McManus’s home is easily described. It isn’t modern, or rustic, or traditional; it is uniquely his own.

Grace, Grat it ude & Generosit y

Some people need to write. They are driven with an urge

as strong as hunger or thirst to put words to paper. Jane McBride is such a writer. She is a master of the rhythm and flow of words, hearing the syncopation of her sentences in her mind as she writes. Hers is a writer’s soul. This work reveals bits of that soul as she explores, very publicly, her personal journey from a childhood of challenging circumstances to an adulthood of joy and wonder, filled with the grace, gratitude and generosity she seeks – and offers to others. — Sheila Friedeck, Associate Managing Editor, Beaumont Enterprise

Prevention

The number one cure for a hangover is prevention. If you know you’re going to splurge on the fun factor, try these tips to help ease your mind and body in the morning: • EAT — Fill your stomach with healthy starches, and mineralrich food. • Hydrate — Intake water all day, and drink one glass of water for every alcoholic beverage. • Moderate — Limit your intake to less than one alcoholic drink per hour. • Alternate — If you’re worried about your “reputation,” alternate your “poison” with a non-alcoholic version.

Toxins be gone!

Detoxifying your body isn’t limited to purging it of alcohol, but also environmental and dietary toxins. We ingest chemicals daily that can be deposited into fat cells, with a build-up possibly leading to illness. Rid your body of toxins with some of these remedies: Diet Detox diets are typically short-term, with emphasis on vitamins, nutrients and antioxi-

dant-rich foods, and an increase in fiber and water intake. Tea Detox teas promote liver and intestinal function. Look for dandelion, milk thistle and ginger root. Naturally Detoxifying your body naturally involves a balanced, nutritional diet, intake of herbs and water, and daily exercise. Spa Spa treatments may include detoxifying body wraps, facials, Infrared Sauna and Ionic Food Detox services.

Wrap up the toxins

You can get a Murad Detoxifying Seaweed Wrap at the CHRISTUS St. Elizabeth Healthy Living Spa — Murad Inclusive Health Center in Beaumont, according to Monica LeBlanc, the assistant manager and an aesthetician. “The seaweed and French green clay mud both stimulate and detoxify the body,” LeBlanc said. “The mud forms a mask on the body, which allows nutrients and antioxidants to be absorbed into the skin, while detoxifying, hydrating and purging toxins as it dries. We also incorporate professional eye treatment masks into all of our facial services, and offer unbelievably effective retail products that help with puffiness and dark circles.”

Puffy eye cures

• Water, water, water. • Place green or black tea bags (after steeping) on eyelids and cover with a cloth. • Splash eyes with cold water. • Chill spoons in refrigerator to place on eyes. • Tried and true: cucumber slices. • Whip 1-2 egg whites until stiff, and brush under eyes. • Grate raw potatoes, wrap pulp in a cloth, and place on eyelids.

Here’s what TIME magazine says about outsourcing home cooking:

“The other nice thing was the price. I learned that you can clip as many coupons as you want, but you can never make a dinner as cheaply as these kitchens can.”

Lyle Lovett

We love the awesome acoustics at the Lutcher Theater in Orange. The theater celebrates its 30th season this year. Opening the season in style on October 26 was Kleinnative Lyle Lovett and his Large Band. Lovett took frequent opportunities to talk to the audience between sets, and though he said it was his first time in Orange, he had many childhood memories and current ties to the Beaumont area. Alternating from irreverent to serious, Lovett entertained a full house on the special anniversary evening.

Secret Santa EPIDEMIC:

Destined to catch that contagious Christmas Spirit text by HOLLI PETERSEN

Blue Broussard Funeral Director

Though only 26 years old, Blue Broussard is seasoned in the art of compassion. As a fifth generation funeral director at Broussard’s Mortuary, founded in 1889, Broussard’s legacy of benevolence makes him uniquely qualified to relate to citizens enduring grief. With such an emotionally taxing career, it would be understandable for Broussard to kick-back and relax during his leisure time. However, Broussard chooses to volunteer his time at Some Other Place, a nonprofit founded to fill in the gaps for poor individuals and families in Beaumont. As a board member, Broussard consults and assists in organizing Some Other Place’s programs. Through the family business, Broussard also provides for the organization’s printing needs. “I’ve learned from my grandfather and father how important it is to do a good thing for people who are at the most tragic point in their lives,” Broussard explained. “Serving at Some Other Place ties in with my job duties. It’s about offering a service to folks in need. I was always taught that it’s not a bad thing to help when there’s an opportunity.” 46 December 2009

You likely interact with these compassionate givers each day, without ever knowing their true identity. These Santas-in-disguise could be the Den Leader at Boy Scouts, the police officer that gives you a speeding ticket (so don’t be so quick to curse them!), the bank teller that reminds you to have a good day, or the funeral director that offers you a box of tissues.

