Materials: For Testing: Graduated Cylinder with the measurements up to 100 (1) Timer (1) Water (150) Thermometer, metal (1) Microwave Glass measuring cup(1) Oven mitt (1 or 2)

Use hot pads or oven mitts to handle hot objects. 5. Do not reach over a hot burner. 6. Do not leave the experiment unattended. 7. Clean up spills immediately. 8. Report any injuries to your Learning Coach or adult supervisor immediately. Introduction: This lab was conducted to determine the temperature changes between two different volumes of water also known as specific heat capacity. This lab will also determine the temperature or energy. The water being tested will be timed in 5 second increments from the beginning point of 0 seconds. The sizes that are being tested are 50 mL and 100 mL beakers. The volume will be different in the test, however, the mass will be the same in this experiment because the items being tested are both the same temperature then heated in the microwave a thermal equilibrium which should create the thermal equilibrium . Hypothesis: The larger volume of water will not get as hot as the smaller volume of water because there is more water for the heat to disperse through.
Procedure: 1. Fill the cylinder with 50ml water from the kitchen faucet. 2. Move the water into a microwave safe measuring cup. 3. Place the microwave safe measuring cup in the microwave and heat on HIGH for 30 seconds. 4. CAREFULLY remove the measuring cup from the microwave and measure the temperature. Record this as temperature at time 0 seconds.
5. Continue to measure the temperature every 5 seconds and record it in the table 6. Repeat steps 1 – 4 using the 100ml of water in the measuring cup. Record the data in the second column of the table. Data: Time 0 seconds

Observations: 1. The 50 ml and the 100ml had varying degree decreases. 2. 100 ml measuring cup had much higher temperatures. 3. Hard water formed on the thermometer when I put the thermometer into the 100ml water after it was heated 4. Water dissipated from both of the amounts of water.
5. The temperature of the thermometer before the water was 75 degrees and after putting it in the water it was 80 degrees. Data Analysis 250

Conclusion: The difference in temperature between two different volumes of water. The hypothesis was that the larger volume of water would not get as hot as the smaller volume of water. The hypothesis was incorrect. The larger volume of water reached a higher temperature. If the experiment was done again the changes I would make would be trying to get a more precise reading.
