Answer Key Part I State of the Dead Marks: 40x1.5 = 60 1. When a person dies, the spirit returns to God and the body returns to the dust. What happens to the soul? a. Goes back to God b. Mixes with the air c. Sleeps till resurrection d. Goes back to earth Answer: the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice John 5:28,29 So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens [be] no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep. Job 14:12 2. What is the ‘spirit’ that goes back to God? a. The Consciousness b. The Inner Mind c. Breath of God d. Our Soul Answer: the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. Eccl 12:7 All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils Job 27:3 3. According to Mathew 10:28, when is a soul destroyed? a. Second Coming b. Executive Judgement c. When a person dies d. When a name is scribbled from the Book of life Answer: which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Matt 10:28 4. How will you explain the vision of ‘souls under the altar’ in Revelation asking God for vengeance (Revelation 6:9)? A. It is a figurative speech; it is not to be taken literally B. Altar of sacrifice refers to earth; souls under the altar are those restless beings buried in earth C. God momentarily awakens the souls to hear from them and comfort them D. It is symbolic just like the blood of Abel which cried out a. A & B are right

b. C & D are wrong c. B & D are right d. B & C are wrong Answer: The book of revelation is contained in symbols and everything needs to be interpreted by comparing with the other parts of the Bible Blood of Abel cries out: “And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.” (Genesis 4:10, KJV 1900) 5. How will you explain that the parable of Lazarus and the Rich man cannot be taken literally? A. Parables cannot be used to define doctrines B. There is no other reference to Abraham’s bosom in the Bible (at the mouth of two are three witnesses every word may be established) C. It includes many statements which are explicitly wrong according to Bible (Immediate reward at death, dead visiting the living) D. Jesus used the familiar belief of their time to teach a lesson a. A & B are right b. A & C are right c. A, B & C are right d. All the options are right Answer: In this parable Christ was meeting the people on their own ground. The doctrine of a conscious state of existence between death and the resurrection was held by many of those who were listening to Christ's words. The Saviour knew of their ideas, and He framed His parable so as to inculcate important truths through these preconceived opinions. He held up before His hearers a mirror wherein they might see themselves in their true relation to God. He used the prevailing opinion to convey the idea He wished to make prominent to all--that no man is valued for his possessions; for all he has belongs to him only as lent by the Lord. A misuse of these gifts will place him below the poorest and most afflicted man who loves God and trusts in Him. {COL 263.2} Christ desires His hearers to understand that it is impossible for men to secure the salvation of the soul after death. "Son," Abraham is represented as answering, "remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed; so that they which would pass from hence to you can not; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence." Thus Christ represented the hopelessness of looking for a second probation. This life is the only time given to man in which to prepare for eternity. {COL 263.3} 6. When the Sadducees questioned Jesus about resurrection, Jesus answered ‘God is the God of Living and not the dead; all live unto Him’ (when referring to Abraham). What does this mean? A. Abraham went to heaven at death B. God sees the future as present C. He who believes in God will never die D. When we die, we live as spirits in heaven a. A & B are wrong b. A & D are wrong c. B & C are wrong d. B & D are wrong Answer:A. Fasle – Self evident; B. True: “Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times the things that are not yet done, Saying, My counsel shall stand, And I will do all my pleasure:” (Isaiah 46:10, KJV 1900); C. True: “And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?” (John 11:26, KJV 1900); D. False: Self-explanatory 7. “Verily, I say unto you, today you will be with me in paradise” - Did the thief go to heaven with Jesus that day? A. No, Jesus Himself did not go heaven till resurrection Sunday B. No, this was a punctuation error as the Greek manuscripts lack any punctuations