Broussard hopes local residents will answer affirmatively to that opportunity to serve this Christmas season. Some Other Place’s clientele find it difficult to make ends meet all year long. The Christmas season can feel like a bleak and dreary time of year for them, since all families, no matter their financial position, want to make the season bright for their children. Due to the efforts of the Some Other Place Giving Tree, these families are given that privilege. “The Giving Tree makes sure that kids have something for Christmas,” Broussard explained. “We’re doing our best to collect clothing and gifts for them.” Though Some Other Place works tirelessly throughout the year, volunteers make a special push at this time of year to provide Christmas cheer to individuals in need. Relying solely on the generosity of our community, they depend on the prevailing Christmas spirit to support the children in Beaumont who would otherwise go without a Christmas.

anta Claus is real and living among us. No, not the commercialized Santa Claus that sits in malls and takes photos with children. This is a different sort of Santa — the sort that gives unselfishly, seeks to alleviate the distress of others, and sacrifices his or her most precious commodity — the limited resource of time — to help others.

Mary Epps What could be a sadder image than children waking up on Christmas morning to discover an empty stocking and no gifts under the tree? This image touched Mary Epps’ heart when she learned of a need for EJ’s Empty Stocking Fund volunteers through her local church bulletin. “I have two grown children and a grandson, so the little ones occupy a place right in the middle of my heart,” Epps said. “Whatever I can do to make them happy, I want to do.” The EJ’s Empty Stocking Fund (EJ stands for Enterprise/Journal) has been providing holiday food and toys to Southeast Texas families in need since 1914. It is their goal to provide families with enough new and gently-used gifts to restore children’s faith in the magic of Christmas. The organization also provides food vouchers so each family can enjoy a delicious Christmas dinner. Donations are raised solely through advertisements in the Beaumont Enterprise. Though Epps has a full schedule caring for her medically dependent husband and working as a bank teller, she’s still made the time to serve – even if it required her to take vacation time to do so. Over time, her commitment to the EJ’s Empty Stocking Fund has grown from being a volunteer to serving on the board. This year, the EJ’s Empty Stocking Fund expects applications from an even larger amount of families. With a troubled economy and some people still trying to recover from Hurricane Ike, the need for assistance has increased. “Most of these families are just people who can’t do those extras for their family,” Epps explained. “They’re not just looking for a hand-out. They are truly so appreciative.” Epps hopes that anyone with a warm heart and a desire to serve this Christmas will consider the needs of those less fortunate. “It really is all about the giving,” she enthused. “The Lord has blessed me, and so I want to also bless the lives of those who’ve fallen on hard times.”

Stay-At-Home Mom

Christine Hill appears to be an average stay-at-home mom. With three children and a fourth on the way, she stays busy chauffeuring her kids to their assorted activities, involving herself at school events, and maintaining all the responsibilities of a home and family. However, when time allows, Hill enjoys volunteering for several organizations including the Boy Scouts, Junior League and Symphony League. Of all the organizations she shares her time with, Hill confesses to being the most committed to, and affected by, her work with the Jefferson County Medical Society Alliance. This auxiliary, formed by the wives of local doctors and medical professionals, supports several different causes that impact the lives of Southeast Texans. From the “Hard Hats for Little Heads” program to the Medical Education Fund Scholarships, the ladies of this auxiliary are committed to improving their community. Each Christmas season, the organization dedicates time and attention to a very special endeavor – the Christmas Angels program. Collecting donations from local doctors and hospitals, the organization purchases non-perishable goods and gift baskets. These goods are stuffed in special holiday baskets and distributed to elderly and home-bound families in Southeast Texas through Some Other Place’s Meals on Wheels program. Because the Meals on Wheels program does not operate between the weeks of Christmas and New Year, these disadvantaged individuals require other organizations to help supply them with the food that they rely on. The gift baskets assembled by the Jefferson County Medical Society Alliance provide the provisions to sustain recipients through the holiday. “These individuals are truly in need,” Hill explained. “We are pleased to help them during the Christmas season. It amazes me how much good a small group can do with a little drive and dedication. I feel so blessed to be a part of this organization.”

