Animals are grown all over the world to make leather. Some major places that they are grown are the U.S., China, and Russia.

However, many people will not buy fur because they think it is cruel to kill animals for this reason, but they will still buy leather. We get it from cattle who are slaughtered for meat, dairy cows who are no longer in use, or calves (their soft skin is valuable). Some other animals include sheep, lambs, goats, pigs, alligators, and crocodiles.

Leather is harvested usually when an animal is slaughtered for meat. There are three stages when processing leather. The stages are preparatory stages, tanning, and crusting.
