Raisins are dehydrating grapes that are heat dried or used in mechanical oven for drying. There are different types of raisins; there are Sultana, Malaga, Monukka, Zante Currant, Muscant and Thompson seedless. Though raisins are a dried fruit they are very sweet tasting and have a wrinkly texture. They are one of the most nutritious dried fruits in the world. Raisins are cholesterol-free, low in sodium and totally fat-free. They provide many necessary vitamins and minerals, including iron, potassium, calcium and certain B vitamins. Raisins are a good source of fiber and rich in antioxidants. Raisins are 70% pure fructose (a natural form of sugar) which is easily digested for quick energy!

Health benefits of Raisins: ANTIOXIDANT Raisins rank among the top antioxidant foods. Eating plenty of fruits high in antioxidants, such as raisins helps keep the blood clean and flowing. Antioxidants protect our bodies against free radical damage. It is important to get antioxidants in to our body through the food we eat. Antioxidants helps get rid of all unclean impurities in the blood, helps slow the processes associated with aging in both body and brain. Antioxidants have also been linked to Cancer prevention. The antioxidant catechin, found in raisins, have the potential to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer, colorectal adenomas and other gastrointestinal tumors.

SOURCE OF ENERGY Raisins are good source of energy. Raisins are high in calories, which is important for athletes, and helps them boast their energy naturally before a game. Raisins are an effective, practical way to maintain blood sugar levels and support the demand of energy during sports activities. This is important because it means a more steady fuel supply to the exercising muscle.

SOURCE OF FIBER Raisins are a good source of fiber Fiber in raisins, combined with other food from plants high in fiber, helps to regulate intestinal function and proper elimination. Raisins like grapes are one of the few fruits that contain a reasonable level of tartaric acid that works together with fiber to help proper elimination and help keep the colon healthy. To stop constipation boil raisins in a saucepan of water drain them and drink the juice. Dietary fiber and other components may reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer by binding bile acids and causing their elimination from the body. Eating fibrous foods, such as raisins, stimulates the body to replace the bile acids that have been eliminated by making them from its own cholesterol, thus potentially lowering serum cholesterol and the risk of coronary heart disease. Furthermore, bile acids that are bound by fibers such as those in raisins will not be metabolized to a more toxic form and this may potentially reduce cancer risk.

POTASSIUM TO MAINTAIN PROPER BLOOD PRESSURE Many studies have shown the importance of diets with an adequate intake of potassium to help maintain normal blood pressure. Since raisins are high in potassium and low in sodium this makes them an ideal part of a heart healthy diet. Raisins are rich in potassium while low in sodium (3 oz contains 646 mg potassium and 10 mg sodium). It is well accepted that potassium helps to reduce blood pressure. The DASHSodium diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), which is rich in potassium, has been successfully used to treat patients with high blood pressure. Other benefits of a potassium in the diet include: It may reduce the risk of stroke (independent of its effect on blood pressure) It may help prevent the development of some types of kidney disease It reduces calcium excretion which may help bone health and reduce the formation of kidney stones It may play a role in carbohydrate intolerance It may help reduce the risk of heart arrhythmias in some patients with heart disease.

GOOD EYESIGHT Raisins are also a preventative measure for Macular Degeneration. Just as carrots are good for our eyesight as are raisins.

ORAL HEALTH Raisins are also great for healthy gums and teeth. Raisins do not cause cavities and gum disease, and rather promote oral health because of the oleanolic acid found within them. This acid is very effective in killing the bacteria that cause cavities and periodontal dental disease. Oleanolic acid inhibits the growth of Streptococcus.mutans, the bacteria in the mouth responsible for tooth decay. Oleanolic acid and other compounds in raisins also inhibit organisms associated with periodontal disease, including Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum. Oleanolic acid is most effective in suppressing plaque formation by Streptococcus mutans. Prevention of plaque building up on the tooth surface is critical both for preventing tooth decay and promoting healthy gums.

BONE HEALTH Raisins contains Calcium which is important for good bone health. The minerals in raisins in conjunction with estrogen in women help make bones stronger and ward off osteoporosis.

WEIGHT CONTROL When hungry for a snack reach for a handy packet of raisins for a natural satisfying snack. In a recent weight loss class people found that a few raisins would satisfy their hunger and prevent overeating.

“Overall, raisins help with eyesight, oral hygiene and they act as antioxidants. Raisins are sweet and great tasting and promote good health” health”
