STITCH FOR THE CURE By Michael Boren

I am pleased to announce the date for our third annual “Stitch for the Cure” event will be Saturday, November 22 from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. at the Virginia Quilt Museum. This is a wonderful opportunity to do what we love, stitch, while doing something to benefit others. This year we are expanding our fund-raising efforts to include the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance. As some of you may know, Joan Knight, the Director of the Virginia Quilt Museum, was diagnosed last year with ovarian cancer. She was one of the rare few to be diagnosed and treated at an early stage of the disease. So, this year’s proceeds will go to The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and/or the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance, as well as the Virginia Quilt Museum.

Diane Trobaugh and Kathleen Brennan are chairing this event with me. Our Honorary Co-chairs are Sue Tedrick, Barbara Levy, Barbara Pollen and Joan Knight. My friend, the noted teacher and designer, Orna

Willis, has created a beautiful design, “Gibor”, shown in the photos accompanying this article. This is a new design, and we will be the first to stitch it. The project is worked on 18-mono canvas. The color options are: Pink on pink marbled canvas; Pink on white opalescent canvas; Teal (for ovarian cancer) on white opalescent canvas; Green on green marbled canvas; and, Purple on eggshell with gold canvas. Since you may want to stitch for both of these important women’s health causes, Orna is offering a reduced price for a second (and subsequent) colorway. Join me in stitching both the pink and the teal colorways! The costs to participate in this event are as follows: • Kit fee of $66.00 (supplied by Orna, and includes the canvas, color photo, instructions, and full skeins/spools of all of the threads needed to complete the design). For a second (and subsequent) colorway(s), the kit cost will be $41.00. • Contribution of $20.00, minimum, which will go to the Komen Foundation and/or the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance as you choose. Please feel free to contribute any amount above this minimum. • Contribution of $5.00, minimum, which will go to the Virginia Quilt Museum. Again, please feel free to contribute any amount above this minimum.

This special stitching event is open to members of The Shenandoah Valley Chapter only. This is a great time for you to encourage your stitching friends who are not chapter members to join. There will be no limit on the number of live or “ghost” participants. If you have a floorstand, you might consider bringing it in order to free up table space for others. For those members who may not be able to attend, you may still participate in this project at the costs noted above, with the following difference: the $5.00 that would have gone to the VQM will be used to offset the cost of mailing the kit. I have promised to give Orna a final kit count on October 15. The deadline for registration will be October 11, 2008. This means that your sign-up sheets and checks must be in my hands by that date. This will give Orna the time she needs to order canvas, and prepare the kits. Please use the coupons below to register. The check for the kit fee should be made payable to The Shenandoah Valley Chapter-ANG, and mailed to me as noted below. For the contribution amounts, you can do one of the following: (1) make a single check payable to The Shenandoah Valley Chapter-ANG, indicate how you wish the money to be disbursed

between the two charities and mail it to me; or (2) make a check(s) payable to the Susan G, Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and/or the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance and another check payable to the Virginia Quilt Museum (or SVC-ANG if kit is to be mailed) and mail those checks to me. We have made plans to have lunch at Mrs. Hardesty’s Tea Room, located just across Main Street from the VQM from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Their lunch menu has a variety of entrees ranging in price from $5.95 to $8.10. They also have pastries and a variety of beverages, most notably hot tea. I have had several of these items, and they have all been delicious. We will take individual lunch orders first thing that morning so that the food will be ready when we arrive at the restaurant. We will have a private dining room for our party, and we have guaranteed the restaurant that we would have a minimum of 25 people. Although you are not required to attend the lunch, we would like to encourage you to do so. Please indicate on the kit form that you will be attending the lunch so we can keep a head count. Since the day will be starting quite early for many of us, be assured that we will have a midmorning break with some good eats to ward off the hunger pangs that may set in before lunch! For the class, you will need 12” x 12” stretcher bars, scissors for cutting metallic threads, and all of your other usual stitching supplies. Thank you in advance for your participation, and I look forward to seeing you on November 22 as we “Stitch for the Cure”.
