During this period England changed from rural, agricultural country to and urban, industrialised one. This involved massive dislocation and radically altered the nature of society. Besides from the ecomonical aspects, this age (Victorian) was the most influential change in literary works especially in novel and poetry. The beginning literature of the victorian age started from 1837-1901. The literature of victorian age, ofcourse, is part of the era of Queen Victoria. This kind of literature is well known as the Victorian era literature. The literature of Victorian age was prefaced by the romanticism and followed by the modernism. It is followed by modernism because the Victorian’s literature end in the beginning of modernism age. Therefore, referring to the history, this era also can be called a fusion of romantic and realist style of writing. As long the Victorian age authorization, it produce many kind of genres of literary works.

1. Detective fiction Genre of the novel or short story in which a mystery is solved mainly by the action of a professional or amateur detective.

2. Historical Novel Genre of fictional prose narrative set in the past. Literature set in the historic rather than the immidiate past has always abounded.

3. Mystery Literary genre in which the cause (or causes) of a myterious happening, often a crime, is gradually revealed by the hero or heroine.

4. Romance In literature, tales of love and chivalric adventure, in verse or prose.

5. Science fiction Literary genre in which a background of science or pseudoscience is an integral part of the story. This genre is always linked to the fantastic litarature.

6. Short story

Short work of prose fiction.In addition, there two the great poets in the victorian age (Alfred Lord Tennyson & Robert Browning). However this age is also remarkable for the excellence of its prose.

A. Characteristics of Victorian Novel The novel in this era tend to depict the potraits of the difficult lives (hard work, perseverance, love and luck). The novel also ussually inclines toward being of improving nature with a central moral lesson at heart. B. Characteristic of Victorian Poetry Based on the explaination above, many of style of the poetry in the Victorian era is the bridge between the era of romantic and the era of modernism. Due to this age happens at the beginning of romatic era and beginning of modernism era. If it is examined, Victorian literature found in both classical literature and also medieval literature of England. The Victorian loved the heroic, chivalrous stories of knights. If so, many of Victoria literature use the mixed-writing style both in romaticism and modernism. Common themes in Victorian Literature If one notice deeply, all the great writers of this period, many of them will be marked by three general characteristics of the Victorian literature. Firstly, literature in the Victorian age tended to come face to face with realism. This is the reflection of practical problems and interests. Secondly, the Victorian literature seems to deviate from the strict principle “art for art’s sake” and asserts its moral purpose. One of the example of poet is Alfred Lord Tennyson, Robert Browning, Ruskin Bond. Three of them were the teavher with the faith in the moral message. Thirdly, this era was more like the age of pessimism and confusion. Referring to some referencees, the persistent of Victoria literature has had a profound influence on modern literature and media. The writers such as Charles Dickens and the Bronte Sisters still sell robustly on most book resellers’ lists and frequently adapted into the film and television production. In addition, the modern novels also effect the Victorian literature indirectly.