C. Yes, because Jesus promised him D. No, the thief did not die that day (“Evening and the morning shall be one day”) a. A, B & D are correct b. A & B are correct c. C & D are wrong d. C & B are wrong Answer: Jesus did not promise the penitent thief that he should go with him, upon the day of their crucifixion, to Paradise; for he himself did not ascend to his Father until three days afterward. See John 20:17. But he declared unto him, "I say unto thee today--" meaning to impress the fact upon his mind, that at that time, while enduring ignominy and persecution, he had the power to save sinners. He was man's Advocate with the Father, having the same power as when he healed the sick and raised the dead to life; it was his divine right to promise that day to the repentant, believing malefactor, "Thou shalt be with me in Paradise." {3SP 157.2} 8. How did the spirit of Samuel conjured up by the witch of Endor know the future accurately? (1. Israelites will be defeated 2. Saul and his sons will die in battle 3. David will become the future king) a. Satan can predict future to an extent based on his vast knowledge and experience b. Satan can sometimes know the future with God’s special permission: c. Satan can absolutely control events to make his words come true (prince of this world): d. Satan only repeated what God had already said before Answer: b. False – Self evident c. False - "..., till thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will.” (Daniel 4:25, KJV 1900) d. False – And Samuel said unto him, The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou. 1 Sam 15:28 There are many who become restless when they cannot know the definite outcome of affairs. They cannot endure uncertainty, and in their impatience they refuse to wait to see the salvation of God. Apprehended evils drive them nearly distracted. They give way to their rebellious feelings, and run hither and thither in passionate grief, seeking intelligence concerning that which has not been revealed. If they would but trust in God, and watch unto prayer, they would find divine consolation. Their spirit would be calmed by communion with God. The weary and the heavy-laden would find rest unto their souls if they would only go to Jesus; but when they neglect the means that God has ordained for their comfort, and resort to other sources, hoping to learn what God has withheld, they commit the error of Saul, and thereby gain only a knowledge of evil. {PP 687.1} God is not pleased with this course, and has expressed it in the most explicit terms. This impatient haste to tear away the veil from the future reveals a lack of faith in God and leaves the soul open to the suggestions of the master deceiver. Satan leads men to consult those that have familiar spirits; and by revealing hidden things of the past, he inspires confidence in his power to foretell things to come. By experience gained through the long ages he can reason from cause to effect and often forecast, with a degree of accuracy, some of the future events of man's life. Thus he is enabled to deceive poor, misguided souls and bring them under his power and lead them captive at his will. {PP 687.2} 9. “The day you eat the fruit - you shall surely die” - Why Adam lived for 930 years when he was supposed to die that very day? a. One day in God’s sight equals a thousand years (2 Peter 3:8) b. Adam died spiritually that same day c. Jesus immediately stepped in as a sacrifice d. God punished the lamb in the place of Adam Answer: As soon as there was sin, there was a Saviour. Christ knew that He would have to suffer, yet He became man's substitute. As soon as Adam sinned, the Son of God presented Himself

as surety for the human race, with just as much power to avert the doom pronounced upon the guilty as when He died upon the cross of Calvary (Ibid., March 12, 1901). {1BC 1084.8} “And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.” (Revelation 13:8, KJV 1900) 10. Why do we bury the dead? a. We were taken from the earth b. It is difficult to resurrect if burnt c. To help them cross Jordan d. To contain their spirit from haunting

Answer: “In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.” (Genesis 3:19, KJV 1900) b. False - “But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26, KJV 1900); c. False – Self evident; d. False – Self evident. 11. How was the Witch of Endor able to bring back the spirit of Samuel? a. She had the ability to communicate with the dead b. Satan can bring up dead people at will c. God allowed just for that instance to prove Saul’s heart d. An evil spirit impersonated prophet Samuel Answer: When Saul inquired for Samuel, the Lord did not cause Samuel to appear to Saul. He saw nothing. Satan was not allowed to disturb the rest of Samuel in the grave, and bring him up in reality to the witch of Endor. God does not give Satan power to resurrect the dead. But Satan's angels assume the form of dead friends, and speak and act like them, that through professed dead friends he can the better carry on his work of deception. Satan knew Samuel well, and he knew how to represent him before the witch of Endor, and to utter correctly the fate of Saul and his sons. {CC 172.2} 12. The book of Hebrews talks about Abel’s blood speaking; how is this possible? a. His soul is under the altar giving blood a voice b. It is a figurative speech; not to be taken literally but to be interpreted with common sense c. The blood here refers to ‘soul’; God is able to able to communicate with dead souls d. Every martyr’s soul cries out till wholly avenged Answer: a. False – Self evident c. - False: “God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” (Matthew 22:32, KJV 1900) d. - False: “Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.” (Ecclesiastes 9:6, KJV 1900) 13. What did Jesus mean by “Whosoever believeth in me shall never die”? A. Jesus was referring to the second death B. Jesus was referring to the spiritual death C. By believing in Jesus, we partake of the Divine nature that cannot die D. When a Christian dies, only the body perishes - his soul continues to live in heaven a. A, B & C are right b. A & C are right c. B & D are right d. All are right Answer: A. True: Jesus refers to first death as “Sleep” - John 11:11

