“THEOLOGY OF WORK – MAKING SENSE OF THE OTHER 6 DAYS”

Course of Paul Stevens in Budapest, October 12-16, 2009 About the course: Most people spend most of their waking hours working, yet seldom reflect on its significance. Further, the church frequently gives priority to the in-church activities and the professional ministries without affirming that the whole people of God are in “full time” ministry Monday to Friday, and often Saturday as well. It is therefore worthwhile to explore the definition of “work” from a theological point of view. This course offers this opportunity for the participants, with a focus on the Bible in the context of the everyday life. The course will involve learning as a community and putting into practice the theology of work one has gained. Course topics: - God at work and rest: the Trinitarian theology of work - Humankind: the creating creature - “Shrewd like the snake” – leadership models from the Old Testament judges and kings. - Having the heart of God for work and the workplace: examples from the Old Testament prophets. - Jesus and work from the point of view of God’s World. - Why and how to work: examples from the New Testament Apostolic Letters. - The anointed worker: the Holy Spirit and everyday work. - The work on Earth with treasures in Heaven - The work as profession - Work and rest - Work ethic Program of the course: The program of the week will include lectures, group interaction, reflection and work place visits. There will be assignments to be completed outside of class as well as a time of summarizing the class learning. Lectures will be held in English, with simultaneous translation. The participation of foreigners can allow an international scope on the course. The course will run from Monday till Friday from 8 am until 4:30 pm. Although the program of the course builds on each other, it is also possible to attend only part of it. The lecturer: Paul Stevens is the professor at the BGU University of Seattle and the also professor emeritus at Regent College of Vancouver. As a pastor and professor he worked in universities of North-America for more than 20 years. His area of service covered not only the leadership of congregations but also pastoral counseling to business people and youth. He is also the author of several books.
