When you say that students are allowed one late assignment. Does this mean that they can turn it in a whole week late when the class meets again or do they have to get it to you somehow the next day? Overall, I think the syllabus provides a very clear overview of the course.

1

6.67%

I found it quite easy to understand what the course will cover and what is expected from the students by reading the syllabus.

1

6.67%

I think that the course syllabus was really easy to follow, read and understand. I think the language used to convey the rules and expectations did a good job of finding a balance between friendliness and seriousness. I for sure got a good idea of what to expect in the class, and I don't think changes need to be made.

1

6.67%

It is clear what the student is going to learn in the class. It is primarily a "learn the skills class," but students are still expected to learn basic information that will help them in the future.

1

6.67%

It looked very kid-friendly from my perspective. I liked all the colors and video's. Everything was explained thoroughly. I think that everything I would need is there.

1

6.67%

Overall, I think that the overview gives a great idea as to what skills students will learn in this course. However, I am not sure if you would like include exactly what they are learning. I remember when I was taking this class we learned about plants and reproduction. I would suggest including what subjects the kids will be learning in addition to the skills that accompany it. And one small thing- for me, things in yellow are hard to read so I would suggest making it darker or another color.

1

6.67%

The course syllabus clearly explained everything that a student taking this course would need to know about what they would be learning and what would be expected of them. The only thing I would change is to say the videos they are expected to watch are on the moodle page under the course syllabus. I thought something was missing from the page when I read about the videos. Also, I didn't like the separate page about the course goals. All the different colors made it hard to read and the map didn't show up well.

1

6.67%

The course syllabus does this pretty well.

1

6.67%

The course syllabus was very comprehensive and outlined the course extremely well. It seemed to have a very organized approach to it, describing in detail the expectations of the course, but also the materials necessary for the course. The note about the grading policy was also helpful; indicating that this class was not self-paced and that meeting deadlines would be crucial. Reminding students that some structure will be provided.

1

6.67%

The document is good. It has everything that a normal course syllabus would have. Might consider making it on a PDF.

1

6.67%

The learning objectives and expectations were discussed enough to get a good idea of what the course would entail. Although it is a hybrid class, incoming freshman may still require a reminder on classroom etiquette.

1

6.67%

The syllabus clearly outlined all the expectations for the course as well as a clear set of rules and boundaries. It laid out the framework for the class pretty well.

1

6.67%

The syllabus really helps one understand the class expectations and requirements and provides a expansive overview of the class.

1

6.67%

Very complete and thorough, although for the grading policy part, you might consider giving examples of the typical assignments or how much they are worth pointwise, just for detail.

1

6.67%

You tell the incoming freshman that they can contact you if they are having difficulty meeting the deadline of the assignment, but since they are new, they are unfamiliar with the concept of emailing a teacher. Unless this is all going to be done through moodle messaging...

All of the learning targets are clearly identified within each module.

1

6.67%

At first, I didn't get what some concepts were that were listed under learning targets, but they were explained later on

1

6.67%

throughout the module. Different colors makes it hard to read, writing should be in black and white, important information should be in bold or accented in red. The link brings the student to a think map. It needs to be bigger to be able to be read. The information given is very comprehensive

1

6.67%

For the most part, I thought that the learning objectives were clear at the beginning of the module. They demonstrated what each student should be able to do after completing the module as well as what they will learn.

1

6.67%

Honestly, I don't know how you could possibly make the objectives any clearer. Personally, it the issue of reading over those objectives that would be an issue, if I were in this class. Of course, as this is an optional course, hopefully the students will be interested in really learning the skills these modules. In that case, they have all the resources clearly stated for them, and it is very user friendly. The targets are very clearly stated.

1

6.67%

I really like the set up of the objectives and the targets. It helps a lot that it is color coordinated and that it is in bullet-point form. It makes it very clear as to what the kids should know and the fact that it is in "I can" form instead of "you can" form. The "I can" form gives the targets a less threatening tone. Also, I like how it is specific. Good job!

1

6.67%

If possible, make the font color for learning targets the same color, or a different font all together so as to have it stick out.

1

6.67%

In module one, the fact that for the learning targets the "I" refers to the student and then immediately afterward where you ask, "What do you know about reading?" the "I" is referencing you. It took me a reread to understand this.

1

6.67%

It was nice how at the bottom of every module the targets were clearly listed in bullet points.

1

6.67%

The learning targets clearly summarize what will be accomplished in that specific module.

1

6.67%

The objectives are stated at the beginning of each module and highlighted.

1

6.67%

They are clearly stated, might want to consider lessening the amount of words on the front page, it seems overwhelming.

1

6.67%

They clearly state what it is that you should know following the completion of the module.

