The German government - as sole owner of the national railroad company - is being asked to recognise as a debt the train fares extorted from Jews for transporting them to Nazi camps. In dollars of today, it's reckoned the German Reichsbahn raked in an incredible 600 million dollars or more for transporting Jews to Auschwitz and other camps. The figure emerges from a detailed study - the first ever conducted - into how German rail benefited financially from the Nazis' ethnic cleansing. The Reichsbahn, which kept detailed records, charged two Pfennigs - eighteen US cents in today's money' - per passenger per kilometer. Deportees were forced to buy their own tickets at designated stations. The SS invoiced Jewish organisations for those who couldn't pay their fare.
