GERMAN QUARTETS
EDITOR'S NOTES
It is with great pride that Southern Music Company and The Complete Homist
present this wonderful collection of 88 German hom quartets. Originally edited by Heinz Liebert and published by Hofmeister of Leipzig, it includes hunting tunes, waltzes, lieder, opera excerpts, folk songs, hymns,Christrnas pieces, and marches. The fourth hom part is old notation bass clef. In all German titles that use the character "B", it is pronouced like, and may be interchanged with, the two letters "ss". Following is a glossary of German terms used in this edition: ausdrucksvoll: expressive besinnlich: reflective, contemplative bewegt: moved, rather fast breit: broad drangen: hurry, urge forward duster: melancholy, gloomy, somber etwas: somewhat feierlich: solemn, ceremonious frei: free fiisch: fresh, brisk, lively frohlich: merry, cheerful, geheimnisvoll: mysterious, mystical gemutlich: genial, easy-going geschwind: quick, fast getragen: sustained, slow, measured innig: heartfelt, sincere kraftig: strong, robust, powerful r...andler: a country dance in 3/4 time, a slow waltz langsam: slow langsamer: slower March, 1988 Houston, Texas
lebhaft: lively lebhafter: livelier leicht: lightly, easily lustig: jolly, rollicking, cheerful majesratisch: majestic, awe-inspiring Marsch: march massig: moderately munter: lively, brisk offen: open ruhig: quiet, calm ruhiger: quieter, calmer sanft: soft, gentle schmettemd: blared out, brassy schnell: quick, fast schneller: qUicker, faster sehr: very verklingen: die away zart: tender ziemlich: rather
Thomas Bacon
For the second edition, a number of corrections were made, the order of several selections was changed in order to make more favorable page turns, and an alternative version of the fourth hom part (in treble clef) has been created. Full scores are now available to each of the 88 Quartets. March, 1994 San Antonio, Texas
