Senior setter Sam Dabbs distributed a season-best 13.83 assists per set as LSU cranked a .308 team hitting percentage in a pair of sweeps of South Carolina and No. 6 Florida It was LSU’s first win over Florida since 1991, a span of 26 matches. It also marked the first time since November 1990 that the Gators were swept in SEC regular season action. Dabbs’ 49 assists in a three-set match set a new benchmark by seven assists for SEC setters on the season. She fueled LSU’s middle attack of Brittnee Cooper, Michele Williams and Lauren DeGirolamo to 38 kills on a scorching .567 hitting percentage against the Gators. Dabbs also turned in a solid performance against South Carolina and dished out 34 assists to go along with 12 digs and nine kills to fall one spike shy of her second careerdouble. The San Antonio native also connected for a .360 hitting percentage, posted 3.33 digs per set and paces the SEC in assists per set in conference matches.

SEC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Gretchen Giesler - Kentucky, MB, So., 6-2

Sophomore Gretchen Giesler continues to be a major factor in UK’s offensive scheme while developing into UK’s top defensive performer at the net. Giesler posted 10 blocks in seven sets for an average of 1.43 blocks per set – well above her average of 1.00 per frame. Her presence at the net also helped force 33 errors by UK’s two opponents this weekend. In addition to her blocking presence she matched her careerhigh twice this weekend with three digs. Giesler additionally set a careerhigh with three assists in the win over Georgia. For the weekend she posted 2.00 kills per set on a .444 attack percentage.

SEC FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK Jasmine Norton - Arkansas, OH, 5-10

Norton turned in back-to-back 21-kill performances in Arkansas’ wins over Alabama and Mississippi State this week. She also posted her third and fourth consecutive double-double efforts. Against Alabama, Norton totaled 21 kills and 13 digs in the Razorbacks’ come-from-behind victory in five sets. In the decisive set, she had nine kills and six digs to help lead Arkansas back from a 12-6 deficit. In the weekend finale against Mississippi State, Norton had 21 kills and 14 digs and hit .390, her highest hitting percentage in a conference match this season. The 21 kills are the most by an SEC player in a league four-set match this season. Her 21kill effort is her third straight match with at least 20 kills. For the week, she averaged 4.67 kills per set, 3.00 digs per set and 4.89 points per set.

SEC Volleyball Notes • Kentucky and Florida rank in the Top 10 in the NCAA in team hitting percentange. • Kentucky jumped two spots to No. 8, while Florida fell three to No. 9. Prior to last week, the last time the SEC had two teams ranked in the top 10 was Oct. 23, 2006. • LSU has climbed into the Top 25 poll this week, giving the SEC three teams in the Top 25 for the first time since Oct. 16, 2006. Tennessee is receiving votes. This marks LSU’s return to the poll since Sept. 1, 2008. • Kentucky head coach Craig Skinner tallied his 100th career victory in a 3-0 UK sweep of Auburn Friday night in front of 1,411 fans in Memorial Coliseum. • With the Oct. 11 win over Florida, LSU snapped a 26-match losing streak to the Gators dating back to the 1991 season. The 3-0 sweep marked the first time the Gators have been swept in SEC regular season play since November 1990. • Sophomore right-side/setter Kelly Murphy has four triple-doubles this season to lead the SEC and holds the Florida career record in that category with 10. • The LSU Tigers have won six straight SEC road matches dating back to last season. It’s the first time since the 1992 and 1993 seasons since LSU has reached that feat. • With the loss to Kentucky, Florida ended its streak of 21 consecutive home victories and dropped its first regular-season home match in nearly five years. • Kentucky’s win at Florida was the first for the Wildcats since Oct. 1, 1989. • Coming off a 27-4 season and their 17th NCAA regional semifinal appearance in 18 years, the Gators also hold the nation’s longest stretch of 26-win seasons with 18 straight. • In the past 18 years, 1,049 student-athletes have earned selection to the SEC Academic Honor Roll.

