The UJ is a premier African city university. With some 40 000 students, we are one of the largest residential universities in the country, reflecting more choices, more opportunities and greater diversity. The University offers a comprehensive range of learning programmes – from career-oriented and traditional academic to professional and post-graduate qualifications – and a host of sports, arts and cultural activities. We belong to different cultures, we have diverse backgrounds and we speak many languages – here we embrace and value our rich diversity. This is the kind of environment in which students excel academically and intellectually, and in which they are encouraged to develop into confident balanced individuals. UJ students are provided with opportunities to be educated in all facets of life. Born from the merger between the former Rand Afrikaans University, the Technikon Witwatersrand and two campuses of the Vista University on 1 January 2005, the UJ has the benefit of creating its own new identity as a vibrant, embracing city university with a diverse campus community. Moreover, in spite of being a young university, the UJ is building on the solid foundations of the many years of proven excellence and experience of its founding partners. It is also a university that is acutely aware of its social responsibility and that understands the needs of our country. At the University of Johannesburg we strive to graduate informed, reflective, thinking and well-rounded pioneers and builders of our nation. Here students have the opportunity to develop their potential to the fullest. We invite you to enroll at one of the foremost higher education institutions on the African continent! Prof Ihron Rensburg Vice-Chancellor and Principal

Programme offerings and requirements To be able to gain access to a faculty and specific programmes, applicants are required to have the appropriate combination of recognised NSC subjects as well as certain levels of achievement in these subjects as set out. Minimum entry requirements for studies as legislated by the government do not guarantee a learner admission to any programme or field of study. Preliminary admission is based on the results obtained in the final Grade 11 examination. Final admission is based on the final Grade 12 results. Applicants must meet the criteria set by other faculties with regard to their chosen academic subjects. All additional criteria for specific learning area specialisations, and/or specific subject methodologies have to be met as well. Applicants may also be expected to write an admission/placement test for all qualifications. The University of Johannesburg and its faculties have the right to change the requirements of a specific field of study. A restricted number of students are accepted in certain fields of study. In addition to the general minimum admission requirements, programme-specific entry requirements may apply.

