URGENT APPEAL TO THE POLITICAL LEADERS, MEDIA OUTLETS AND PEOPLE OF THE EUROPEAN UNION AND TURKEY RE: Plight of the Syriac-Orthodox Mor (Saint) Gabriel Monastery in southeast Turkey Saturday, December 13, 2008 Dear Sir/Madam, On behalf of the Syriac Universal Alliance, the acknowledged voice of the Syriac (or Aramean) people, we are pressed to bring to your attention the imminent and disturbing events faced by the Syriac Orthodox Saint Gabriel Monastery (“Saint Gabriel Monastery”) in southeast Turkey. Saint Gabriel Monastery is currently embroiled in the malicious and frivolous legal proceedings commenced by the Turkish state and neighbouring villages in an attempt to legitimize the stealing of the Monastery’s lands. The Court has recently handed down decisions against Saint Gabriel Monastery in blatant violation of the basic human rights and property rights. Saint Gabriel Monastery immediately appealed the grossly erroneous decisions and is now scheduled for two appeal proceedings on 19 December 2008 and 16 January 2009. In addition to this, three neighbouring villages have commenced new proceedings against Saint Gabriel Monastery, scheduled to be heard on 31 December 2008, as part of a systematic hate campaign against the Syriac Aramean Christians. We have enclosed in our letter the “Report on Human Rights and Property Rights Abuses Facing the Syriac Monastery of Mor (Saint) Gabriel in Midyat, Turkey” which contains all the necessary information that clearly explains the facts surrounding this disturbing affair. With great regret and alarming concern, the stealing of the Syriac lands in Turkey appears to be part of a greater sinister and systematic campaign against the Syriac people of Turkey. Saint Gabriel Monastery is yet again being attacked and placed under severe pressure to protect its ever eroding human rights and property rights. Unfortunately, we must note that this campaign against Saint Gabriel Monastery appears not to be an isolated incident, as it is part of a larger effort to remove lands from Syriac Christians across Turkey. We ask that media outlets, politicians and human rights organisations form one voice and pressure Turkey to uphold fundamental principles of natural justice. Only with a continued international and local declaration, can all people of Turkey, including the Syriac people, remain safe and protected against injustice. The court proceedings will be initiated shortly and we ask for urgent action from you. We thank you for your consideration of this matter.
