We have a lot to be proud of. In the last six months our union has made important gains. •
More workers choosing SWU—Since Dec. 1 of last year, another 1,800 workers at another 40 worksites have joined our union. That brings the total to more than 18,000 workers at Compass, Sodexo and Aramark who have won their union since we started our campaign in 2004. That’s 18,000 workers at some of the largest corporations in the world who now have a voice on the job and a way to win better pay and benefits for ourselves and our families.
•
Arbitration Victory—A union member at the Sodexo laundry in Buffalo, N.Y., who was unfairly terminated won his job back and more than $15,000 in back pay. At this time, we are fighting to win for workers in 30 more arbitration cases on issues from improper pay to unfair terminations.
•
Contract Gains—Members at Dillard and Xavier universities in New Orleans just voted to ratify union contracts with better wages, benefits, working conditions and premium pay for those who work split shifts.
•
Job Security—We used our political strength in New Jersey to win changes in state regulations and ensure consistent service that will benefit food service workers. Now when a new company comes into a school, it is required by law to offer jobs to the workers who were there before. This fall, we have to make our voices heard in Congress to win more funding for food service jobs.
There is still a lot of work to do to build on our victories. We need to continue to unite with the thousands of service workers who do not yet have a union so we will have even more strength to win good jobs. Please contact us at 1-888-798-6466 to learn more about how you can join us to build a strong, effective union that gets results for service workers across the country.