B. True: Spiritual life begins when Jesus in the person of the Holy Spirit is received into our hearts – John 6:63, and this is the divine nature that God imparts to us. Ellen White says, “Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. . . . It is the Spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life." The question comes home to us today, Are we eating the flesh and drinking the blood of the Son of God? It is by beholding the love of Christ, by drinking it in, by dwelling upon it, that we eat his flesh and drink his blood, becoming partakers of the divine nature. As we meditate upon the truth as it is in Jesus, it becomes more deeply impressed upon the soul. "The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life." It is through the ministry of the Word that the saints are to be perfected... The sermon may arouse the conscience, but the labor will be lost if the soul is left to settle down into the same state of indifference as before the words were spoken. The messenger is to speak as moved by the Spirit of God, and then he must come close to souls through personal labor, and guide the conscience, and fasten the truth in a sure place. The minister has a work to do in the home circle, teaching the members of the family concerning the great love wherewith God hath loved us, that they may know what it is to eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of God. When the heart of the messenger is warmed with the love of Jesus, he will have a message to give that will be as a savor of life unto life, or of death unto death. He will not feel that his responsibility is over when he leaves the desk; there is a God-appointed work for him to do as a careful, tender shepherd of the flock of God. If he is a heaven-sent messenger, the truth will be in him as fire shut up in his bones, and it will be continually shining to enlighten those who are ignorant of what Jesus is to them, and of what they are to Jesus He will teach them that the only way to reach the heaven above, is to cling to Jesus, day by day, hour by hour, mounting step by step to the heights of Christ. {PH118 11.3} C. True: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust – 2 Peter 1:4 He who had said, "I lay down my life, that I might take it again," came forth from the grave to life that was in Himself. Humanity died: divinity did not die. In His divinity, Christ possessed the power to break the bonds of death. He declares that He has life in Himself to quicken whom He will. . . {FLB 51.3} D. False – Self Evident 14. 1 Peter 4:6 talks about “Gospel preached to the dead”; what does this mean? a. This is a special opportunity for those who died without knowledge of Truth b. All of us were dead once - in sin c. God gives one more chance to everyone after death d. It refers to those who were resurrected through the ages (they got a second chance at life - ex. Lazarus) Answer: a. False - “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:” (Hebrews 9:27, KJV 1900) b. True - “And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;” (Ephesians 2:1, KJV 1900) c. False – Same reason as a. d. When the gospel was preached (if at all) they were alive and not dead, hence the verse cannot apply to those people who got a second chance at life 15. As He was walking by the way, a young ruler came running to Him, and kneeling, reverently saluted Him. “Good Master,” he said, “what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?” { COL 390.2} The ruler had addressed Christ merely as an honored rabbi, not discerning in Him the Son of God. The Saviour said, “Why callest thou Me good? There is none good but one, that is, God.” On what ground do you call Me good? God is the one good. Part III Practical Life Scenarios: 15 x 4 = 60 1. Your friend comes to you very excited. He tells you about how he met his mother at a séance (a place where they communicate with the dead people). She looked exactly like her and used the same words and gestures. He happily relates his conversations with his lost dead mom. His mom told him about heaven and God among many other things. You know that this is not his real mom but an evil spirit. He is sincere and genuinely believes this lie to be true. You say a prayer inside and start by telling him the Truth. To begin with, which relevant 4 verses will you quote to this brother?

Answer: Text Eccl 9:5-6, 10

Ps 115:17

Verse For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any [thing] that is done under the sun. Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do [it] with thy might; for [there is] no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest. The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence.

Reason Dead do not know anything

They do not praise God

Job 14:12, 21 Ps 146:4

Isa 38:1819 Ps 88:1012 Ps 30:9 Ps 6:5 Rev 16:14 Lev 20:27 Isa 8:19-20

So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens [be] no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep. His sons come to honour, and he knoweth [it] not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth [it] not of them. His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish. For the grave cannot praise thee, death can [not] celebrate thee: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth. The living, the living, he shall praise thee, as I [do] this day: the father to the children shall make known thy truth. Wilt thou shew wonders to the dead? shall the dead arise [and] praise thee? Selah. Shall thy lovingkindness be declared in the grave? [or] thy faithfulness in destruction? Shall thy wonders be known in the dark? and thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness? 2. You are working at IT company as a Human Resource manager. You are very friendly with your subordinates. One of them is a Roman Catholic. She notices that you are different from other Christians in many areas (like you don’t drink wine or smoke and you are a vegetarian). A few times, she had talked with you about God, Religion and Bible. The date is November 1, 2018. Next day is “All Souls Day”. As she is a Roman Catholic, she comes to you applying for leave to attend mass. In the course of your conversation, she asks you as to why you don’t pray for ‘your loved dead souls’? Which 4 relevant verses will you quote. (Note that the idea of “All Souls Day” is based on dead people suffering in purgatory after their death. And they need the prayers of the living to be released to heaven) Answer: Text Eccl 9:5-6, 10

Job 14:12, 21

Verse For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any [thing] that is done under the sun. Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do [it] with thy might; for [there is] no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest. So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens [be] no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep. His sons come to honour, and he knoweth [it] not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth [it] not of them.

Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. 3. Your teenage daughter suddenly fell sick with cough and fever. In spite of taking treatment, the condition worsened daily. Soon, she was admitted at hospital and moved to ICU. All this happened in three days you don’t know what to make out of it. The doctors tell you that she is diagnosed with swine flu and her lungs are currently very bad. Her chances of survival remain low. As a mother, you are devastated. You are continuously praying and waiting outside the ICU. Suddenly one of the doctors come out looking for you. He says how your daughter suddenly collapsed and they are currently trying their best to resuscitate her back to life. You break down in prayer before God. God hears your prayers and in a turn of a series of miracles (as the doctors called it), your daughter is back in your arms ready for discharge after 2 weeks. She remembers the events which had happened when her heart failed and she relates them to you. She tells of how she went to heaven and saw Jesus. She saw the angels and ate the heavenly food. Then Jesus told her that she must go back to earth and tell everyone that Sabbath is changed to Sunday. She is very confused with this experience. 4. One of your close Adventist friends at school has died in a tragic road traffic accident. He was a loving friend and his life was an excellent Christian example to friends. The news came as a shock to all your classmates. With tears, everyone attended the funeral service. The preacher mentioned how God is in control of everything and has a purpose for those who love Him. He went on to say that the brother is ‘sleeping’ and safe in the heart of God. When Jesus comes again, He will sound the trumpet and all dead sleeping saints will resurrect to eternal life. Your other Christian classmates are amazed at this new teaching. Later they come to you (as you belong to the same Adventist church) and ask you to explain what the pastor meant by ‘sleeping’ and what happened at ‘resurrection’? 10. You have been taking a Bible study on State of the Dead for one of your friends who is a Methodist. He is amazed at all the verses that you have been showing him. He decides to bring his church pastor along, intending that with his immense Bible knowledge the pastor can fix things up. So a friendly debate/Bible study was setup. The pastor starts off by saying that “Souls are immortal and they don’t die”. He goes on to quote that ‘spirit returns to God at death’, ‘only body and not soul can be destroyed by man’, ‘souls are either in Abraham’s bosom or eternal hell’, ‘souls are even now crying under the altar’. The Methodist pastor sits down satisfied with his arguments and rests his case. Now it is your turn to speak. Which 4 relevant verses will you quote from Scripture to prove that ‘Souls are mortal’ and can die? Answer: Text 1Tim 6:15-16

The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence. What profit [is there] in my blood, when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise thee? shall it declare thy truth? For in death [there is] no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks?

Reason God strictly forbids all communication with dead Dead no not know anything. They don’t have any feelings or memory Dead do not praise God Dead don’t awake – hence can’t praise God Dead can’t think – hence can’t praise Dead can’t praise Ibid

13. You are taking Bible study on State of the Dead for one of your Pentecost friends. She is confused about so many entities like ‘spirit’, ‘soul’, ‘breath’, ‘life’, ‘body’, ‘conscience’, ‘mind’. You need to show her from the Bible that only three definitive terms are used to describe life and death, namely - ‘spirit’, ‘soul’ and ‘body’. Which four verses talking about creation and death will you use to establish the point? Answer: Text Gen 2:7

Eccl 12:7

Verse And the LORD God formed man [of] the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

Reason Dust, Spirit and soul Dust goes back to earth and spirit returns to God

Jas 2:26

For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Job 27:3

All the while my breath [is] in me, and the spirit of God [is] in my nostrils;

Ps 104:29

Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled: thou takest away their breath, they die, and return to their dust.

Eccl 3:19-21

For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all [is] vanity. All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again. Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?

Body and Spirit together makes a living person Spirit is another word for breath When God takes away breath, creatures die Man die like animals

14. You and your friend are engineering students at a prestigious college in Delhi. Both of you are staying at hostel. Your friend regularly attends church but lacks a solid knowledge of the Truth. One day, he invites you over to his room to watch Harry Potter together. Harry Potter talks about familiar spirits, witchcraft, wizardry and so forth… Which four verses you will use to say that witchcraft is prohibited strongly in the Bible? Answer: Text Isa 8:19-20

Lev 20:27 Matt 24:24

Rev 16:14 Gen 3:4

Verse And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead? To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, [it is] because [there is] no light in them. A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood [shall be] upon them. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if [it were] possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, [which] go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die.

Reason Witchcraft is strongly forbidden

Witchcraft is punishable with death False Christs and false prophets will do many miracles Spirits of devils work miracles Satan’s lie is the foundation of witchcraft

15. One of your friends is having an unplanned pregnancy and has doubts about abortion. Which 4 verses can you show her to state that life belongs to God and only He can end it? Answer: Text

Verse

Reason

Ezek 18:4 Eccl 8:8

Gen 2:7

Eccl 12:7 Job 27:3 Ps 104:29 Matt 10:28

Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die. [There is] no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither [hath he] power in the day of death: and [there is] no discharge in [that] war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it. And the LORD God formed man [of] the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. All the while my breath [is] in me, and the spirit of God [is] in my nostrils; Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled: thou takest away their breath, they die, and return to their dust. And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Prepared by
