SHAH ALAM: Special Action Unit officers Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri, 33, and Cpl Sirul Azhar Umar, 37, were sentenced to death yesterday for murdering Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu. Both (pic) were calm as judge Datuk Mohd Zaki Md Yasin took about 10 minutes to read out part of the 280page judgment. Family members and friends in the public gallery sobbed. The verdict came after a 159-day trial. The duo were charged with murdering Altantuya in a jungle clearing on Mukim Bukit Raja between 10pm on Oct 19, 2006 and 1am the next day. Azilah, who wore a blue chequered shirt and a black blazer, was greeted by family and friends, including fiancée Norazila Baharuddin, her mother and key prosecution witness Cpl Rohaniza Roslan. Sirul, who was clad in black, also had a group of family members present to lend moral support. Zaki said after hearing submissions from the defence and the prosecution, he concluded that the defence had essentially been one of blaming each other and denial. “As such the defence has been both irreconcilable and unbelievable, thus they had failed to raise any reasonable doubt in the prosecution’s case which I find to be irresistibly conclusive on account of the physical and circumstantial evidence adduced before me,” he said. The prosecution has therefore proven the case against the first and second accused beyond any reasonable doubt, Zaki said.
