What is it: A movement against established religion  A movement against materialism  A movement for simplicity  A reliance on intuition and the conscience 

Who started it: A group of radical thinkers and writers of the 1830s-1850s  They were known as the New England Transcendentalists  Most known writers: Emerson, Thoreau, Fuller 

Their Beliefs: A certain “truth” exists in all of creation  Reasoning is better than just understanding  Materialism corrupts society  Simplicity and individuality are two keys to life 