English as entrance requirement Good English reading and writing skills as well as an aboveaverage understanding of the language is required of international students interested in pursuing their studies at the UJ. Therefore English language proficiency as an additional admission requirement is applicable to all prospective foreign students who wish to follow a formal programme or course (regardless of the level) at the UJ. IELTS test University policy requires that foreign, non-Englishspeaking applicants sit for the internationally recognised English language competency test called IELTS (International English Language Testing System). English as official language If English is one of the official languages in your country of residence and you are therefore a first- or secondlanguage English speaker, it will not be necessary to sit for this English test. However, you would need to submit proof of your English competency to the UJ when applying. Only submitted proof of one of the following results will be considered for exemption: 1. Cambridge matric. This includes A level (at least symbol E) and O level, English (symbol A, B or C); OR 2. HIGSE English (symbol 1, 2 or 3); OR 3. International Baccalaureate (symbol 5, 6 or 7); OR 4. AS level (symbol A, B or C), OR 5. SA grade 12 school-leaving certificate (first-language pass at least symbol D (HG); second-language pass symbol, at least symbol C (HG)). Where English is not an official language If English is not an official language in your country you need to sit for the IELTS test to be considered for admission to the UJ. You are responsible for making an appointment for taking this test and for the costs thereof. A certified copy of the results must be submitted with the application form and other required documents when you apply to the University. The admission score is 6 for undergraduates and 7 for postgraduates (9 being the highest). This test is only valid for two years. Where to enquire to write the IELTS test The IELTS test is administered by the British Council or the IDP Australia, depending on the country. They have centres all over the world where you may take this test. For more details and to make an appointment, please visit their website: http://www.ielts.org/. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Unfortunately the TOEFL is not accepted by the University of Johannesburg. Students who are interested in improving their English language skills can contact the WITS Language School at www.wls.ac.za or phone them at +27 11 717 4206 / 4207 / 4208, or contact them on email:
[email protected]. The language school will prepare student for writing the IELTS test. INTERNATIONAL LEGAL REQUIREMENTS Study permits If you are not a South African citizen or do not have permanent residence status in South Africa, you would need to apply for a study permit for the UJ. As an international applicant, you are required to apply for admission to the UJ first. If your application is successful, a letter of admission status (conditional/provisional) will be sent to you, after which you may apply for a study permit for the UJ. You may apply for a study permit from the South African embassy or South African diplomatic mission in
your country or at any Home Affairs Office in South Africa. (Please visit UJ’s International Office home page for the exceptions: www.uj.ac.za/international) For more detailed information, we suggest that you contact the South African diplomatic mission nearest to you. You may also visit the website of the Department of Home Affairs for more information: www.dha.gov.za NB: Please note that your study permit may not be issued to you if you cannot provide proof of accommodation in South Africa. Medical / Health Cover In terms of the Immigration Amendment Act 19 of 2004, any prospective student to the Republic of South Africa, must be in possession of medical cover with a medical scheme registered in terms of the Medical Schemes Act 131 of 1998. In order to comply with the above requirement, the University requires proof of full medical cover with a South African-based medical aid scheme for a full calendar year. Is a hospital plan acceptable? No, you need to take out a medical cover that will cover ALL medical costs while you are in South Africa for your studies. Please take careful note of the conditions of your medical insurance coverage as to whether you should be admitted to state hospitals or private hospitals/clinics. Since a hospital plan excludes most medical expenses, a hospital plan only will NOT be acceptable. The Board of Medical Schemes in South Africa Appropriate medical cover should be registered with the Board of Medical Schemes Act of South Africa. Governments who sponsor their students to study in South Africa should check their medical cover situation and make sure it is either registered in South Africa or formally recognised by the Department of Home Affairs. If you are a sponsored student, please ensure that you advise your sponsor of this requirement. When applying for your study permit please take proof of your medical cover to the South African Mission concerned. You are also required to bring this proof to the International Office when you arrive to register at the University. You will NOT be permitted to register without medical cover. You are welcome to visit the website of the Board of Medical Schemes in South Africa to explore other medical cover options. Website: www.medicalschemes.com Proof of medical cover at Registration When international students arrive on campus to register it is the responsibility of the UJ’s international office to request proof of medical cover. You will not be allowed to register without this. Medical cover advice To help you decide which product best suits your needs, you may contact Yenzani Financial Services, the UJ’s health care intermediaries. They have been appointed to assist international students in making their choice. They can be contacted on Helpdesk +27 86 6506 916 or at www.yenzani.co.za Please Note: By law the UJ may not register any foreign student without the correct study permit for the University of Johannesburg and proof of SA medical cover.

Applications International fees When an international student is accepted for studies, the FULL amount for the whole year is payable upon registration. This includes the registration and tuition fees as well as the international levy. Unfortunately, no exceptions may be made. The UJ is required by South African law to enforce this regulation. International levy All international students pay an international levy upon registration. This is additional to the tuition and registration fee. The levy is non-refundable and expires on 31 December every year. Exchange students Tuition fees and the international levy are waived for students participating in official UJ exchange agreements. However, the student is financially liable for any courses taken outside of that agreement. Campus accommodation Student accommodation on campus is extremely limited. You may contact the Residence Office on +27 11 559 1185 to find out about available accommodation. You may also contact the International Admissions Office on: +27 11 559 2528. Private accommodation As an alternative at the APK Campus, it is suggested that you obtain private accommodation. You may contact the private accommodation provider, Uni-Stay for offcampus accommodation. Uni-Stay, which operates as an independent contractor. Students deal directly with Uni-Stay for placement. They have an office in the Student Centre on the APK Campus and can be contacted on +27 11 559 3628 / 3901 or fax no +27 11 559 2624. You can also email them at

