Stephanie, the girl we all know and love. They study the Russian Language at the University. We had an opportunity to communicate with the native English speakers face to face! It doesn't happen very often so it was quite an event for us. First we talked about schools and American system of education in general. Jeremy gave us a lot of information. It was especially Important note: The section of Happy Birthday is under construction!interesting for us because our future profession is directly connected with school. So let’s clear up some differences between the Russian If you see a mistake here education system and the American one in details. As we knew, what or we missed smb’s birthday we call "kindergarten" is called "preschool" in America. It’s for children aged 2-4. The Kindergarten is equal to the first grade in Please contact us. Public, Private or Home schools. Of course Private school is the most expensive one. Half of a pair is called "a period". It’s usually 45 min. Every school has its own location which is called campus. The child cannot leave the campus even during the break and must stay at the territory of school. There’s a café in every school with a fine menu and a student can buy a dinner to his taste- fast food or healthy food which is vegetable salads or smth like that. Krista told us about extra curricula activities. When she was a bit younger she went to Public school and was one of the best cheerleaders. To be involved in the extra curricula activities is very important and prestigious. It’ll give the advantages over the students who didn’t go in any kind of activities. It can be well seen when you apply for the University - they will choose an active student with different creative skills even if his/her results are lower than the results of a student who was passive in his school years. Stephanie continued to speak about different kinds of establishments of higher education. The schedule is flexible and this is the preeminence of the American students. They can combine studying and working at the same time which is the problem for a usual student in Russia. The books and other materials are very expensive in the USA that’s why after each year the students sell out their books to the younger ones, of course with the reduced prices. Our lesson passed very fast and we got much very interesting information and unforgettable fellowship with the Americans. Group 304 and its tutor Slepova N.B. are very thankful to Jeremy, Krista and Stephanie for the fine lesson! To be continued… Don’t skip the next issue of the Elf - there can be the interviews with Jeremy or Krista or Stephanie…be in stream!

MORE OPINIONS..... I think that our Students’ Spring Concert was at least not worse than that of all other faculties. I liked almost all the performances, especially the dances Stylyagi and Tango and the song All That Jazz. In comparison with the singers performing at the final concert, Kira Kulkova was the best of the best. Besides, our scandalous rapper Rustam was also great. The English Language Faculty rules! We are the best! (Prikazchikova N., Group 504) MORE PHOTOS

The “Guess the Photo” Winner!

By Slepova N.B.

It is Irina Alpatova from group 304 who guessed and was chosen by luck (as a result of a lottery) that a little girl in the photo was Oksana Vladimirovna Kiseleva. She recognized her pretty smile. She’s got a prize for her participating and winning. Dear students! Don’t miss the next opportunity to guess a person. Send your answers to our e-mail or give directly to your teachers.

New Task!:

students showed us different kinds of dancing. For example, Brazilian, Ukrainian dances, a Gypsy dance, tango. I wish the students good luck and I wish them to develop their skills next year. (Yusupova R, Group 104) * … the performance was really great! Most of all I liked the dancing of Marina and Yaroslav, Dasha and the blanket’s acting, that was really funny. Besides, I enjoyed the presentation at the end of the performance. It’s a good idea to show the rehearsals and that it’s not everyone’s talent – to dance. Also, it was a nice idea to make a big hand with coloured imprints of smaller hands … (Konina S., Group 104) * … I liked the concert because it was very interesting. Our students were remarkable. Especially, I liked the first part of the performance, though it was sad. Each person had to make a choice and that’s really difficult … (Rebrushkina I., Group 104) * … it was very nice! Our students presented an interesting concert. Sometimes there were the mistakes but it’s not so important. To my mind, the first part was really exciting and mysterious. The students made the most of their roles. The second part was different, but also great. The dance “Carnival” was brilliant, the item with the blanket was so funny. I’d like to say “Thank you” to the students for the performance. (Shestakova L., Group 104) * … the show was cool. I liked it. The first part was wonderful and mysterious. “You have to make a choice” – this is the main idea… (Hushkina K, Group 104) * This “Students’ Spring” was not so good. Of course, the idea of the whole concert was interesting and unusual, but, to our mind, it was not developed in a proper way. Besides, there was too much nakedness. The best items were Rustam’s singing, the blanket’s acting, Vika’s song, and - the First part was excellent!!! (Elizarova T., Kanaeva V., Group 304)

by Elena Duvalkina and Diana Purtsakina, group 304

… I liked it. It was very nice. Especially, I liked the first part. You know, youth’s changing is very actual nowadays. It’s really difficult to change something. I am a young person and this problem is very important for me. speaking about the second part, I think it was a wonderful performance. Our

The Freshest, Unexpected, News About Our Faculty!

by Vardanyan L.V.

