The winter season has now ended with the provincials at all levels being completed. I would like to congratulate all the officials, first for being able to participate and secondly for doing a fine job. Hopefully you will take back to your association all the constructive comments to make everyone a better official. There are many summer tournaments that are available to further your official development.
SPECIAL POINTS OF INTEREST:
We had two members of our officiating family do very well in the USA this year. Karen Lasiuk who is still an

ABOA member worked the NCAA Division II Womens Final. Clarke Stevens who was at the Superweekend in September, worked in the NCAA Division I tournament with his last assignment being a National semi-final. Congratulations Karen and Clarke. The ABOA AGM was held in Calgary on April 29. Elections were held for a new executive. We thank Trevor Viney for his contributions to the ABOA as he did not run again for the VP position. Perry Stothart was elected to take his place. Unfortunately we had a low turnout at the meeting. We strongly encourage the members of the ABOA to
participate in your association. The ABOA has made great strides to make Alberta officials being noticed in national tournaments. We would like that to continue with more people showing support by running for positions or coming to vote. The Cabinet meeting that was held before the AGM was also not well attended. Communication is always better when it occurs face to face. FIBA rules are in place for all leagues for the 2007/08 season. Please make sure that you are ready to commit to a weekend clinic in the fall to learn these rules. Have a good summer.
Super Weekend Mark your calendars. calendars Basketball Alberta and ABOA will once again present Super Weekend, a clinic for coaches and officials on the weekend of September 21-23 in Edmonton. The focus will be on FIBA rules and mechanics. More information will be available on the ABOA website soon..

Summer Officiating Opportunities ABOA has several appointments this summer for officials to receive recognition for their work this season and to continue their development for the future. A. Western Canada Summer Games will feature tournaments involving U15 (Midget) Girls & Boys provincial teams from the 4 western provinces + the territories August 3 - 7 in Sherwood Park. Alberta receives 7 appointments to this tournament with BC, SK and MB each sending one official. ABOA will provide 2 Assignor / Evaluators. FIBA rules will be played so the officials will be expected to study them in advance. ABOA will conduct a pre-tournament meeting and brief rules overview. As per Games policy no game fees are paid, instead the officials receive a gear package. All accommodations, meals as well as travel are paid for the out-of-towners. The ABOA Evaluation Committee will select officials for this tournament B. Great Canadian Shootout is a huge tournament in Edmonton involving over 100 teams in all age classifications and goes June 29 - July 2. The Canada West Camp was run in conjunction with this event in past years but now is held at SFU in Burnaby. The tournament features some high level and intense games and provides officials with the opportunity to develop their skills at the next level. EBOA assigns most of the officials but needs your assistance. Any officials wishing to come to Edmonton will receive lots of games as well as a travel & per diem allowance. Accommodations for now are on their own, but efforts will be made to look after this. FIBA rules will be played. Interested officials should contact me if they wish to receive a provincial evaluation in addition to working games and they will be assigned accordingly in higher level games. I would like to hear from them by June 10th at the latest. Details will then be provided. C. Basketball Alberta's Tournament is tentatively scheduled for July 27 - 29 and will feature U15 & U17 provincial teams training to get ready for their respective National Championships in August. The likely location is Calgary. ABOA would like to identify several candidates from throughout the province to assist in their continued development. These officials will either be selected to Summer National Appointments or be under consideration, as well as to further their chances of moving up to ACAC ball. FIBA rules will be played. Interested officials contact me by June 10th, with details to follow. Officials will receive game fees, expenses and a provincial evaluation. D. National Championship Summer Appointments - Alberta will receive three appointments this summer to the Midget and Juvenile Championships to be held August 10 -14 and August 14 - 18. Subject to the input from the Evaluation Committee and evaluations from Provincials, a short list will be drawn up early in June. While we will only be able to select a fortunate few, those receiving consideration are in line for the tournaments above and opportunities in the future. It's important that local boards give their deserving members the chance to be identified by ABOA. If you have solid, developing officials with potential, please ensure we are made aware of them. I would also encourage ABOA members to attend a camp this summer. There are many available by going to http:// www.stripezone.com and scrolling down to Officiating Camps. Two I will recommend are the Canada West Camp June 29 - July 2 in Burnaby, BC, contact
[email protected] ,and the Prairie Dog Camp in Saskatoon July 6 - 8, contact