“All these children deserve a Christmas.”

Officer Steve Flores

With one of the most challenging and treacherous professions possible, police officers are often forced to set aside their emotions. Despite the challenges they face daily, the complex men and women of law enforcement still retain warm hearts and the desire to give back to the communities they serve. “In my job capacity, I have to hide my feelings,” said Port Arthur Police Officer Steve Flores. “But it is sad. I don’t like to see people suffering.” Flores works in PAPD’s Street Crimes Unit, working to keep drug users, drug dealers, gangs and prostitutes off the streets. Each day is fraught with danger and the most atrocious images of poverty, desperation, addiction and misery. However, during the Christmas season, Flores looks forward to showing his softer side. He enjoys compassionately seeking toys and money for Port Arthur’s impoverished families through the PAPD’s Blue Santa Program. Every year, the Blue Santa program distributes hundreds of toys to local children who would not have the opportunity to celebrate Christmas if not for these generous contributions. Through the efforts of a handful of these “Blue Santas” from the PAPD’s Community Policing and Street Crimes divisions, an amazing amount of goodwill is bestowed. Last year, the Blue Santas gave Christmas gifts to more than 700 children. “We have so many low-income families who simply can’t afford to buy Christmas presents,” Flores explained. “We’re just trying to help them out.” Port Arthur and its surrounding towns, an area deeply impacted by the effects of a depressed economy and still reeling from Hurricane Ike damage, has residents in desperate need for assistance. This year, expecting an even greater need, the officers began working earlier to raise funds for the program. “We will probably have more families this year, but we will do our best to help them,” Flores said. “All these children deserve a Christmas.”

A-Hunting They Will Go

I

photography by LEE E. STINSON

text by CATHLEEN COLE

Greg Fountain, Justin Sanderson and Bernie Daleo t’s 4 a.m. and freezing cold. The frost bites and the north wind blows as hunters emerge from their camps and head for their deer stands in the woods. For them, hunting is not just a hobby. It’s a passion. “If I could earn a living at it,” Justin Sanderson of Beaumont said, “that’s what I would do.” Growing up in Nederland, Sanderson started retrieving ducks at age 5 for his father. When he was 6, his dad handed down the Winchester shotgun that had been his first gun. Sanderson will pass the gun to his sons, James, 6, and John, 4. He takes his kids hunting with him, making sure there are plenty of activities to do and snacks to eat in the deer stand. They get up before 5 a.m. and he gives them their breakfast and coffee-milk, he said. His wife, 50 December 2009

Sonia, hunts too and shot her first buck last year. For most hunters, hunting is a family tradition. Like Sanderson, Bernie Daleo of Beaumont started hunting at age 5 with his dad. Greg Fountain of LaBelle grew up on High Island and duck hunted with his father and uncles on Bolivar Peninsula. He received his first gun for Christmas when he was 9 years old. “It was a lifestyle we all cherished and enjoyed,” he said. The men, like their fathers,

are passing the love of the sport to their children. “It’s a big family affair,” Daleo said. His daughter, Giuliana, 10, and his son, Tripp, 8, are hunters too. His wife, Stephanie, accompanies them on their adventures but abstains from hunting. “She’ll come,” Daleo said, “but she doesn’t like to shoot anything.” Fountain takes his children, Kyle, 15, and Amanda, 11, hunting with him, while his wife, Belinda, usually stays home to enjoy some alone time. It’s a life-lesson experience for children, Fountain believes. “Hunting and fishing teach patience and respect for wildlife and the outdoors,” he said. Sanderson, Daleo and Fountain all have the deer they kill processed into sausage, ground meat and roasts. “It’s not just killing to be killing,” Fountain said. “We eat venison all year long.” Fountain shares a deer lease near Lake Sam Rayburn on 3,500 acres with a three-bedroom trailer as a base camp. Sanderson shares an 1,800-acre lease in Bon Weir on the Sabine River and camps in a recreational vehicle. Daleo heads to a friend’s 12,000-acre private ranch in Uvalde with his family. When they go with friends and leave the family behind, things can get a little wild. “What happens at the deer lease stays at the deer lease,” Fountain said. And what’s the biggest trophy for each hunter? (The number of points on the deer’s rack increased after each man learned what the last one claimed. Coincidence? Most likely.) Fountain shot an 8-point buck, Sanderson killed a 12-point buck and Daleo downed a 14-point buck. Fountain refers to a popular bumper sticker that reads: “A bad day of hunting is better than a good day at the office.” For these men, hunting isn’t just a lifestyle. Hunting is their life.

