Thematic Unit Description Paper

Name Bobby Maffei Course-Section: Teach 259 - 007

I. Unit Context 1. Write a description of the unit theme detailing what the students will be learning. Students will learn how to conjugate –ar/-er/-ir verbs in my 7th grade Spanish class. By the end of the unit, the students will be able form sentences and better express their thoughts. The theme of this unit will be traveling in a Spanish country. 2. What is the target subject area/class? The target subject area for this thematic unit would be a 7th grade Spanish class. However, the unit may touch on some history/geography since it covers traveling in a Spanish country. 3. How does this unit fit into the whole learning experience of the students? During this unit, students will learn critical lessons that they will need in the future as they progress in their learning of the Spanish language. Skills such as conjugating verbs are crucial to being able to communicate in a Spanish country. 4. What is the setting or situation? Describe the classroom as you see it. Include information on what computers and other equipment are available to the students. The setting of this thematic unit will only take place in my classroom. The equipment that I will need in order to teach my thematic unit includes an overhead projector (or document camera) and a computer that is hooked up to a projector. II. Audience 1. General characteristics: Describe the learners, including the size of the group, their age, interests, experiences, and aptitudes. In my classroom I have 23 7th grade Spanish students. The demographics of my classroom are: • • • •

18 White students 2 Black students 2 Latin students 1 Asian students

Other characteristics of the students in my classroom: •

4 students are considered Borderline Gifted Students



1 student has a Behavioral Disorder

2. Entry competencies: What specific knowledge and assumptions can you make about them? Remember to describe their computer competence. In order to complete this thematic unit, my students will need to know vocabulary words that apply to traveling in a Spanish country. This will help them when it comes time to formulate complete sentences at the end of the unit. III. State Objectives 1. State Goal The goal of this thematic unit is to teach my 7th grade Spanish students how to conjugate –ar/-er/-ir verbs in order to form sentences. This is just one basic step to helping them be able to express their thoughts and feelings in a foreign language. 2. State Objective 1 (a) 7th grade Spanish students (b) will learn how to conjugate –ar ending verbs in the present tense (c) by completing the provided worksheet (d) with 100 % accuracy by the end of class.

3. State Objective 2 (a) 7th grade Spanish students (b) will learn how to conjugate –er/-ir ending verbs in the present tense (c) by completing the provided worksheet (d) with 100% accuracy by the end of class.

4. State Objective 3 (a) 7th grade Spanish students (b) will formulate 10 sentences in the present tense about traveling in a Spanish country (c) using pencil and paper (d) with 100% accuracy by the end of class.

IV. State Methods 1. Instructional Strategy: Identify the instructional strategies you might use to deliver this unit with. Explain how the methods and media will be used to create the learning environment. a. Method(s) for objective 1 Methods for objective 1 will include presentation, tutoring, and demonstration. I will use a computer hooked up to a projector to show the students a clip of Shrek 3 in Spanish and a document camera to show the students a chart of how to conjugate –ar ending verbs in Spanish. Then I will demonstrate to the students how to conjugate the verbs and walk around using tutoring to make sure the students are correctly completing the worksheet. b. Method(s) for objective 2 Methods for objective 2 will include presentation, tutoring, and demonstration. I will use a document camera to show the students a chart of how to conjugate –er/-ir ending verbs in Spanish. Then I will demonstrate to the students how to conjugate these verbs and walk around using tutoring to make sure the students are correctly completing the worksheet. c. Method(s) for objective 3 Methods for objective 3 will include presentation, tutoring, and demonstration. I will use a document camera to review with the students how to conjugate –ar/-er/-ir ending verbs in the present tense. Then I will demonstrate how to form sentences using previously learned vocabulary. Then I will use tutoring to make sure that the students are correctly writing their own sentences about traveling in a Spanish country.
