by Cheyne “James Bond” Jones reston is the champion of the 2008 Inter-Hall female volleyball competition. With a mixture of outstanding talent, experience and aggression, the ladies of the A.Z. Preston Hall made the first distinguishing mark in the sporting area for the academic year. Led by Captain Lyn-Marie Dean and strengthened by the likes of Simone Forbes and Keesha “Rockstar” Robinson, the potent Preston unit was clearly a step above the other Halls of residence and commandingly took the trophy with a clean sweep of the tournament. Captain Lyn-Marie Dean believes that the title could not have been won without the fostering of good relationships

FUN!!!

Joke Box 20 YEARS IN PRISON A woman woke in the middle of the night to find her husband missing from their bed. In the stillness of the house, she could hear a muffled sound downstairs. She went downstairs and looked all around, still not finding her husband. Listening again, she could definitely hear moaning. She went down to the basement to find her husband, crouched in the corner facing the wall, sobbing. “What’s wrong with you?” she asked him. “Remember when your father caught us fooling around when you were 16?” he replied. “And remember, he said, I had two choices: I could either marry you, or spend the next 20 years in prison.” Baffled, she said, “yes, I remember. So?” “Well...I would have gotten out today!”

NEWLYWEDS Jimmy and Kathy are newlyweds in the honeymoon suite on their wedding night, and Kathy’s in the bathroom. As Jimmy’s getting undressed he says to himself, “How am I going to tell my new wife that I have the world’s smelliest feet?” He then throws his socks under the bed. Kathy walks out of the bathroom, and, too chicken to face her, Jimmy runs past her and goes into the bathroom. Kathy sits on the edge of the bed and says to herself, “How am I going to tell my new husband that I have the world’s worst breath? I’ve got to tell him.” Just then Jimmy walks out of the bathroom. Kathy runs up to him, gives him a huge wet kiss, pulls back and says, “Honey, I’ve got to tell you something.” Jimmy says, “Yeah, I know. You just ate my socks.”

BROKEN AFFECTION by Kemoi “Locksmith” Burke My feelings bloomed for you Like a flower in spring Like a piece of art It’s a beautiful thing. I can’t be without you Or maybe just without anyone I think about you all the time But why do I have this feeling? Is this love or merely lust? This was the time When I thought you were for me. I saw no flaws in my choice; I guess I didn’t see. I can’t believe I never saw it. What had blinded me? Everyone knew this would happen How come I couldn’t see? What am I to do now? Now that I can see With this knitted brow That you are not for me. My eyes will not see what they longed to see My lips will not kiss who they longed to kiss Why does life have to be mean to me? Full of hatred and pain instead of joy and bliss I don’t really want to leave I don’t really want to say goodbye But this is what I have to do To let my feelings for you die. So I’ll just say goodbye And I’ll bid you ado It is hard for me to leave But for my sake, this is what I must do.

ho ever said Preston couldn’t have the ultimate water party, would have eaten their words if they had attended our second annual MaskA-Raid fete on October 24. For, with one foam pit and three persons armed with water hoses, the sharks once again showed that they were a force to be reckoned with. The theme for this year’s party was entitled “Four Corners of the World”, where various patrons represented USA’s Mardi Gras, Brazilian Carnival, African Tribal and European by wearing different costumes to depict the themes. The party opened it’s gates around 10 p.m. and by 11 p.m., the foam pit was a big hit. Who didn’t care to get wet, stood on the sidelines until the “hose men” realised the plan and soon spoiled the plot to stay dry. Most men stood up to the Mardi Gras tradition and donned beads, while women came out in sexy swimwear and masks. Decorations and lights added to the carnival

atmosphere. So with the flashy decorations, sexy costumes and liquor flowing (of course) people did their nuh lingas, sweeps and gully creepas to the musical stylings of Richie Ras, Zip Jock Ice and DJ Nariti. Special selections, including “Fallen Soldier” and others, went out to Andy Lopez and the others who died, to show that although they were gone, they were not forgotten. Deputy CEAC SteffanChad Haughton said the event was very successful as over 600 patrons came out to support. “Mask-A-Raid has cemented itself as a significant event on the calendar,” he said. Adding that the event “made some money”, CEAC Ryan Esson said the funds would be given to the hall’s charity initiatives. Thanks goes out to the sponsors: Coco Cola, Monster, Heineken, Wata, Ocean Spray and Flawless Lighting.

Question: What are your views on the recently staged Culturama Inter-Hall Dance Competition?

Kimberley “Candy” Cunningham and photographer, Jermain “Polo” Headley got feedback from Prestonites:

“I think it was fair. Preston deserved second place.” – Renee “Beaver” Walsh.

“I thought we should have come first place. To me the dance done by Chansea was too explicit. The techniques of the Preston dancers were very tight.” – Tasania “ Magnum” Goffe.