“Hunting and fishing teach patience and respect for wildlife

and the outdoors.”

Billie Harland Santa Claus text by CHERYL ROSE

’Round about December each year, Vidor resident Billie Harland, 58, changes hats from an electrical systems engineer for Veolia Environmental Services to a very famous alter ego.

photography by KYLE PETERSEN

“My mother, Lucy Harland, volunteered at the Vidor Elementary School with the special-needs children,” Harland said. “She made a Santa suit for my father, Billie, so they could entertain the children as Mr. and Mrs. Claus. The next year, my father was tied up, so I wore the suit. I’ve been Santa for 18 years now.” Something magical happened when Harland put on the suit: he discovered that Southeast Texas really needed Santa. Over the years he’s visited schools, churches and personal homes to bring the joy of Santa to children. On one memorable occasion, Harland was driving from one school to another dressed as Santa when a police officer pulled him over. The officer had a special request: could Santa visit a sick child? Harland remembers that after visiting with the child, the patient wasn’t feeling puny any more, but rather bouncing off the walls with excitement. In the off-season, Harland enjoys a

passion for astronomy, volunteering at the George Observatory in Houston and at Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center. “I like to teach the constellations,” Harland said. “I started learning ancient folk tales about astronomy so I could gather the kids and entertain them during the watches at the Observatory.” Harland and his wife, Cynthia, have three adult children, Heather Rose, Billie and Frederick. Harland has traveled to all 50 states and even flown over the North Pole. A storyteller and a student of theology, Harland hopes that by sharing a joyful moment with Santa Claus, he’s helping children to believe in great and mysterious things, if only briefly. After all these years, he’s still wearing the same suit, unaltered. “I just can’t let go of the suit that Mama made — too many memories,” Harland said with fondness. “Children don’t see any wear-and-tear — all they see is Santa.”

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// You’ve been at this a long time. What motivates you? Feeling the joy that radiates from children when they see Santa. Paper list or database these days? Database. First, it saves the trees, and second, it can be updated in the wink of an eye.

How do you explain all those other guys dressed like you? Imitation is the greatest form of flattery. Besides, who would not want to be Santa! Three words that describe you: Meticulous, traditional, believer

“Ho, ho, ho! Merry Christmas everybody!” 52 December 2009

Favorite meal? The one I am eating. Do you have a training regimen? Yes. Milk, cookies and fruitcake. As long as it has the three basic ingredients of sugar, flour and grease, I can work out with it.

////////////////////////////////////////////////// Ever get caught in a chimney? No, however there was this close call with a Pennsylvania fireplace, but thanks to the help of a young man named Benjamin Franklin I was able to get around the baffles.

“Children don’t see any wear-and-tear – all they see is Santa.”

Favorite movie? “Miracle on 34th Street.” Pet peeve: Zero tolerance. Zero tolerance seems to be a policy used to justify correcting people who do very bad things by severely punishing those who make innocent mistakes. If Santa practiced zero tolerance, no one would get Christmas presents. Cocoa or Latte? Cocoa. Favorite kind of cookie? Burnt Toll House chocolate chip. (Santa learned to love them because they were made by little ones who love him.) If I weren’t a world-famous celebrity philanthropist, I’d be an … Elementary school teacher. My ideal vacation would be… Do you know someone who never seems to take a vacation? Someone who seems to love their job so much they just can’t stay away for two weeks? Well, Santa is one of those people. Some people think Santa only works one day a year. The truth is Santa works every day of the year. I may be lying in the sun at the beach or fishing Lake Fork. I may be on some ride at Disneyland or skiing in Colorado, but you see, I have this list I need to keep… Biggest thrill? Seeing families together on the holidays. What are you doing for New Year’s Eve? Sleeping. Best Christmas ever? Many times over the years I have heard a child say, “This is the bestest Christmas ever!” I hope I never stop hearing that, so the ‘best Christmas ever’ is the one yet to be.
