SPECIAL POINTS OF INTEREST:
• Super Weekend is back on September 23-24 in Calgary. This will replace the annual ABOA Clinic which has been in place for the past few years.
ACAC and CIS Women will change to FIBA starting in September of this year. Alberta Schools Athletic Association voted overwhelmingly at its AGM in May to change to FIBA rules for the 2007-08 season. ABOA is encouraging all other leagues (recreation or community) to remain with their current NCAA rules until the fall of 2007. Super Weekend will feature sessions on FIBA for college and CIS Women’s officials—see Super
Weekend Article on page 4 of the Newsletter. For more information on FIBA rules and mechanics manual go to the FIBA website at http://www.fiba.com/pages/en/ aboutfiba/downloads/regulations.asp

Interpreter’s Report September 2006 The upcoming season will clearly be a year of challenges for our ABOA members. By now you’ve probably heard about the plan to move to one consistent set of rules in Canada. Unfortunately this process will not be completed in one season. For the upcoming season some officials will have to work with multiple sets of rules. Below is a table that outlines the rule set in use at the various levels in the province. CIS MEN
NCAA (with last year’s modifications)
CIS WOMEN
FIBA (No modifications)
ACAC MEN
FIBA (No modifications)
ACAC WOMEN
FIBA (No modifications)
ASAA
NCAA (with last year’s modifications)
Basketball Alberta
FIBA (No modifications)
(club and summer nationals) On this website you will find the NCAA rule changes that will be in use for this season. I strongly recommend that all officials ask their local board to get them an NCAA rulebook. Officials need to make a commitment to their avocation and have an updated rulebook with them at all games.
Quite simply there is no excuse for an
official at the For those officials who referee either ACAC or CIS basketball an order has been placed to get copies of the current FIBA rulebook and casebook. The post secondary Basketball Alberta office will receive these and send them to the various local level to not contact people. Your local board will have to decide on the payment method to know the rule be used as these books come from Canada Basketball and there are costs inregardless of volved. Again having the correct rulebook with you is part of the commitment which game is made to officiate at the post secondary level. As one of the province’s elite offibeing played.” cials you are expected to handle switching from one rule set to the other and not “kicking a rule” during a game. Quite simply there is no excuse for an official at the post secondary level to not know the rule regardless of which game is being played. In 2007-08 the ASAA will be moving to FIBA rules. At this time the CIS men have not yet committed to the change over. The ACAC and CIS officials will be writing the FIBA exam in October. As this is the transition year for the move to FIBA rules the exam can be written in an open book fashion. Officials must still score 80% or more to be an ACAC official and officials wanting to be considered for national assignments must score at least 86%. On this website you will find a power point presentation that highlights the differences between FIBA and NCAA rules.

ASAA officials will write the ABOA exam in November. As per CABO policy the exam must be written in a closed book setting. Local education officers may provide guidance to clarify a question but no one should have access to a rulebook during the writing of the exam. Further, officials are responsible for their own answers; therefore the supervisor should discourage the sharing of any information between those writing the exam. A score of at least 80% is required for consideration for an ASAA provincial assignment. Lastly, Basketball Alberta is re-launching Superweekend this year. At one time Superweekend was a stable for officials throughout the province who wanted to improve their games and meet with fellow referees. The social network developed at Superweekend was a real part of the growth of officiating in Alberta. The ABOA has been lobbying for quite sometime for this event to return to the provincial scene. The success of this year’s event and it’s future is obviously dependent on a good turnout. Check this website for registration information and costs. During Superweekend a detailed presentation will be made covering FIBA rules. ACAC officials are reminded that they must attend a provincial clinic or approved camp every 2 years to stay eligible for conference assignments. If you did not attend last year’s clinic or a camp during the past two summers you must attend this year’s Superweekend. Morgan Munroe, Interpreter
Alberta Summer Games Fourteen Officials—Carl Artis (CBOA), Jackie Auch (EBOA), Steve Enright (BRBOA), Sean Hamilton (BRBOA), Kristen Kwiatek (EBOA), Guy Lanigan (MHBOA), Teigan Lawton (DVBOA), David Lem (CBOA), Christian Lohmann (CABOA), Roy McArthur (CABOA), Kevin Metcalf (DVBOA), Tanner Newans (CABOA), Kyle Rice (EBOA) and Erin Schellenberg (CABOA) - and two evaluators— Grant Simmons (EBOA) and Ken Runquist (CBOA) participated in the Alberta Summer Games in Red Deer on July 27-30. There was a good mix of younger and more experienced officials from across the province who represented ABOA well. Everyone involved appreciated the opportunity to work with differ-
ent officials and enjoyed the fellowship with their peers—thanks to CABOA and Joe Gorsline for their hospitality. We stayed in the student residences at Red Deer College and were treated very well with the exception of a few ignorant parents. The only other problem was a certain female official working the boys’ side who made disparaging remarks about one of the evaluators’ age—she will pay in the future. Kristen Kwiatek and Sean Hamilton did the boys’ gold medal game with Jackie Auch and Steve Enright doing the girls. The next ASG will be held August 8-10, 2008 in Medicine Hat. Don’t miss this excellent opportunity to improve your game.
