n the ever changing times, good health is more important than ever. Prevention is the key to improved health. At Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital we offer education and screenings that can put you on the track to a healthier lifestyle. “The biggest thing you can do for your health is pay attention,” said Wellness Center Director Debbie Wagner, RN. To encourage a sustainable change, the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Wellness Center offers free and low-cost options to give you the necessary tools to stay motivated. A Health Risk Appraisal for example, includes a blood draw for lipid levels, cholesterol and glucose, along with a 20-page computerized lifestyle assessment profile. This personal, comprehensive health profile offers you a snapshot of your present risk factors, along with a plan for making changes to positively impact your health. We now also offer a full body Bone Density and Body Fat scan. It has been proven that proper diet and exercise decrease bone loss and reduce the incidence of fractures. Results of the scan are provided by a registered dietitian or registered nurse who will help you learn better dietary strategies for preventing the decrease of bone mineral density. Steps such as eating calcium rich foods and taking calcium supplements has been shown to improve overall bone strength, said Wagner. This screening is recommended for those with a family history of osteoporosis or those who are prone to bone fractures. It is good for women who want to maximize their prevention strategies for bone strength as they age. The Health Risk Assessment includes a blood-draw for coronary risk, cholesterol, glucose and triglyceride

Eating right and regular excercise is important for good health. Getting a Health Risk Appriaisal and a bone scan helps you to know your state of health and can encourage you to stay with a healthy lifestyle.

That includes body fat composition, lung function, flexibility, and “good” and “bad” cholesterol levels. Wagner emphasizes that the appraisal and bone density screen shouldn’t take the place of an annual physical exam with your physician. But it does compliment the information you receive and provide a well-rounded picture of your health. Beyond that, the results may extend your healthy changes into a lifestyle rather than a temporary diet. “I’m not going to tell you a whole lot you don’t already know. Eat right and exercise. But getting an appraisal and/or bone scan and knowing your state of health keeps you motivated to stick with a healthy lifestyle,” Wagner said. The aim of our wellness center is to help you achieve your optimal state of health, whether that means maintaining good health or developing skills to live comfortably with chronic conditions. We offer a wide range of classes for the community on chronic disease management, wellness and nutrition. Posturally it keeps your abdominal muscles and low back muscles in a state of balance. Always allow your torso to lengthen and broaden. Relax your shoulders and always feel the back of your skull pushing upward. Your forehead should rock forward, so if you had a miner’s lamp on your forehead it would be shining on the ground 45 feet in front of you.When walking up stairs or hills, or when picking anything up, keep your torso erect and really stick your buttocks out. Keep your feet parallel.

Why do people do Pilates and how does it help them? In our society while sitting in cars, easy chairs and diminished need to use our bodies for our daily survival the core muscles have a tendency to be underused or strained. This leads to weakening or laxity in some muscle groups and tightening or shortening in others. This causes an imbalance, which in return causes joint compression and instability. To create greater support for the spine will allow for greater ease and efficiency of movement. Pilates is a body conditioning and exercise system focused on flexibility and strength for the total body. It is a series of controlled non- impact movements energizing your body and mind, performed on specifically designed exercise apparatus and floor exercises, supervised by extensively trained teachers. This body conditioning was developed by the legendary physical trainer, Joseph Pilates in the 1920s, and in the 1930s as a means of rehabilitating WWI veterans. What are the benefits of Pilates vs. traditional aerobic exercise? Because Pilates is low impact and you can start where you are physically, anyone can do it without worry of injury, unlike aerobics which can be high impact. It also emphasizes strengthening while stretching, which builds long lean muscles, not big and bulky ones. The word yoga means “union” in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India where yoga originated. Yoga is the union between mind, body, and spirit. What is commonly referred to as “yoga” in today’s world can more accurately be described by another Sanskrit word: “asana,” which refers to the practice of physical postures or poses. Yoga has become popular because the exercises and philosophy generate many health benefits. It can be done at any age and any level of fitness. What kind of people should do this type of exercise? Yoga benefits everyone. It’s well documented scientifically that a lack of exercise and stressful lives contribute significantly to health problems, both mental and physical. But if everyone did 90 minutes of yoga every day (or at least a couple times a week), everyone would be so much more physically and mentally healthy resulting in less stress on the health care system and more enjoyment in life, hopefully reducing the level of social conflict in our society. What are the benefits of Yoga vs. traditional aerobic exercise? Because Bikram Yoga is done in a heated room, it elevates the heart rate and provides the same benefits of traditional aerobic exercise to the cardiovascular system but without the stress that traditional aerobic exercise such as running, jogging, walking, or biking. In addition, with yoga, you lengthen your muscles where as with many other exercises, you shorten and tighten them. Longer muscles lead to increased flexibility and less injury.
