Vibration exposure is possible in many occupations where a worker comes in contact with vibrating machinery or equipment. When a worker operates handheld equipment such as a chain saw or jackhammer, vibration affects hands and arms and is called hand-arm vibration exposure. When a worker sits or stands on a vibrating floor or seat, the exposure affects almost the entire body and is called whole-body vibration exposure. The risk of injury depends on the intensity and frequency of the vibration, the duration (years) of exposure and the part of the

body which receives the vibration energy. Hand-arm vibration causes damage to blood vessels and nerves in the fingers. The resulting condition is known as white finger disease, Raynaud's phenomenon or hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). The affected fingers turn white, especially when exposed to cold. Vibration-induced white finger disease also causes a loss of grip force and reduced sensitivity to touch. The effect of whole-body vibration is poorly understood. Studies of drivers of heavy vehicles have revealed an increased incidence of the disorders of bowel and the circulatory, musculoskeletal and neurological systems. However, disorders of the nervous, circulatory and digestive systems are not specific to whole-body vibration exposure. These disorders are assumed to be caused by a combination of various working conditions and life style factors rather than by one physical factor alone. In light of a recently completed, comprehensive study, conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the Institute concludes that vibrating handtools can cause vibration syndrome, a condition also known as vibration white finger and as Raynaud's phenomenon of occupational origin. Vibration syndrome has adverse circulatory and neural effects in the fingers. The signs and symptoms include numbness, pain, and blanching (turning pale and ashen). Of particular concern is evidence of advanced stages of vibration syndrome after exposures as short as one year. NIOSH recommends that jobs be redesigned to minimize the use of vibrating handtools and that powered handtools be redesigned to minimize vibration. Vibration isolation is the process of isolating an object, such as a piece of equipment, from the source of vibrations. Despite construction distinctions the essence of all vibration isolation systems are identical. Passive vibration isolation systems consist essentially of a spring and damper (dash-pot). Active vibration isolation systems contain along with the spring, a feedback circuit which consists of a piezoelectric accelerometer, a controller, and an electromagnetic transducer. The acceleration (vibration) signal is processed by a control circuit and amplifier. Then it feeds the electromagnetic actuator, which amplifies the signal. As a result of such feedback system a considerably stronger suppression of vibrations is achieved compared to ordinary damping.
Workers whose hands and arms are regularly exposed to high vibration levels may experience injury to the hands and arm; these injuries include damage to the blood circulation system and to the nerves and muscles; one of the symptoms can be ١١
finger blanching and numbness which gives the condition its other name of Vibration White Finger or VWF. However, the correct term for the collection of injuries is "Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome". Typically exposed workers will be using powered tools, such as jack-hammers and chain-saws; however, harmful exposure to vibration could occur to employees guiding work-pieces through vibrating machinery, for example using pedestal grinders. Assessment of Damage Recently the issue of whole-body vibration has come to the fore. Whole-body vibration has widespread effects which are not particularly clear, because as the name suggests, the whole body is affected rather then just the ear as in noise exposure. The effects are manifested throughout the body and may be mistaken for a number of other ailments. The most common problem is lower back pain, probably caused by degeneration of the spinal discs. These discs are already affected by long periods of sitting, and vibration exposure only makes matters worse by causing nutrients needed for growth and repair to diffuse out of the discs; this leads to increased wear and reduced repair of the discs. The spine can also be damaged by the vibration energy that leads to an accumulation of small (micro) fractures at the end plates and associated pain. Muscle fatigue also occurs as the machine operator tries to react to the vibration and maintain balance and protect the spinal column.
