St. Genevieve members see plans for church Friday, November 16, 2007

Bayou Liberty Parishioners of St. Genevieve Catholic Church have had their first look at the proposed new church. An architect's rendition of the plan agreed upon by the parish building committee to rebuild the church and rectory that was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina was recently revealed and explained by Deacon Dan Haggerty. The church will be built more than 16 feet above sea level, which is about 12 feet off the ground. Provisions for use of the stained glass windows from the previous church have been made so the beautiful and meaningful windows will be utilized in the new church. Advertisement

A provision has been made to increase seating capacity as the need arises by moving a Plexiglas partition to accommodate 750 worshipers, without additional cost. There will be handicapped elevators, and an elevated driveway is also in the plans. Cost of the new church; a steeple to house the original St. Genevieve bell; a new rectory; possible relocation of the votive chapel; and building an office building is $11 million. There is a possibility the project will have to be divided into two phases, depending on the financing. If this happens, phase two would include the steeple, chapel and elevated driveway.

The Archdiocese of New Orleans will provide 75 percent of the cost upfront. The Federal Emergency Managment Agency will not provide any money for the church. Clearing for the rectory has already begun.
