Methane
General Other names
Marsh gas
Molecular formula
CH4
Methane is a significant and plentiful fuel which is the principal component of natural gas. Burning one molecule of methane in the presence of oxygen releases one molecule of CO2 (carbon dioxide) and two molecules of H2O:
CH4 + 2O2 → CO2 + 2H2O Methane's relative abundance and clean burning process makes it a very attractive fuel. However, because it is a gas (at normal temperature and pressure) and not a liquid or solid, methane is difficult to transport from the areas that produce it to the areas that consume it. Converting methane to derivatives that are more easily transported, such as methanol, is an active area of research. Certain microorganisms can effect this selective oxidation using enzymes called methane monooxygenases.
Preparation of Methane Gas PURPOSE To prepare methane gas from sodium acetate EQUIPMENT large test tube one-hole stopper ring stand clamp gas collecting tube bent delivery tube match MATERIALS soda-lime (NaOH +CaO) sodium acetate (CH3COONa) PROCEDURE 1. Take 5g of powdered sodium acetate and 15g of soda-lime. 2. Mix them in a large test tube. 3. Set up the following apparatus. 4. Heat the flask strongly. 5. Match the end of the test tube and observe. Be careful that no gas is coming from the one-hole stopper. CH3COOH & limewater Methane gas