Team-by-Team Notes ALABAMA Crimson Tide - The Alabama volleyball team dropped a pair of five-setters last weekend on the road at Arkansas (21-25, 25-21, 14-25, 28-26, 24-22) and Ole Miss (23-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-17, 17-15). Leading the Crimson Tide’s attacking core against the Razorbacks was junior Alyssa Meuth with 16 kills. Also tallying double-figure kills in the match was senior Brooks Webster with 15, sophomore Ashley Frazier with 14 and freshman Kayla Fitterer with 12. With her fifth kill on the night, Webster entered Alabama's top 10 list in career kills with 1,126. Junior Kayla Schmidt dished out a career-high tying 39 assists in addition to 16 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. On Sunday, Meuth, yet again, led the Tide with 17 kills, followed by Webster with 13 and Frazier with 11. Freshman Kelsey Anderson notched a career-best 24 digs in the match. Alabama returns home this week for a pair of SEC East matchups next weekend when it hosts Tennessee and No. 10 Kentucky. Friday's match against the Lady Volunteers is slated for 6:00 p.m. (CST) and will serve as this season's Power of Pink match. Sunday's contest with the Wildcats will begin at 1:30 p.m. (CST). ARKANSAS Razorbacks - The Razorback volleyball team completed a sweep of its weekend matches with wins over Alabama and Mississippi State at Barnhill Arena. In Friday’s contest, Arkansas rallied from a sixpoint deficit in the fifth set to upend the Crimson Tide, 21-25, 25-21, 14-25, 28-26, 24-22. The Razorbacks saved three match points and closed out the win on their eighth match point in front of 1,034 fans, the largest home crowd this season. The freshman duo of Jasmine Norton and Kendall Cleveland led the offensive charge with 21 and 12 kills, respectively. Lindsay Scanlan recorded a career-high 60 assists in the victory. In the weekend finale, Arkansas defeated Mississippi State, 25-20, 25-19, 23-25, 26-24, behind a fourth consecutive double-double performance from Norton with 21 kills and 14 digs. In the win, Cleveland and Amanda Anderson each tallied 14 kills. Arkansas hit .354 against the Bulldogs, its highest hitting percentage in a SEC match this season. This week, the Razorbacks will host Ole Miss on Oct. 14 in a midweek match at 7 p.m. before hitting the road for an Oct. 16 matchup with LSU. AUBURN Tigers - The Auburn volleyball team dropped a pair of SEC road matches this past weekend, falling to Kentucky 3-0 (18-25, 20-25, 11-25) and Tennessee 3-0 (23-25, 23-25, 20-25). The Tigers now are 11-7 overall and 3-4 against conference opponents. Versus Kentucky, freshman Sarah Bullock and junior Morgan Johns led the way offensively, each finishing with eight kills. Liz Crouch tallied a match-high 12 digs, while Katherine Culwell had nine digs. On Sunday, Lauren Mellor led the way for Auburn, tying a career-high with 11 kills and finishing with six digs. Junior setter Sara Shanks picked up her first double-double of the season, tallying 24 assists and 10 digs. Bullock and Crouch also picked up 10 digs on the match. Auburn returns to the Student Activities Center, hosting a pair of SEC matches. The Tigers take on No. 6 Florida at 6 p.m. on Friday and closes out the weekend with a 2:30 p.m. match against South Carolina, Sunday.

FLORIDA Gators - The Florida volleyball team split a pair of road matches this past week, defeating South Carolina in four sets on Wednesday evening in Columbia, S.C., before losing a three-set match at LSU on Sunday night in Baton Rouge, La., to run its record to 12-3 overall and 6-2 in Southeastern Conference play. On Wednesday night, sophomore outside hitters Kristy Jaeckel and Colleen Ward each turned in a match-high 18 kills, while sophomore right-side/setter Kelly Murphy charted her fourth triple-double of the season with 12 kills, 25 assists and a career-high 17 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Cassandra Anderson also tied her career-high with 10 blocks vs. the Gamecocks. On Sunday, Jaeckel tallied a team-high 12 kills on .321 hitting to lead the way for Florida, which out-blocked LSU 7-4. Ward leads the Gators on the season, averaging 3.32 kills per set, while Jaeckel and Murphy follow with 3.16 and 2.95 kills per set, respectively. Senior libero Elyse Cusack heads the team’s back-row effort, averaging 4.20 digs per set, while Anderson averages a squadbest 1.21 blocks per set. Florida returns to action this weekend when it travels to Auburn, Ala., to face Auburn at 7 p.m. ET Friday before traveling to Athens, Ga., to square off with Georgia at 1:30 p.m. ET Sunday. GEORGIA Bulldogs - The Georgia Bulldogs went on the road last weekend falling to Tennessee, 3-0, and to No. 10 Kentucky, 3-1. On the year, Georgia now stands at 11-7 overall and 2-5 in league play. On the week, Georgia's top offensive performer was sophomore middle hitter Ann Dylla with 18 kills and its top defender was sophomore libero Carla Tietz with 31 digs. This week, UGA begins a five-match home stand at the Ramsey Student Center in Athens against South Carolina on Friday and Florida on Sunday. The home stretch will also include matches against Mississippi State (Oct. 23), Alabama (Oct. 25) and Auburn (Oct. 28). KENTUCKY Wildcats - After enduring a tough road stretch, the Kentucky Wildcats escaped unscathed keeping their perfect SEC record intact with five-set victories over No. 5 Florida and South Carolina. It was the first victory for the Blue and White in Gainesville in 20 years, and Florida’s first loss at home since 2004. Junior Sarah Mendoza had her first back-to-back 20 or more kill performance in her career when she struck for 20 kills against the Gators and 21 more against South Carolina. It was a total team effort for UK in both matches as several Wildcats had career performances. Sophomore Becky Pavan had a career-high 16 kill effort in the win over the Gamecocks, while sophomore Gretchen Giesler had a career-high 11 kill performance against the Gators. Additionally, senior setter Sarah Rumely moved into second place all-time on UK’s career assists record list. UK returns home for a pair of conference matches this weekend and head coach Craig Skinner is just one win shy of his 100th career victory.

