CLINICAL RESEARCH IN MEDICINE? Drs. Thomas Zarchy, MD, and Kian Keyashian, MD, are currently undertaking a research project looking at an interesting gastrointestinal disorder (Ulcerative Colitis) in a unique population, namely the Latino population that is served by Los Angeles County Hospital. The project is aimed at understanding the specific genes that may contribute to the disease and impact its course.
Drs. Zarchy and Keyashian are looking for a motivated undergraduate student who would be interested in medical research. Interested students should be available on Tuesday mornings from 8:00am to 1:00pm during the Los Angeles County Gastroenterology Clinic. She/he should ideally also be fluent in Spanish, the language commonly spoken by many of the patients at the clinic. The role of the student would be to discuss the research project with the patients, obtain consent from the patients, and obtain tissue samples from the patients with a simple Q-tip cheek swab.
