THE SELF AS COGNITVE CONSTRUCT

WHO DO YOU THINK I AM BASED ON WHAT YOU SEE ME DO OR HEAR ME SAY?

I AM WHO I AM

IF YOU ARE WHO YOU ARE, THEN WHO ARE YOU THAT MAKES WHO YOU ARE?

SELF OF PERSONAL IDENTITY AND OF WHO WE ARE AS INDIVIDUALS

WILLIAM JAMES WAS ONE OF THE EARLIEST PSYCHOLOGIST TO STUDY THE SELF AND CONCEPTUALIZED THE SELF AS HAVING TWO ASPECTS – THE “I” AND THE “ME”

WILLIAM JAMES WAS ONE OF THE EARLIEST PSYCHOLOGIST TO STUDY THE SELF AND CONCEPTUALIZED THE SELF AS HAVING TWO ASPECTS – THE “I” AND THE “ME”

CARL ROGERʻS THEORY OF PERSONALITY I – AS THE ONE WHO ACTS AND DECIDES ME – WHAT YOU THINK OR FEEL ABOUT YOURSELF.

THEORIES GENERALLY SEE THE SELF AND IDENTITY AS MENTAL CONSTRUCT

THE MOST INFLUENTIAL IS SIGMUND FREUD HE SAW THE SELF, ITS MENTAL PROCESSES AND ONE BEHAVIOR AS THE RESULTS OF THE INTERACTION BETWEEN THE ID, THE EGO AND SUPEREGO.

ID - IS THE DISORGANIZED PART OF THE

PERSONALITY STRUCTURE THAT CONTAINS A HUMAN'S BASIC, INSTINCTUAL DRIVES. ID IS THE ONLY COMPONENT OF PERSONALITY THAT IS PRESENT FROM BIRTH. IT IS THE SOURCE OF OUR BODILY NEEDS, WANTS, DESIRES, AND IMPULSES, PARTICULARLY OUR SEXUAL AND AGGRESSIVE DRIVES. THE ID CONTAINS THE LIBIDO, WHICH IS THE PRIMARY SOURCE OF INSTINCTUAL FORCE THAT IS UNRESPONSIVE TO THE DEMANDS OF REALITY.

EGO -IT SEEKS TO PLEASE THE ID'S DRIVE IN REALISTIC

WAYS THAT WILL BENEFIT IN THE LONG TERM RATHER THAN BRING GRIEF. AT THE SAME TIME, FREUD CONCEDES THAT AS THE EGO "ATTEMPTS TO MEDIATE BETWEEN ID AND REALITY, IT IS OFTEN OBLIGED TO CLOAK THE [UNCONSCIOUS] COMMANDS OF THE ID WITH ITS OWN PRECONSCIOUS RATIONALIZATIONS, TO CONCEAL THE ID'S CONFLICTS WITH REALITY, TO PROFESS...TO BE TAKING NOTICE OF REALITY EVEN WHEN THE ID HAS REMAINED RIGID AND UNYIELDING.

SUPER EGO REFLECTS THE INTERNALIZATION OF CULTURAL RULES, MAINLY TAUGHT BY PARENTS APPLYING THEIR GUIDANCE AND INFLUENCE. FREUD DEVELOPED HIS CONCEPT OF THE SUPER-EGO FROM AN EARLIER COMBINATION OF THE EGO IDEAL AND THE "SPECIAL PSYCHICAL AGENCY WHICH PERFORMS THE TASK OF SEEING THAT NARCISSISTIC SATISFACTION FROM THE EGO IDEAL IS ENSURED...WHAT WE CALL OUR 'CONSCIENCE'.

UNDER THEORY OF SYMBOLIC INTERACTIONISM, MEAD(1934) ARGUED THAT THE SELF IS CREATED AND DEVELOPED THROUGH HUMAN INERACTION

THREE REASONS WHY SELF AND IDENTITY ARE SOCIAL PRODUCTS

1. WE DO NOT CREATE OURSELVES OUT OF NOTHING. 2. WHETHER WE LIKE TO ADMIT IT OR NOT, WE ACTUALLY NEED OTHERS TO AFFIRM AND REINFORCE WHO WE THINK WE ARE. 3. WHAT WE THINK IMPORTANT TO US MAY ALSO HAVE BEEN INFLUENCED BY WHAT IS IMPORTANT IN OUR SCIAL OR HISTORICAL CONTEXT.

SELF-AWARENESS ALSO PRESENTS US WITH THE LEAST THREE OTHER SELF-SCHEMA. 1. ACTUAL - WHO YOU ARE AT THE MOMENT 2. IDEAL - WHO YOU LIKE TO BE 3. OUGHT - WHO YOU THINK YOU SHOULD BE.

OUR GROUP IDENTITY AND SELF AWARENESS ALSO HAS A GREAT IMPACT ON OUR SELF-ESTEEM, ONE OF THE COMMON CONCEPTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE SELF.

SOCIAL COMPARISON ALSO ENTALS WHAT US CALLED SELFEVALUATION MAINTENANCE THEORY WHICH STATES THAT WE CAN FEEL THREATENED WHEN SOMEONE OUT-PERFORMS US ESPECIALLY IF THAT PERSON CLOSE TO US.

THE SELF IN WESTERN AND EASTERN THOUGHTS

CONFUCIANISM – CAN BE SEEN AS A CODE OF ETHICAL CONDUCT OF HOW ONE SHOULD PROPERLY ACT ACCORDING TO THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHER PEOPLE.

SELF-CULTIVATION IS SEEN AS THE ULTIMATE PURPOSE OF LIFE BUT THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A CHUN-TZU, A MAN OF VIRTUE OR NOBLE CHARACTER, IS STILL EMBEDDED IN HIS SOCIAL RELATIONSHIP. SUBDUED SELF – WHEREIN PERSONAL NEEDS ARE REPRESSED FOR THE GOOD OF MANY, MAKING CONFUCIAN SOCIETY ALSO HIERARCHAL FOR THE PURPOSE OF MAINTAINING ORDER AND BALANCE IN SOCIETY.

TAOISM- IS LIVING IN THE WAY OF TAO OR THE UNIVERSE. THE SELF IS SELFLESSNESS BUT THIS IS NOT FORGETTING ABOUT THE SELF, IT IS LIVING A BALANCED LIFE WITH SOCIEY AND NATURE, BEING OPEN AND ACCEPTING THE CHANGE, THINKING ABOUT EQUALITY. IN THIS WAY, YOU WILL BE ABLE TO ACT SPONTANEOUSLY BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT BE RESTRICTED BY SOME LEGALISTIC STANDARDS BUT BECAUSE YOU ARE IN HARMONY WITH EVERYTHING.

BUDDHISM THE SELF IS SEEN AS AN ILLUSION, BORN OUT OF IGNORANCE , OF TRYING TO HOLD AND CONTROL THINGS OR HUMAN CENTERED NEEDS. THE SELF IS ALSO THE SOURCE OF THESE SUFFERINGS