Team-by-Team Notes LSU Tigers - LSU extended its winning streak to six matches as the Tigers notched a pair of sweeps over South Carolina and No. 6 Florida to push its SEC Western Division lead to three matches. It was LSU’s first win over Florida since 1991, a span of 26 matches. It also marked the first time since November 1990 that the Gators were swept in SEC regular season action. Outside hitter Marina Skender tacked on a pair of doubles-doubles and her 4.15 kills per set in league matches are second in the SEC. Defensive specialist Sam Delahoussaye reeled in 4.00 digs per set and turned in a pair of 12-dig efforts. She also passed at an impressive .964 reception percentage and tallied a perfect percentage in nine of her last 12 matches. LSU squares off against Arkansas Friday at 7 p.m. inside the Maravich Center. The Tigers will wear pink uniforms as part of their “Dig Pink” match to benefit the Sideout Foundation. LSU matches up with Ole Miss Sunday at 1:30 p.m. OLE MISS Rebels - Ole Miss moved its record to 7-11 overall and 1-7 in the SEC this past weekend when the Rebels picked up their first conference win of the season with a 3-2 victory over Alabama on Sunday, after dropping a hard-fought contest to Mississippi State on Saturday. Freshman outside hitter Whitney Craven led the Rebel offense against the Crimson Tide as she notched a double-double with a season-high 20 kills and tied her season high with 15 digs. She was one of four Rebels to notch double-digit digs against the Tide. Senior right side Caitlin Weiss had a solid week for the Rebels, putting down a match-high 19 kills against Mississippi State to go along with 17 digs, while putting down 12 kills against the Crimson Tide. Sophomore outside hitter Katie Norris also put down 21 kills against Mississippi State. The win on Sunday marked the 100th win for Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin at the helm of the Rebel program. Ole Miss will return to the road this week with a pair of matches at Arkansas and No. 24 LSU. The Rebels take on Arkansas at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night, while facing the 24th-ranked LSU Tigers on Sunday in Baton Rouge at 1:30 p.m. The Rebels will have played six of their 10 conference matches on the road to open the season before continuing to play on the road next week as well, extending that streak to eight of the first 12 matches of the conference season being played on the road for a young Ole Miss team. MISSISSIPPI STATE Bulldogs - AAfter playing five of its last six league matches on the road, the Bulldogs (514, 1-7 SEC) return to action at the Newell-Grissom this weekend. State hosts SEC-leading Kentucky (17-1, 7-0 SEC) Friday (7 p.m.) and Eastern Division foe Tennessee (12-5, 52 SEC) Sunday (1:30 p.m.) to close out the first half of State’s 20match SEC volleyball schedule … State notched its first league win of the year and presented first-year head coach Jenny Hazelwood with her first career SEC coaching victory with a 3-2 decision over instate SEC rival Ole Miss last Friday in Oxford. The win snapped a pesky string of 23 setbacks in league volleyball play for State dating back to September 2008 … Sophomore middle hitter Caitlin Rance

