New Media - Characteristics 

Content is diverse  one of the most widely touted benefit is ability to promote diversity.  diversity claim is subjective and hard to verify.



Content is correlated with channels  Relatively specialised material for subsets of the mass audience.  Organisation of content by types into channels eg. news, sports etc..

New Media - Characteristics 

Channels Are Differentially Available  Technological, economic & regulatory factors.  Expect: 1. increasingly diverse programming, 2. material organized in channels specialising in relatively homogeneous form of content, 3. content to be available to only some members of the audience.

Meeting Current Needs Theory has neglected the power of the Medium - 2-way communication flow - Content producer → Medium