1

6.67%

They use I can statements which give the reader more ownership and responsibility.

6.67%

First off, I would just like to say that somewhere on the site you should mention that if the students have any questions when they are at home doing this, that they should feel free to email you their questions. I really like the thinking map section and I liked the video and the examples shown because when I was first learning them, I needed lots of examples! Also, Creately is really easy to use and I was able to create a tree map on there.

1

6.67%

For the most part, I think instructions are clear. I just found one place to make a suggestion about directions. In module 3, you tell the kids to use a thinking map to tell their story. I think this needs some elaboration, because I don't quite understand where you would want me to begin and what kind of story you are referring to. That's all! Everything is else is good.

1

6.67%

I thought that the instructions made the modules pretty easy to follow and almost self-explanatory. This looks fine.

1

6.67%

In module 3, I think you should describe what "My Story" is. A story about the student's life or what?

1

6.67%

Instructions are quite clear. They clearly state what the assignment is and what needs to be done. It also mentions what resources/skills that will be employed in the activity.

1

6.67%

It was easy to follow what you want the students to do in each activity. The checklists and rubrics you provided were very helpful, since they included what the students are supposed to cover. However, you might want to clarify that they will have to make a blogspot account in order to post to the note-taking blog to avoid confusion.

1

6.67%

Most of the directions are clear, but its hard to understand which ones to do. There are different types of assignments, so its hard to tell if a student needs to do it or not.

1

6.67%

Some modules involve activities that are under the video; you may want to make a note mentioning their location. You also might want to make a note before the reading and note taking strategies about the differences between them. When they are required to talk about their previous experiences they might get them messed up. The activities to complete for note taking are a little unclear.

1

6.67%

Some of the directions are sometimes too clear, maybe let the kids figure some stuff out and learn from their own mistakes and ask you questions if they have any.

1

6.67%

The directions are clear but the one website that you allow them to navigate to on Two Column Notes is slightly dense and wordy. I'm not sure freshman would read it.

1

6.67%

The directions themselves are clear, though the layout of each module is a bit unclear. Module #4 is a bit busy and the directions don't stand out.

1

6.67%

The instructions are clear-cut and explanatory and describe exactly what it is that needs to be done.

1

6.67%

The instructions are given very precisely as to what is expected.

1

6.67%

I really like the integration of the discussion boards. Discussion boards are a great way to feel connected to everybody in the class on the days that they do not meet. Also, I am really liking this creately site! Plus, for the SCAN and RUN techniques, they are able to use it for their reading homework, which gives them a way to use it and apply the techniques. However, the one problem with this hybrid class is that these kids will be coming from different junior highs and they will not know each other like we (as seniors) do now. This can make it seem like the kids are "alone". Is there a way to add a "get to know you" kind of activities? Or possibly get everyone comfortable with each other when they meet.

1

6.67%

I think that the activities will do a good job in assessing the new skills the students have learned in the modules. However, you might want to include some forums/blogs that sparks more discussion.

1

6.67%

I thought that the modules were great. Module 2:Two-Column Note-Taking was really funny and the AudioPal made me laugh. I think all of the cool colors would be very exciting and interesting. Module 3: Thinking Maps Training had a SUPER cool map. I really liked how it popped around and explained the differences between maps.

1

6.67%

Looking at it from the point of view of knowing what is needed to be successful in honors bio the activities are helpful. The worksheets would seem a little tedious though to some students who believe they know how to note take or read actively. I know my freshman year i would not have been open to the SCAN and RUN technique.

1

6.67%

Many of the activities are fun, and the powerpoints are helpful, but more more words might be helpful for the map powerpoint.

1

6.67%

The activities are a mixed bag, some are entertaining and cute but at the same time, it gets really annoying after a while.

1

6.67%

The activities are engaging but a bit cheesy.

1

6.67%

The activities are somewhat engaging, but mostly just give you the information they expect you to learn. I feel as if they should be more fun and hands on =)

1

6.67%

The activities require anyone doing them to understand what is expected of them and to prove it. If they don't pay attention then they won't be able to complete the work, forcing them to engage in the activities.

1

6.67%

The activities are engaging enough for students to complete it, which is all that is required.

1

6.67%

The animations and videos in the beginning of several modules work well to capture interest, and the modules themselves are mostly interactive.

1

6.67%

The curriculum isn't really an engaging curriculum in the first place but I think the activities you chose supplemented the course and its' learning objectives.

1

6.67%

They had a strong core and it was clear what the student was supposed to take from it. The video's were very insightful and easy to understand. I liked that most slides were from the PowerPoint shown in honors bio.