Are we supposed to teach only teachers? You may think ‘YES’, but we tell you ‘NO’. Next year our students will have an opportunity to get a new qualification – “Translator / Interpreter”! It should be noted that now we have a licence which confirms that we have the right to teach in this field. Moreover, this qualification will be fixed in students’ Higher Education Diplomas. It is really a great success of our faculty and we hope not to stop at this point! ______________________________________________________

EASTER

This is a teacher of the English Language Chair. During her student years she was very active. Here's one case which happened to her in a kolkhoz. The man who led a tractor needed the assistant. Our brave teacher was the volunteer but of course she didn't expect him to abandon her in the tractor alone!!! So our teacher had nothing to do but to submit the destiny and she decided to do her best. She drove forward and reached the field. Everybody was shocked by her brevity and she got the applauses from her fellow students. It was her unforgettable experience! Besides she has many talents. During her student years she was a constant participant of the Students' Spring Festival. She has a nice voice and plays the guitar. Nowadays she still is not impersonal and takes an active part in the life f our faculty.

This year Easter is on the 19th of April. It's the holiest and the lightest day for the Christianity all over the world. Every country has its own traditions and customs but they all unified celebrating and rejoicing this day! Easter is a wonderful opportunity to visit the church morning act of worship and then to celebrate this holiday at home with your family. But you must be well prepared for it! Further you may see some simple examples of Easter decorations.

Usually we are too busy to spend hours and hours decorating the house. For decorations you will need small ornaments . These can be small crystals, candies and cookies or the traditional for this time Easter eggs. They are wonderful Easter decorations and you can

spread them around the house. On the table, near the door or on the windows they will create a holiday atmosphere. Also very popular are the Easter trees. Don’t forget to buy the bright colored balloons and place them all around. They will give a fresh look to the rooms. For the table buy suitable centerpiece. It can be a plate nicely decorated with colored Easter eggs and flowers or a big bouquet with fresh spring flowers. Do you know the traditional flowers for Easter? They are lilies! According to many people lilies are typical Easter flowers because of their significance and symbolism. These beautiful flowers are the delicate embodiment of renewed life, purity and hope. If you have chosen these flowers for the Easter holiday as a gift to the people you love or just want to decorate your house with them, you should know that you can grow them in pots in your home or plant them in your garden. Place them near the windows and you can enjoy their beauty for a long time. Also prepare the postcards for your friends! Now let's ask some students to share their experience in celebrating this day! Diana Purtsakina, 304: Our family celebrated Easter with our relatives. In the morning we cooked Easter dishes and decorated the eggs and in the middle of the day we went to our relatives and congratulated each other on this bright day. Irina Alpatova, 304: I like to celebrate Easter with my friendly family. A day before we color the eggs, bake pies and sponge cakes. In the morning we meet a lot of children with the words:"Christ is risen!!!" and we answer them giving colored eggs and sweets. I enjoy the children faces when they get a new decorated egg. In the afternoon our family visits our granny and we have a very delicious dinner. Also she bakes the Easter cakes and cooks the paskha. I like this holiday! Yuliya Shireeva,304: When I was a child early in the morning I always went to collect eggs with my friends . It was very funny and interesting. Later at home I counted them and called my friends to tell how many eggs I had collected and asked them about their success. Then we had a festal family breakfast. Now my brother supplies us with eggs! So I think we heard enough about this holiday and can't wait till it comes!!! I wish everybody to celebrate this day in peace, love and joy. Good luck with your decorations!!! __________________________________________________

faculty (more than 60 people) had the practice in schools of our town from 2.02.09 to 28.03.09. For eight weeks we were expected to show what we had been taught since the first course. This practice was the active one, i.e. we had to act as English and German teachers. As for me I liked these 8 weeks, but what about others? I decided to interview my group mate Sinchurina Ksenia who was in School 24.

K: Yes, especially during my first lesson. I supposed that the pupils would behave awfully, but my expectations didn’t come true, fortunately. The whole lesson my hands were trembling, my head was aching. I was afraid that I would forget something. But as for the first lesson it was quite well done. Then this fear of teaching went away and I felt confident.

Friendship… All of you know this word and what it means. But do you know the proverbs about friendship? Worried about anything? Can't find a definite answer to your questions? Have a certain point of view? Want to share your ideas with others? Then - greet a new column in your newspaper -"The Debating Club". Let's communicate and discuss any theme together and reveal the truth. Here is the first subject to discuss and the first point of view written by the 5th-year student of the German Department Kitaikina Tatyana, Group 502. "NOWADAYS PEOPLE KNOW THE PRICE OF EVERYTHING AND THE VALUE OF NOTHING" (Oscar Wilde) I agree with this statement. Nowadays money plays an important role in our life. We can buy not only some things (e.g., clothes, furniture, etc.) but also such human values as health, love, respect. People think that they can buy almost everything in life. Everybody knows the price of visiting a doctor, but nobody knows the value of health. A man knows the price of some things for his wife, but he doesn't know the value of love. So, I would like to say that nowadays the young generation thinks only about money and the price of things, but they know the value of nothing. ---------------------------If you agree or disagree, if you have another point of view - WRITE!
