STATEMENT OF PURPOSE For as long back as I can remember, knowledge has always fascinated me. I have always been motivated by some ingrained competitiveness to know more than the next person. Early on, however, I recognized that the mere acquisition of information was not enough for me. I wanted to actually achieve something with what I knew, solve problems, which would affect the real world. I came to the conclusion that the intelligent usage of technology was vital to improve human lives and solve related problems. It was therefore I decided to become a scientist. Though I am from a non-scientific family background but my parents have always motivated me to excel in whatever career I choose for myself. I wanted to make my parents proud because they are the ones to whom I owe all my achievements in life. After doing my B.Sc. Biochemistry (H) from a reputed college of Delhi University, Sri Venkateswara College, I had learnt the technique of Gene cloning under the project funded by The International Centre For Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB),New Delhi to clone the genes of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This gave me a new zeal to enter into research. To learn something new, I also did an Add - on course on Bioinformatics & Computational Biology from Sri Venkateswara College Bioinformatics Centre funded by DBT. I gave national level entrances for my post-graduation and cleared the admission test of TIFR, NCBS and got 19th rank in Joint Admission test to M.Sc.(JAM) organized by Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT). I was selected for Integrated Ph.D at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai after their interview and on the basis of submission of a project, was called for an interview at National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Bangalore. Finally I joined in one of the prestigious institutes of India, the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IITR) where the probability of selection from all over India is microscopic. Here In my post graduation I am exposed to recent developments in Modern era of Biotechnology which include the transfer of specific genes from one organism to another, human stem cell research, cloning, and the fusing of different types of cells to produce medical products such as monoclonal antibodies. By God’s grace, I could fulfill my parents wishes and will be awarded a Gold Medal for securing the highest CGPA of 9.58 in M.Sc. (Prev) examination at IIT Roorkee. Now I would like to serve the mankind by developing a cure for cancer which will prove to be a major breakthrough. My interest lies in the field of cancer biology based on Cancer Stem Cells, which are the most important target to develop a therapy against cancer. During my masters, guidance from the elite faculty increased my interest many fold and I presented a talk on Cancer Stem cells in our Department, which was highly applauded. Since then I became so fascinated with this field and started reading research papers on it and got acquainted with the diversity of this field.

Recently, as my seminar dissertation I presented on "Cancer Stem cells" and through literature review and many valuable discussions with my mentors and other professors at IITR, I am quite interested and I want to pursue my PhD in addressing the longing question of cancer therapy in a holistic way by working with Stem cell biology, using RNAi and Mouse genetics as the tools. During my post graduation with my dream of doing research work at the best place I started searching for a place with conducive environment. Finally I found your institute as one of the best in the world with world class facilities. It will be an honour to work under the guidance of such eminent scientists. I am confident that through my research in Molecular Biology under your institute will provide me with the best opportunity to become a productive member of society while making use of my intellectual talents in a career that I expect to be constantly challenging and fulfilling. I look forward to shaping my career in the labs of your institute.
