TALENT SHOW Thursday, March 12 7:00 PM San Mateo Performing Arts Center benefitting

Vitamin Angels All proceeds from tonight’s show will benefit Vitamin Angels, based in Santa Barbara, CA.

Did you know...

Vitamin Angels provides micronutrient supplements and antiparasitics to: indigenous healthcare providers and international relief efforts, including the Southeast Asian Tsunami, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and the 2005 earthquake in Pakistan.

- Just $1 provides sufficient funding to preserve the sight of a child - More than 1 billion people live on less than $1 per day

Vitamin Angels creates innovative distribution models and unique partnerships to address chronic malnutrition and the resulting morbidity and mortality due to vitamin deficiencies in children (especially under the age of 5) in the developing world and in our own country. By bringing together the people with the greatest resources with the children with the greatest need but the fewest resources, Vitamin Angels works to reduce deficiency diseases and save children’s lives.

- One-third of all child and maternal deaths on the planet every year are due to chronic malnutrition

Vitamins are the most effective, lowest cost and quickest way to improve global health.

Vitamin Angels is committed to eliminating childhood blindness due to Vitamin A Deficiency (VAD) on the planet by the year 2020. In its first year, Operation 20/20 will reach 4.5 million children to prevent VAD childhood blindness.  In addition to the vitamin A, all the children will receive de-worming medicine to improve the absorption of the vitamin A and help combat intestinal parasites. Vitamin A is critical for vision, bone growth and normal bodily development, and plays an active role in supporting a child's immune system. Today, half of the children who go blind from Vitamin A Deficiency die each year from opportunistic infections and otherwise non-lifethreatening illnesses. Vitamin Angels’ global initiative will focus specifically on providing basic vitamin A nutritional supplements to the tens of millions of children, living in extreme poverty, that are at risk of going blind or dying due to Vitamin A deficiency.

HRU holds meetings every Wednesday at lunch in Ms. Stanley’s classroom. Our meetings usually include event planning, discussions, and presentations. We find human rights violations happening in the world and educate those who attend our meetings about what they can do to help. Our efforts to right these injustices range from holding a car wash to participating in an online Free Rice Competition (www.freerice.com), as well as organizing fundraisers such as tonight’s benefit talent show. We thank you for your charitable donation and hope you enjoy tonight's performances.

The SMHS Talent Show was made possible by many volunteers and performers who have put in countless hours of work and rehearsal. This show is the first of its kind in a long time, and we hope to continue this tradition for years to come. Your contribution tonight is greatly appreciated; thank you for not only supporting our students, but also helping save the lives of children all over the world. - Paula Weiss, Talent Show Coordinator
