TENSES OF THE VERB  Present

tense  Future tense  Past tense  Progressive tense  Simple tense





Tens Tense is the attribute of a verb which shows the e time of the action , condition or state of being in relation to the time of speaking or writing. Verbs have forms of tense to indicate present , past or future time. The principal parts of a verb used to form tense are: *The simple form (infinitive form without you)borrow , take. *The s-form- borrows , took. *The present participle-borrowing , taking. *The past participle-borrowed taken.

There are six tenses by means of which the time of the action , state or being expressed by the verb is indicated. Three of these are primary namely: (1)The Present , (2)The Past & (3)The Future. There are also three perfect tenses , These are: 1.The present perfect tense 2.The past perfect tense 3.The future perfect tense

Present This form of theTense verb is used to express the following: 1.) Habitual action Ø Action that is done or occurs regularly . The regularity is indicated by the word: always, often, frequently, everyday, twice a month etc.

EXAMPLE: I visit the Blessed Sacrament every morning.

2.)Permanent Condition ØState of being that will not change. EXAMPLE: I am a girl.

3.) Present Fact Øa condition that is true only at the moment, it may no longer be true later on. EXAMPLE: Zyrine Likes ribbons on her hair.

4.) General Truth ØSomething that it is true for most but not for all. (there are exceptions) EXAMPLE: Filipino Girls are feminine & sweet.

5.)Simple Futurity ØThe simple present tense maybe used to express the future only if the future action has been planned. EXAMPLE: We begin our vacation in two weeks.

6.) Historical present ØUse of the present tense to narrate a past event for more vividness. EXAMPLE: In “Wedding Dance” Awiyao visits Lumnay & tries to persuade her to join the dancers but she refuses. NOTE: Actions/conditions that do not fall into any of those given above should not use the ordinary present tense.

Future This verb form is made up of will or & Tense the base or infinitive form of the verb. EXAMPLES: will turn shall plant The ordinary future tense indicates an action to be done at a definite time in the future as expressed by tomorrow, in three weeks, next month, when I visit you again etc. EXAMPLE: I will call you up when I reach home. Our teachers will computer our grades soon.

Past This tense is used to indicate action Tense to be done at a definite time in the

past. Whenever words indicate a definite time in the past such as. Yesterday, last night, three days ago, in 1988 etc., the verb should be in the ordinary past tense. EXAMPLES: In listened to a symposium on education for values yesterday. Two days ago I led the morning prayers before the flag ceremony.

Progressive Ø The progressiveTense tenses show action going on or continuing over a space of a time

consequently , because the action they express is not completed. Ø They are sometimes referred to as the imperfect tenses. The different forms are as follows: Past progressive , Present progressive , Future progressive , Past perfect progressive , present perfect progressive & Future perfect progressive.

Simple Tense Essential information:

Ø Tense indicates the time of the action , state or being expressed by the verb. Ø The first sin against the correct use of the tenses or the temporal point of view is a careless shift of tenses within a sentence or in a composition .It is important that proper tense sequence be preserved between a verb in the main clause and a verb in the subordinate clause. Example: when I was in Nueva Viscaya I was very happy.