Faculty of Education “I touch the future. I teach.” – Christa McAuliffe The UJ’s Faculty of Education is engaged and dynamic in advancing education as professional practice and field of scholarly inquiry through excellence in teaching, research and community service that promote freedom, democracy, equality and human dignity. What shall we teach those who will be teachers? We may teach them what we know – but we must also enable them to pursue knowledge we do not yet have. We may teach them how to nurture learning in a variety of environments – but we need to provide an environment that will inspire them to want to nurture learning. We may teach them the relevance of an ethos of care in education – but would it not be better to show this by the way we teach them? Although our Conceptual Framework serves as our guiding principles in the design and execution of all our learning programmes, they are perhaps most visibly embodied in our three Initial Professional Education of Teachers (IPET) programmes, namely: Bachelor of Education (BEd) – Senior Phase (Grades 7 – 9) Bachelor of Education (BEd) – Further Education and Training (FET) Phase (Grades 10 – 12) Bachelor of Education (BEd) – Foundation Phase (Grade R – 3) These programmes are not “how to teach” programmes. Their focus is not on theories or on giving guidelines for “the transfer of knowledge”. Instead, they were designed to prepare our students to be critical thinkers, capable of continuous evaluation of their own contribution to education as well as to the wider community. In addition, through both the choice of learning content and the manner in which student learning is guided and supported, these programmes are aimed at inspiring our students to care – about those they will teach, about what they will teach and about the way that their teaching can change their world.

Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment The UJ’s Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment is now one of the largest and best-equipped faculties in Southern Africa. With the high demand for engineers in our rapidly developing country, the Faculty is a leading provider of well-qualified and accredited engineers, technologists and technicians for the industry. The faculty is well known for its exceptional standard of education and research offering programmes that are accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). Engineering is the discipline of acquiring and applying scientific and technical knowledge to the design, analysis and/or construction of works for practical purposes. The history of the concept of engineering stems from the earliest times when humans began to make ingenious inventions, such as the pulley, lever, wheel, etc. The denotation of the modern word “engineer” relates to a person occupationally connected with the study, design and implementation of ingenious devices for human use. The word “engine” derives from the Latin ingenium, meaning the insight and ability to provide solutions for the technical needs of society to live constructive and satisfactory lives. In a nutshell, an engineer is essentially someone who makes useful or practical inventions necessary for everyday life.

Intellectually, the Faculty is vibrant, with a strong research output, numerous public seminars, and a healthy tradition of debate. Students are encouraged to question and explore, and to interrogate knowledge paradigms rather than simply accept them. A principal objective of the Faculty is to produce graduates capable of advanced analytical and critical thinking skills, independent and progressive thinking, allowing them to access and contribute towards all forms of human knowledge, and to make dynamic interventions in their chosen professions. Humanities graduates often achieve public prominence, and contribute towards social change aimed at increasing the social good.

Faculty of Science The Faculty of Science prides itself on its vibrant, dynamic and diverse scientific community of scholars who are passionate about enhancing the learning experience of their students, enhancing the research profile of the Faculty and enhancing the academic, social and economic impact of the Faculty’s teaching and research programmes. Innovative education, internationally competitive research, as well as community development, are integrated into a dynamic synergy.
We provide outstanding service to our students in respect of learning programmes, learning facilities, in-service training and a learning environment that is conducive to life-long learning. Extended programmes are offered as alternative access routes to students who require them, and academic support and mentorship programmes are provided to students who need additional guidance and assistance. Our students are in great demand in the business sector and contribute significantly to the industry. The Faculty is an active player in a wider network of national and international partnerships and collaborations. One example is a joint PhD programme with the reputable St Andrews University in Scotland. With regard to undergraduate programmes, we are proud that the UJ is the only university in Africa, and only the third outside the UK, that holds accreditation from the British Computer Society for our BSc degree programme in Information Technology. These and other international partnerships with prestigious institutions are testimony to the high esteem that our staff, students and programmes enjoy in the international community. Each year, several staff members and students receive national and international acclaim for research and other academic achievements. It is also a great source of satisfaction to the Faculty that it has a unique state-of-the-art analytical research facility, which houses the multi-user analytical apparatus of the Faculty in a single unit. It is evident from all of the above that the Faculty of Science is fully dedicated to realising all of its ideals.