1

6.67%

Well, I think they are as engaging as they can be, based on the lack of content this course allows. This "strategy stuff" is not exactly the most intriguing of topics. It's definitely a positive that the modules make the students actually do things, and not just read. I approve.

Question 10 (Free response)* 15 of 15 respondents answered this question. Comment

100% All the activities require students to employ the skills that they have just learned. They also properly test them on it. As mentioned in the previous comment, the presentations and activities will help the students in learning what was mentioned in the beginning in the learning targets section. Great! I especially like that you included the activity on evaluating web sources since most incoming freshman would not know how to distinguish the reliability of a website. I have not gotten through the entire actitivies, but they seem more than adaquate. It was clear what the student was supposed to learn from the activities.

The activities you chose to support the learning targets were very good because they guided me to achieve the learning targets. The activities were geared exactly towards the learn The activities demonstrate how to complete the activities and then allow them to try it out themselves. The activities do serve as excellent assistance for developing the skills that the course strives to achieve. The activities in these modules relate directly to the topics you are teaching them. No problems here. The activities kept me interested throughout the entire module and therefor felped my learn all the targets The activities successfully convey the information expected to be learned. The learning targets provide the knowledge and necessary information to complete each module. This was done well.

1

6.67%

Directions get a bit lost, but otherwise it's okay.

1

6.67%

I found that each module flowed nicely into the next.

1

6.67%

I think you should just add the learning targets at the end of each module to make sure that the student knows them. I find it helpful when teachers list the objectives at the beginning and end of the modules. It makes me review and make sure I learned what I was supposed to.

1

6.67%

I thought that each module had a nice progression. First, the expectations were identified, then the material was presented, and finally each student would be assessed. I also thought that in between modules, there was a nice flow as the student prepares himself/herself for Honors Biology or any other class.

1

6.67%

Not only does it flow well from beginning to end, but they also tie together well. For example: modual 1 takes about reading

1

6.67%

strategies then modual 2 goes write into note taking strategies. it seems very logical and organized. Some modules are really long with several parts. If a student were to dedicate adequate time to each and every part of the module then by the time they come back to the original module framework it doesn't always connect and flow. However, the flow is adequate enough.

1

6.67%

The activities do a good job of building on one another.

1

6.67%

The flow is complete and easy to follow. I feel like the tasks assigned come in order and have purpose. It makes sense.

1

6.67%

The module flows logically through segment to segment, but there is a lot of color.

1

6.67%

The modules seem to smoothly connect from one to another.

1

6.67%

The order of the modules are logical, since the previous module will go over skills that will help in applying the skills of the rest of the modules.

1

6.67%

They are in a logical order. They begin with testing previous knowledge, then teaching them, and then having them try it out.

1

6.67%

Yes it does.

1

6.67%

Yes, it flows nicely from beginning to end because one cannot complete the other without the targets learned from the previous module. Students will have to learn how to read scientific literature and learn how to take notes before thinking critically on their own. They need a solid foundation before moving on to more complex ideas.

All the technology needed is pretty basic and straightforward. The instructions are straightforward and clear so that is helpful too.

1

6.67%

Easy to use.

1

6.67%

Having been in high school for three years, I am more aquainted with the technology than the average incoming freshman, so I'm not sure if this questiom should be answered for me.

1

6.67%

I agree that the technology required is fairly easy to use, however this might be a bias opinion because I already know how to use moodle and I already know how to upload documents on google docs and how to reply to people on the discussion boards. However, when I created a Creatly account and made a map, it was fairly easy and I have never done it before.

1

6.67%

I can't say I did not know how to use the technology already, so I am biased, however, I don't think students will have trouble figuring it out. They're smart :) Also, the benefit of meeting once a week would allow any technical problems to be worked out.

1

6.67%

I understood how to use the technology, however it would be very annoying to make accounts for so many web sites. I think you should make it clear to students to use the same user name and password for all, so they don't forget.

1

6.67%

Instructions were provided and were very clear as to how to utilize the technology.

1

6.67%

Nowadays, most technology is pretty self explanatory so not much explanation is needed (for me at least).

Question 16 (Free response)* 15 of 15 respondents answered this question. Comments Number of Respondents

Percent

Although students work together, i don't like the idea of the online work. I don't feel as though students will be working together as much, rather students would work on their own portion of the project. I have learned from experience that this style does not work in honors bio and ALL other classes.

1

6.67%

Freshman are shy and the only interaction (unless i missed something) is respondiong to other's posts. I do not think they are going to be honest or do this well if they only met a few times and do not know eachother. Or they will stick to talking only with peers from their feeder school.

