June 2009 Teacher Interview Day Confirmation Information Dear Teacher Interview Day Candidate: This is to confirm your registration for the Spring 2009 Teacher Interview Day for Hillsborough County Public Schools that will be held on Wednesday, June 10 and Thursday, June 11, 2009, at Thomas Jefferson Senior High School. We have worked very hard to ensure that this event is an efficient and opportune way for you to meet and interview with school and district administrators who are seeking teachers for 2009-2010 school year. On the designated day, candidates should begin to arrive at 7 a.m. Time will be available during the morning in order to schedule interviews with school representatives. The individual interviews with school administrators will be scheduled in 30-minute segments beginning at 9 a.m. The last interview will begin at 3:30 p.m. Vacancies for 2009-2010 will be posted on the Human Resources website beginning June 09, 2009. To preview these vacancies, access the district’s Human Resources website at www.sdhc.k12.fl.us/HumanResources. Candidates should bring five-ten copies of their resumé to distribute to school administrators. Also, please bring a copy of your most recent transcript(s), Statement of Status of Eligibility, or current teacher certificate/license (if available). A review of your transcript(s) may be required to verify your eligibility for certification. It is important to note that this will be a formal interview process; therefore, professional business attire is appropriate for this event. Jefferson High School has ample parking spaces to accommodate both district personnel and teacher candidates. Parking spaces will be available on the bus ramp, driver’s education range, and at Roland Park K-8 School. Directions to Jefferson Senior High School are enclosed for your convenience. Please enter on the south side of the high school. Please note that principals will conduct interviews only for subject area positions as indicated in the Spring 2009 Teacher Interview Day Announcement. Also, note that this day is only the beginning of the interviewing/hiring process. After the Teacher Interview Day, applicants may contact school administrators to set up additional interviews. Some principals may wish to check teacher candidates’ references before making a final hiring decision. Others may offer positions during the day. What To Expect At The Teacher Interview Day Teacher Interview Day Format The Teacher Interview Day is an open interview format. You will check-in at the auditorium lobby, receive your nametag, a printed list of vacancies and an envelope of materials. You will be directed to the auditorium for orientation. The orientation moderator will announce the time that candidates will proceed to the gymnasium to schedule interviews with their desired schools. Schools will have tables in the gymnasium, in alphabetical order. You will circulate among the tables to locate schools that have openings in your subject area. Approach the administrator to offer your resume. Schools will have the option of inviting candidates for an interview during the fair or they may collect resumes and contact candidates at a later date. You can interview for as many positions as you desire in the allotted time.

Accepting a Job During the event, school administrators will be offering candidates positions for school vacancies. If you accept a position, you will be sent to HR for processing, which commits you to that location for the school year. Job offers are contingent upon:   

Human Resources receiving the recommended satisfactory references, and receipt of official transcripts with the degree posted. Certification eligibility for the area you are recommended to teach; and Authorization/clearance from Professional Standards.

Once you accept a position, you will no longer be eligible to interview for other positions or attend other interview events. Any scheduled interviews you have left, must be taken to the Cancelation Desk (located in the middle of the large hallway). This will allow other candidates to pick up interviews from candidates who have been hired. At the Teacher Interview Day, you will be fingerprinted, complete a New Employee Processing packet and make your benefit selections. Please review the benefits available to you at www.sdhc.k12.fl.us. During your processing you will need:  Your Original Social Security Card or approved printout from the Social Security Office  Drivers License,  Money Order for $24 fingerprinting monitoring fee, another  Money Order for $57.25 fingerprinting fee,  A blank check for Direct Deposit,  Legal names, address(es), and birth dates of those you intend to make your beneficiary(ies).  Either credit card or money order for $75 per subject area to apply for your Florida Teacher Certificate (if necessary),  Please review the benefits available to you at www.sdhc.k12.fl.us/employeebenefits

Bring 5-10 copies of your résumé, including references. Bring a copy of your transcripts (if not already on file with the school district). The Certification Office may need to review course work to determine eligibility for certification. Candidates who hold a current teaching certificate issued by another state or have received a Statement of Status of Eligibility issued by the Florida Department of Education, should bring a copy of this document in order to verify subject area certification.



Professional business attire and comfortable shoes are appropriate for this event.



Arrive early enough to find parking and to check in at the registration table in a timely manner.





Please note that this is an interview day. Some principals may offer employment during the Teacher Interview Day. Others may wish to conduct a reference check before making a final offer of employment. All principals will be seeking the best and brightest highly qualified candidates to join their teams. We recommend that you find out as much information as possible about the district and the schools before the Teacher Interview Day. During the Teacher Interview Day, please cancel interviews with remaining schools should you accept a job offer before you have completed your interview schedule. This will allow school and district administrators to interview other candidates during that scheduled time. The cancellation table will be located in the middle of the large center hallway.

Spring 2009 TEACHER INTERVIEW DAY MAKING THE MOST OF AN INTERVIEW PRIOR TO THE INTERVIEW – YOU SHOULD:  Decide if you will accept a position in the school or district, if offered.  Learn as much as you can about the district, school and community. Decide if you would be willing to make a visit to the community for a follow-up interview.  Learn the name of the interviewer.  Arrange to be on time.  Be prepared to respond to questions within the given time limits. Be concise, give examples, and do not ramble.  Formulate intelligent questions to ask about the district and/or the school. Ask questions that would help you decide whether you want to work there.  Appear neatly dressed and well groomed. DURING THE INTERVIEW – YOU SHOULD:     

Call the interviewer by name. Be mentally alert and physically relaxed. Be sincere, honest, and concise when responding to questions. Be an active participant; show enthusiasm in the discussion. Ask questions and initiate topics, if necessary, to make certain that the interviewer knows all that you want him/her to know about you.

AFTER THE INTERVIEW – YOU SHOULD:  Write a letter to: Thank the interviewer for his/her courtesy and time, Express continued interest in the school or district, Refer to the highlights of the interview.  Keep the school/district in which you are interested informed of any changes in name, address, or telephone number.  Follow-up with a visit to the school/community and other interviews, if appropriate.
