London is getting closer At least in time. Some time in 2009 the rail journey to London will take just 59 minutes from Canterbury West, cutting travel time by one third. This will restore Canterbury West's pre-eminence over Canterbury East. After all it was the first rail link to London, opening in 1846 fourteen years before the London Chatham and Dover line reached Canterbury East in 1860. The greatly increased use of Canterbury West will impose considerable pressure on Station Road West and the St Dunstans area. However this presents us with a golden opportunity to redress the imbalance in the city created by the dominance of Whitefriars and the resulting diminished commercial prosperity of St Peter's Street and St Dunstans. An imaginative solution would be to erect a multi storey car park on the existing surface car park in Station Road West, ideally fronted by housing. This would facilitate the closure of the north lane car park and thus release an area for a paved public space which could provide for markets and outdoor events. St Dunstans could thus capture some of the commercial activity and pedestrian flow currently imposed on an overcrowded Whitefriars. Canterbury city centre badly needs more public outdoor space. The resurgence of Canterbury West could be the catalyst for a revitalisation and enhancement of St Dunstan's. John Ellaby