matched a career-high with 13 kills in the win at Ole Miss and bettered that mark with 19 kills in a closely-contested Sunday match at Arkansas. Rance had 32 kills and hit at a .397 clip on the weekend … Junior middle blocker Ashley Newsome turned in a productive worksheet at the net for the weekend, tallying eight blocks against both Ole Miss and Arkansas. Newsome leads the team with 212 kills and 73 blocks, fourth-most blocks and fifth-most kills in the SEC. Newsome’s fourth kill at Arkansas was the 500th of her career … Senior setter Dorey Gray delivered back-to-back career-best fiveblock outings over the weekend and registered a career-best 46 assists at Arkansas … Senior outside hitter Ioana Demian totaled nine digs over the weekend and enters the week two away from the 500dig career milestone. SOUTH CAROLINA Gamecocks - The Gamecocks stumbled through the first stretch playing all four NCAA Tournament teams from the league last season, falling in the final two last week against Florida and LSU. Now South Carolina prepares to end the first half of the SEC season this weekend at Georgia and Auburn, who both have better league records than the Gamecocks. One bright spot was the play of senior libero Sarah Cline. She continued her double-digit dig streak, which she’s accomplished in every match this season, while also moving to within striking distance of second on South Carolina’s list. TENNESSEE Lady Volunteers - The University of Tennessee volleyball team returned to the win column with a pair of impressive league victories at home this weekend, sweeping both Georgia and Auburn. On Friday, the Lady Volunteers wasted little time defeating the Bulldogs in front of a regional television audience on SportsSouth, downing them, 25-11, 25-15, 25-17. UT outhit UGA, .367 to -.010, allowed only one run of more than two scores and trailed for a total of just three points in the entire match. Offensively, the Lady Vols were a machine, pounding out 40 kills with just seven errors on 90 swings for an impressive .367 hitting percentage, their second best effort of the 2009 campaign. Sophomore Kayla Jeter paced the attack, hitting at a career-high .611 clip with a match-high 11 kills on 18 attacks without a single miscue. Just two days later, the Big Orange welcomed Auburn to Knoxville with another 3-0 sweep, taking out the Tigers, 25-23, 25-23, 25-20 at Thompson-Boling Arena. Once again it was Jeter who paced the squad in kills, as she tallied 12, while hitting at a solid. 385 clip with just two errors on 26 swings. In addition, she notched a pair of blocks and three digs. For the weekend, Jeter recorded a team-high 23 kills and a remarkable .477 attack average (23-2-44). Junior Nikki Fowler also reached double-digits in kills with 10 against AU, while collecting an even 10 digs as well to account for her squad-best fourth double-double of the season and 22nd of her career. Tennessee will hit the road again next weekend as it is slated to take on Alabama at 7 p.m. CT in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Friday, Oct. 16 and Mississippi State at 1:30 p.m. two days later in Starkville, Miss. From there, the Lady Vols will make a brief return to Knoxville before making the trek up I-75 for a 7 p.m. showdown against No. 10 Kentucky in Lexington, Ky., on Wednesday, Oct. 21. That match will be televised live on ESPNU.

2009 VOLLEYBALL Preseason All-SEC Team The Southeastern Conference revealed its annual volleyball coaches preseason All-SEC team on Monday to launch the upcoming season of SEC volleyball. The coaches preseason All-SEC team consists of a minimum of nine players, which are voted on by the league coaches. Florida led all schools with three selections, followed by Kentucky with two. Coaches Vote Florida To Win 2009 SEC Volleyball Title BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Florida Gators were selected to win the 2009 Southeastern Conference volleyball title in a preseason vote by the league’s 11 coaches. The Gators have claimed 18 consecutive SEC titles, which is the NCAA record for consecutive conference title wins. Coming off a 27-4 season and their 17th NCAA regional semifinal appearance in 18 years, the Gators also hold the nation’s longest stretch of 26-win seasons with 18 straight. The Gators were voted to win the Eastern Division with 16 total points, followed by Kentucky with 17 total points. The Gators earned seven firstplace votes while the Wildcats received three. The Tennessee Lady Vols are picked to finish third in the division with 25 points and one first-place vote. South Carolina and Georgia round out the East, respectively. Florida finished 18-2 in SEC action. With a 26-6 overall record and a 17-3 league record, the Wildcats recorded their second consecutive 20-win season since 1993 and a school record in conference wins. For the second straight year, LSU was predicted to win the West as the Tigers received all 10 first-place votes. The Tigers, are the defending Western Division champions as they posted a 13-7 league record and an 18-10 overall record. The Ole Miss Rebels were selected to finish second with 24 points, and the Alabama Crimson Tide is predicted to place third with 25 points. Auburn and Arkansas are picked to finish fourth and fifth, respectively, while the Mississippi State Bulldogs round out the poll in sixth-place. Points were compiled on a 1-2-3-4-5-6 basis for the Western Division and 1-2-3-4-5 for the Eastern Division. Each coach was not allowed to vote for his or her own team and each coach also voted for one team as an overall conference champion. The 2009 season will get underway on Friday, Aug. 28. SEC conference play will begin Sept. 18.
