Experts, manufacturers and art directors are invited to answer your questions. LAUSD approved vendors will give demonstrations of their products and services. Industry professionals will be invited to be guest speakers, or to serve as presenters in hands-on training in technical theatre skills. In addition, teachers with advanced skills in technical theatre will host and model their practice at the workshops.

Award-winning teaching artists Debbie Devine and Jay McAdams have been creating rejuvenating professional development workshops for educators for more than two decades. Thousands of teachers nationwide have experienced their Teaching As A Performing Art workshops.

Incorporating Career & Technical Education (CTE) concepts, teachers will integrate aesthetic values through the use of technology. This will help teachers to build programs and develop articulated feeder school groups. As well, students of diverse learning abilities and styles will benefit and become technical theatre mentors. Many will be able to earn servicelearning credits by offering their skills to the community. Small learning communities with a visual & performing arts focus in are encouraged to attend.

Based in New York City, Scott C. Parker and Sonny Sonnenfeld bring their all day Stage Lighting Super Saturday seminar to Los Angeles for the first time. The event will take place on February 7th 2009 at West Adams Prep. Industry specialists will demonstrate: stage lighting, lighting fixtures, colors & scrollers, gobo’s & rotators, projections and effects, consoles, programming, wireless DMX, maintenance, automated lights and more. expanding your knowledge and skills We invite you to come and explore the possibilities in technical theatre. The goal is to engage with professionals who can train visual and performing arts educators with hands on skills development in planning, designing, budgeting, practical applications and instructional models. Participants are encouraged to go back to their schools and develop projects with their students to be presented at any one of the six Saturday workshops.

salary point opportunity Participants will be eligible to earn up to three salary points by attending all scheduled Saturday workshops and the completion of all required homework. The homework can include a combination of: written lesson plans or units of study; a comprehensive action plan for technical theatre; facilitation of workshops; attendance at Stage Lighting Super Saturday; and presentations of student works in progress. One salary point can be earned for attending two Saturday workshops and completion of assigned homework. If teachers prefer, they can be paid training rate (approx. $27.50 p/hr) through their own school’s SB1131 funds in lieu of credit. register Please download the registration form at http://techtheatrereg.my-ecoach.com Lunch is not provided. Please email your form to the address indicated on the registration form. There is a cap of sixty-five participants per Saturday. You will be contacted to confirm.

Exhibits can include media presentations, light plots, scenic constructions, props, costumes, flow charts, models, tool use demonstrations, as well as portfolio presentations. All levels of technical expertise are appreciated. Creating dialogue between novices and experts with a common emphasis on safety and innovation is the goal.

Selected high school teachers will be invited to enroll their students in a nationwide pilot of the Technical Theatre HS Exit Exam. The test is the first of its kind developed by the New York City Dept. of Ed. in collaboration with the National Occupational Competency Testing Institute (NOCTI). It involves a multiple choice test and optional practical performance tasks in Stage Management, Lighting & Sound, Costuming, Hair & Make Design, Running Crews, and stage design related Carpentry. The target date for the test is May 2nd 2009.
