Title Pyramids Around the World
Description of Activity Students will learn about pyramids (through direct instruction and videos) and create Glogs and Wordles about them.
Suggested grade level Intermediate; 6th grade
Pennsylvania Subject Area Standards 8.4.6.B - Identify and explain important documents, material artifacts and historic sites in world history.
NETS Standards NETS 1B - Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. Students create original works as a means of personal or group expression. NETS 3C - Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. Students evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks. NETS 5A&B - Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior. Students advocate and practice safe, legal, and responsible use of information and technology and exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration, learning, and productivity. Learning objectives Students will be able to: Distinguish between “regular” pyramids and step pyramids Compare and contrast pyramids from around the world Construct a Glogster that best shows their knowledge of pyramids Define key words in the lesson Construct a Wordle that incorporates all vocabulary words (pyramid, step pyramid, Great Pyramid, Khufu, grave robbers, Egyptians, Aztecs, Indians)
TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATED CLASSROOM LESSON Materials required Laptop (Video: http://player.discoveryeducation.com/index.cfm?guidAssetId=81E599D4-DA724F4B-B023-C2FA29CAC16F&blnFromSearch=1&productcode=US), LCD Projector, 30 PCs, MS Word, Journals, Headphones
Approximate number of class periods and length Students have already been instructed how to use Wordle and Glogster, they are proficient in their use. The Video will take approximately 1 to 2 classes and the Glogster will probably take about the same. The Wordle should only take a half class period as will the definition page. Total time should be about a week.
Classroom management strategies: Lesson is for a full class of 30 students and it will be done in the classroom and computer lab.
Warm up Students are already proficient in Wordle and Glogster. Students will read an article about the countries that pyramids are found and journal write five facts from the article. Monday – Egypt (http://www.nationalgeographic.com/pyramids/pyramids.html) Tuesday – Aztec (http://www.aztec-history.net/aztec_pyramids) Wednesday – European (http://www.world-pyramids.com/europe.html) Thursday – China (http://web.utanet.at/mahain/Pyramids_in_China.htm) Friday – Peru (http://www.crystalinks.com/pyramidperu.html)
Activities/ Procedures Monday – Students will watch the video from Discovery Education; “Inside the Pyramids” (http://player.discoveryeducation.com/index.cfm?guidAssetId=81E599D4-DA72-4F4B-B023C2FA29CAC16F&blnFromSearch=1&productcode=US) on the LCD projector in the classroom. Tuesday – Students will finish watching the video on the LCD projector When the video is finished, the students will go to the computer lab Students will create a Wordle on the computer (www.wordle.net) using the vocabulary Words (pyramid, step pyramid, Great Pyramid, Khufu, grave robbers, Egyptians, Aztecs, Incas, Chinese, Snefru) Students will type the vocabulary words and definitions into MS Word and print their results for a grade Wednesday to Friday – Students will meet in the computer lab Students will create a Glogster (www.glogster.com) using their knowledge of pyramids from around the world. The Glog will contain pictures, videos, facts, quotes, and wav files. Students will have until the end of the day on Friday to complete this assignment
TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATED CLASSROOM LESSON Assessment strategies Wordle assignment is graded based on the inclusion of all of the Vocabulary Words (total of 100 points, 10 points per word) Definition document will be graded on a similar scale (total of 100 points, 3 points per word and 7 points per definition) Glogster will be graded on the following rubric: (http://rubistar.4teachers.org/index.php?screen=ShowRubric&rubric_id=1767631)

Back-up plan: (if the technology fails!) Teacher will have large pieces of paper for students to draw and color the pyramids and their internal workings using the printed Warm-Up sheets and the textbook.
Branching out Students that are above grade level will be able to create more glogs if necessary for extra credit. Students that are below grade level will have 2 extra days to complete the assignment with the special education teacher