“I think we weren’t treated properly in terms of the dancing. We were more organized than Chansea. Our dance was quite good.” – Kenna-Jay Brown

“I think it was. It was fair. Of course we would have wanted the first, but Chansea came good. People kinda vex… but smaddy haffi win an’ smaddy haffi lose.” – Warren “Bounty” Bertram.

“A tief dem tief… because mi nuh tink i’ did fair. Preston did dance much betta dan i’ whole a dem. Maybe is because dem [Chansea] did have man inna fi dem an’ we neva have none.” Dwayne “Lyrical” Cunningham.

Continue to build hall’s legacy l Continued from Page 1. Amsterdam; Reneece “68” Francis and Kameka “Ice cream” Pryce of Sherwood Manor; and Kadeen “Vision” Henry from Porto Santo. The Mr. and Miss Preston competition captures the beauty, talent and intelligence of members of the Preston family. The reigning Mr. and Miss Preston, Odain “Spectator” Murray and Nekeisha “Resilient” Lewis, have done well as ambassadors of the Hall. They have both achieved a lot during their year. Murray is now the Hall Committee secretary and Lewis is admired for her commitment and dedication to the Hall. Lewis is advising this year’s contestants to “…build on the efforts being made to cement into the minds of the wider campus

the enviable legacy of A. Z. Preston.” According to her, a most noteworthy attribute of Preston Hall is how conductive its environment is to the holistic development of its residents. “As a consequence, the Hall is able to produce remarkably talented and skilled individuals.” “The incoming king and queen need not measure themselves against others before them but establish their own goals and in everything they do, ensure not to lose their sense of self,” Lewis further advises. This year’s contestants will leave with a wide range of prizes including, trophies, medals, certificates as well as surprise prizes. However, the greatest rewards for participating in this competition is for them to gain

confidence, set and achieve goals, and learn to be the BEST PERSONS THEY CAN BE. Good luck to all contestants and may the best contestants win.

Experience of a first year by Yanique “Garage” Henry

T

he First-Year Experience is an experience of a lifetime. This is one of the most enlightening experiences that a first year will have throughout his/her entire university life. It has been described by some persons interviewed as interesting and fun. An Olympian said that initially she thought the programme would be uninteresting and boring. However, when she went to the first session, she said it was surprisingly “hype”. She now looks for ward to the interesting sessions and the drama presentations that are given during these sessions. An interesting aspect to these presentations is the television productions and the discussions that follow. Instead of a boring and dull lecture, we are invited to assess situations that are portrayed to us using real-life people and circumstances. The presenters then engage us in lively discussions that sometimes spark heated debates bet ween males and females. We would debate about

who is at fault if a romantic relationship goes bad, or who is to blame if a girl is being abused, or the steps that can be taken to help people who find themselves in difficult situations. These debates help us as first-year students to see all the perspectives in a situation. They also help us to analyse events and think rationally so that if we have to make certain decisions on campus we can make informed and not naive choices. At first glance the programme can be said to be preparing us for the university experience by allowing us to “experience without experience”. However, as one interviewee said, “it doesn’t just prepare us for the UWI but it prepares us for a life outside of home”. One person even said that apart from Orientation this is one of the best programmes that have been prepared for the Freshers on Hall. He highlighted that it teaches responsible living in all areas of our lives. I will leave you with this memorable quote obtained from one of the sessions “be who you is and not who you ain’t cause if you ain’t who you is, then you is who you ain’t.”

ith the recent outbreak of ‘pink-eye’ (conjunctivitis) across the island and more specifically on campus, it important that we become more informed about the condition so that necessary precautions can be taken. Conjunctivitis is an infection or inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin transparent membrane that covers the white part of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids. Though the condition can be alarming due to the rate at which it spreads and the extent to which it can cause the eyes to become red, it causes no long-term damage to the eyes or vision. Pink eye can be caused by: • viruses • bacteria • Allergies (including smoke, pollen, chlorine in swimming pools, cosmetics ingredients as well as other products that come in contact with the eye) • a chemical splash

he Aston Preston Hall is the proud home of the first and most organized radio syndicate on a Hall of Residence at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona campus- SHARK RADIO. Shark Radio uses the network phones on the Hall to broadcast news, entertainment and religious programmes on four days each week. Shark News, which is produced by Andewale McLaughlin, plays a vital role on the Aston Preston Hall. It seeks to bridge the gap between the wider society and the residents of the Hall by keeping Prestonites abreast of local, regional and international issues. At times there are things happening in the general societyeven as close as Mona itself- and Prestonites are quite ignorant as many residents do not have access to broadcast media and they also do not engage the print media. Shark News is aired three days per week. On Mondays and Wednesdays, there are two newscasts: 7:15a.m. and 8:30p.m. On Fridays, Shark News is read only in the morning (at 7:15a.m.). Some of the new machines have been placed in previously empty workstations, while others were used to replace malfunctioning computers. Now Prestonites can work in more comfort as many are amazed by the speed of the new computers. They have also helped in allowing more persons to access the services of the lab at any one time.
