RESPIRATORY TRACT drugs Indication

1. Decongestants local vasoconstriction decrease overproduction of secretions NasaL steroid

S/E

common cold, sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, relief of OM local burning/irritation dryness of mucosa, headache

a. Beclomethasone b. Budesonide Topical

a. topical ehphedrine b. phenylephrine

tachycardia, increase BP, anxiety cool & clammy skin, pallor

Oral

a. pseudoephedrine 2. Antihistamines block histamine --> decrease Inflammation

a. b. c. d.

allergic rhinitis, sinusitis

sedation, skin dryness, urinary retention

diphenhydramine cetirizine (Virlix, Zytec) hydroxyzine (Iterax) loratadine (Claritin)

3. Expectorants

increase productive cough to clear airways

bronchitis, pneumonia

GI upset headache & dizziness

a. guiafenesin b. terpin hydrate 4. Mucolytics

liquefy secretions to clear Airways

a. acetylcysteine b. dornase –alfa 5. Antitussives a. codeine central acting--> reduce excitability b. dextromethorphan of cough center c. benzonatate peripheral acting --> block signals d. demulcents fr vagus & glossopharyngeal nerves (honey, olive oil, glycerin)

GI upset, stomatitis, bronchospasm post-op clearing of secretions cystic fibrosis resp depression addiction, CNS depression constipation, dizziness, drowsiness
