Objectives: At the end of the discussion, the students are able to: 2. explain what expository method is; 3. show appreciation of the expository method by citing how indispensable it is in the teaching – learning process; and 4. create their own lesson plan using the expository method.

What do you mean by EXPOSITION? Is EXPLAINING and INTERPRETING It is a comprehensive description and explanation of

a theory.

EXPOSITORY METHOD It is a kind of method that interprets or explains a

comprehensive topic or subject matter.

Uses of EXPOSITORY METHOD 1. When relevant information is needed to make the class understand a part in the lesson. 2. When pupils / students do not have the information, and time can be saved by the teacher telling it.

Uses of EXPOSITORY METHOD 3. When an idea or principle can be learned only by explanation. 4. Where the use of induction will take too much time to justify its use or wherever the difficulties of its use outweigh its value.

Steps of conducting the EXPOSITORY METHOD Approach. The proper mind-set may be established by recalling past experiences related to the present lesson. The points to be explained must be placed before the class.

Steps of conducting the EXPOSITORY METHOD Presentation. While explaining, it might be well for the teacher to make use of the following principles:

PRESENTATION  Relate the new to the past experiences.  Teacher and class should have the same view

point regarding what is to be explained  Exposition means not only explaining but also interpreting.  Materials should be organized so as to permit thinking.  To make the explanation clear and effective, devices may be used such as:

PRESENTATION 1. Analogies and stories 2. Illustrations 3. Models 4. Diagrams 5. Demonstrations 6. Outlines and Summaries to set facts in proper

relationship.

Steps of conducting the EXPOSITORY METHOD Application. This step will show whether the pupils / students understands the explanation or not. It may be given in the form of a test, creative work or another activity.

Conditions for Effective Exposition 1. The teacher’s thorough understanding of the thing

to be explained. 2. The teacher’s comprehension of the students’ ability to understand the explanation. 3. The use of language and illustrations within the students’ experiences and understanding.