1

6.67%

I agree that using discussion boards helps to keep an interaction between students in the class. However, you have to keep in mind these kids are coming from different junior highs and they will probably not know anybody and they will already feel lonely and isolated, like I have said before. I suggest adding more bonding activities so that the kids will make friends when they go to the discussion board.

1

6.67%

I don't believe there is enough prompting for collaboration or interaction. But again, this is a skills and strategies for personal improvement so I don't think it matters much, other than learning to collaborate together on powerpoints and other presentations.

1

6.67%

I feel as if the modules were working more towards individual understanding, rather than group understanding.

1

6.67%

I really like the last forum with the critical thinking since that instigates discussion amongst the students. However, I think it would be better if there were more opportunities to interact with each other since they will only be meeting once per week

1

6.67%

I think more discussion boards could be required so that students can agree/disagree/comment on other students' works.

1

6.67%

I'm not sure how well group projects will work out because students will not be seeing each other on a regular basis, but the fact that there are multiple discussion boards throughout the online course make it a good way for students to interact amongst themselves. Maybe a little "netiquette" should be elaborated upon at the beginning of the course to ensure the students are following guidelines and know how to properly post to forums.

1

6.67%

Some of the technology for the class definitely encourages corroboration and cooperation. Students could use a multitude of different resources, as well as each other to complete their work. Putting myself in the student's shoes, I think Google Docs and Dim Dim would be used most often.

1

6.67%

the actitivites such as reading, looking at the thinking maps, note-taking strategies do not really initate cooperation.

1

6.67%

The activities encourage a more solitary approach than a collaborative one. Little coordination between students is necessitated.

1

6.67%

The students have the option, but they are not required, therefore they might not do it. So a requirment would be good.

1

6.67%

They have to comment on each others work which makes them interact.

1

6.67%

Well, when you are told to read over peers' work and comment, interaction is pretty much a given. I only agree, however, because meeting once a week won't necessarily give the total benefit of meeting and interacting every day. It's a different environment that inevitably creates less interaction than a classroom.

However, if the students are struggling with the technology part of the assignments, such as uploading documents or adding onto the discussion boards, they might be at a disadvantage. I would say be sure that all kids know how to do it and maybe have a "practice" board so that they can play around and get used to discussion boards and uploading before they have to do it for a grade.

It appears as if they do. This was done well.

It seems reasonable that all students will be able to complete the assessments, projects, and assignments.

The activities, as i already mentioned, do a very good job of teaching what is necessary for honors bio

The assessments appear to be fair.

The assessments are targeted straight at the learning objectives in order to ensure that the student has met requirements for that specific module.

The assignments are straightforward and adequate skills and resources are provided beforehand to best prepare the students for the assessments.

1

The student knows what is expected of them and so they are graded fairly based on how much they paid attention to the expectations.

Yes. They are pretty on target. I wouldn't mind doing them and they are pretty fair.

You've got to have quizzes and tests to learn! They are very fair, but if there is any discrepancy, it can easily be worked out. I wouldn't worry.

general - this doesn't seem content based. It was well done, but i personally wouldn't take the class.

I think all of the resources for this class are definitely there and it is clearly well put together. I would be excited to take such a class.

Is there an online book link for both the north and west book, as to familiarize the students with what they should expect? I think that would be a fair trade off for all the time they will spend on this course. Just wanted to suggest that.

Like I previously said, the science fair/paper packet might be helpful to include for module 5. Netiquette may be a small link

Be sure to emphasize that blogging is to be formal and not in shorthand or text and conversational language. I know it is in the netiquette section but i think it needs to be reinforced by your words.

I like the course very much. I think that it will help students get mentally "fit" for the honors bio class. I personally would tone down the colors-still have colors but not so contrasty. Also, students, like consistancy, (I do) so maybe the layout could be more consistant or look less busy. Other than that, I would take this course if I was an incoming freshman. P.S.Sorry I was being very critical. I hope it helps.

I think the course was made very nicely even though there isn't actual biology content in it. The learning targets were reasonable along with the activities and assignments. Overall, I think you did an amazing job Mrs. Naughton =]

I would just say to be sure that all of the kids feel comfortable with each other as classmates and that they know each other. Also, I would be sure that the kids understand the technology part of this course because coming from 8th grade, this will seem like a lot of new stuff at once and I think some kids are more tech savvy than others. I would have practice sessions to let kids play around with different sites and skills without feeling the pressure of ruining their grade. Otherwise, I think that this course is going to be great!

There really is not a lot you need to do to improve this course. I think it looks good, flows well, makes sense, and achieves all the goals this class serves to teach. Great job, Mrs. Naughton!

Try and add a bit about biology, rather than just how to take Honors Bio. I feel that would be more beneficial.
