The Indian cement industry is the second largest in the world. The first cement industry was setup in 1904 in Gujarat. The cement Manufactures Association of India formed in 1927. The industry employs a workforce of over 1.5 lakh persons and 12 lakh persons indirectly. The Cement industry plays a key role in the national economy.

The Travancore Cements was incorporated in the year 1946. Started production of Vembanad Grey cement from lime shell , in 1949. Company was made with F.L SMIDTH &CO.,DENMARK for producing White cement . Liscensed capacity of the plant is 50,800 Tonnes per annum. Till 1975 company produce both grey & white cement. Diversified into cement paint Super shelcem production in the year 1977.

Celebrated silver jubilee in the year 1972. Became a Govt: company in April 1989. Celebrated golden jubilee in the year 1997. Launched dry cement primer ‘Shel prime’ in the year 2000. Became an ISO 9002 Company in December 2000.

EMPLOYEE POTENTIAL  

In TCL,There are totally 595 employees. The employees of the company are classified in to Three categories (1) Officers (2) Staffs (3) Workers

CONTD.. Work schedule  The office time of TCL is from 9.00 am to 5.00pm on working days. On Saturdays office time is till 1.00 pm.  The factory is working on shift basis.   

1st shift : 12.00 midnight to 8.00 am 2nd shift : 8.00 am to 4.00 pm 3rd shift : 4.00 pm to 12.00

A fare price canteen is operating at the premises of the company . A limited number of employees are provided with quarters with free electricity and water. Free transportation facility provided to employees for coming to duty and return after duty . Company’s products is sold to employees at fair price. The company provides educational allowance for the children of permanent employees.

In TCL ,there is an authorized purchasing system. The purchase units are follows Below and up to Rs.5000; Purchase are maintained by Junior Manager and sanctioned by Chief Manager. Rs.5000 to Rs.1,00,000; Chief Manager should sanctioned it. Rs.1,00,000 to 5,00,000; Managing Director should sanctioned it.

Stores department is near to the consumable departments. Stores department keeps & control the use of raw materials . Stores department is concerned with purchase and storage of general items needed in the factory. There are 800 items in the store department.

Cement paint is produced using white cement as the base material. Additives – water proofing compounds, an oxide extender, non fading oxide pigments ,hardening agents & fungicides. Cement paint is a water based paint. Total 40 different shades .

TCL has an advertisement budget of 25 Lakhs per annum. Conducting Dealers meeting once in two years. Company offers various incentive scheme to Dealers for their sales performance. Company engages in advertisement through News papers, visual media etc. TCL give trade discount of 10% and cash discount of 4% for the purchase of 250Kg and above

Company has mainly two sections Electrical section 24 Employees are working in this section. Electrical section undertakes Thr ee types of maintenance works, i.e.. Breakdo wn, Preve nt ive , and Shu tdo wn maintenance.

The study provides useful insights into the company and it’s functioning. TCL’ products have been greatest success in the market. TCL happens to be the only manufacturer of white cement with lime shell as it’s main raw material. With the implementation of new technology, finding an alternative for the high cost furnace oil, improving the marketing strategies and solving the existing problems, the company is ensured of bright prospects.
