Travis Hollis Channel G March 6, 2007 Vocab 17 Week Seventeen Anachronism- something or someone that is not in its correct historical or chronological time, esp. a thing or person that belongs to an earlier time: The sword is an anachronism in modern warfare. • The war guns of the past are anachronism to today’s war. Anathema- a person or thing detested or loathed: • That subject is anathema to him. Contiguous- touching; in contact. • Some sicknesses and be spread contiguously by people. Contingency- dependence on chance or on the fulfillment of a condition; uncertainty; fortuitousness: Nothing was left to contingency. • When I raced motocross I got contingency money only if I got top spots. Extemporize- to speak extemporaneously: He can extemporize on any of a number of subjects. • I can talk about anything and extemporize. Impeccable- faultless; flawless; irreproachable: impeccable manners. • My car is impeccable and I keep it clean. Imperturbable- incapable of being upset or agitated; not easily excited; calm: imperturbable composure. • When some one is on drugs they are imperturbable and calm. Inarticulate- lacking the ability to express oneself, esp. in clear and effective speech: an inarticulate public speaker. • Some kids try to fit in because they are inarticulate. Posthumous- arising, occurring, or continuing after one's death: a posthumous award for bravery. • When a person dies you must be posthumous and move on. Postulate- to ask, demand, or claim. • When some one postulate me to get things for them I get mad! Pragmatic- of or pertaining to a practical point of view or practical considerations. • Men I ask my dad things he tells me the pragmatic view of everything. Rectitude- rightness of principle or conduct; moral virtue: the rectitude of her motives. • I feel rectitude when I help other people. Synthetic- of, pertaining to, proceeding by, or involving synthesis (opposed to ANALYTIC). • Tantamount- equivalent, as in value, force, effect, or signification: His angry speech was tantamount to a declaration of war. • When you buy things you give the clerk the tantamount of money for the object. Torpor- sluggish inactivity or inertia. • My truck is torpor and does not go fast.
Transitory- not lasting, enduring, permanent, or eternal. • Gum is transitory and the taste does not last long.
