CHAPTER I THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING Introduction The K-12 Basic Education Program aims to provide every Filipino child with the education she/he needs to complete the global context. The goal of the new curriculum is to give Filipino students enough time to master skills and concepts so that they are ready for tertiary education when the time comes. (ICEF Monitor, 2013) Senior High school (SHS) refers to Grades 11 and 12, the last two years of the K-12 program that Department of Education has been implementing since 2012. Students begin to study in SHS the subjects that will introduce them to their preferred career path (Inquirer, 2016). American philosopher John Searle said that Western education has a long tradition of finding knowledge for knowledge’s sake. What he means is that the real aim of education is first, to gives students access to great ideas and second, because of the first reason, education is designed to enable and encourage students to discriminate between what is good and what is bad, what is intelligent what is stupid, and what is true and what is false. In other words, education is not a means, but an end in itself. (Bacarra, 2016). The word “immersion” is done outside the school campus where in students are obliged undergo. challenges as a part of Department of Education (DepEd) Order No. 40 series of 2015 the senior high school (SHS) curriculum existing of 80 hours of hands on experience. The Grade 12 students will undergo the said immersion to expose them to the actual work place setting and to enrich the competencies provided by the school head and Designated Partner Institution. Immersion has two meanings in K to 12. The first meaning refers to a required Senior High School subject in the curriculum. The second meaning refers not to a subject but to a preferred mode of delivery of Technical Vocational subject. Work immersion is one of the best training methods since it is wellorganized and conducted in a place where students will become productive and well-developed. It exposes them to the actual work related to their course. It helps them to learn and understand more the concept they had discussed in class. But what are the issues and problems encountered by students doing work immersion. One of its downside is safety. Since work immersion is done outside the campus, supervision from teachers is necessary. Less or no supervision at all is risky on the student’s side and there are cases that the school is not liable to anything that will happen to the student. This is not just a burden to the parents but to the school as well. In the context of Irineo L. Santiago National High School of Metro Dadiangas, it has been three batches of Senior High School students who experienced the work immersion since it began School Year 2015 -2016. Thus, there is a need to discover about the experiences of Grade 12 students when it comes to work immersion.
