Internship Opportunities at State Bank of Pakistan

Introduction

State Bank of Pakistan, the central bank of the country, was established in July 1948 i.e., within one year after Pakistan gained independence. Being the central Bank, it regulates the monetary and credit system of the country to foster its growth in the best national interest with a view to secure monetary stability and fuller utilization of the country’s productive resources. The Bank’s operation also includes preserving the value as well as maintaining stability in the banking system. In its continued endeavor to promote monetary and financial stability to achieve a sustained and equitable growth the Bank holds vast experience of exercising various monetary controls spread over more than five decades which interalia include transformation from a directed monetary regime to market based monetary management as well as introduction of current account convertibility of the BOP. For more information please see our website: www.sbp.org.pk Internship Objective The main objective of offering internship to students from foreign universities is to provide them an opportunity to work with Bank’s Research, Monetary Policy and Economic Analysis Departments to explore economic and financial system policy issues related to Pakistan. The Project The interns will be working in the above departments of SBP where they will be required to do empirical work mainly on financial sector, international finance, international trade and exchange rate issues. Initially the plan is to offer internship on topics more relevant to the on-going sustainable development program of Pakistan. While selecting the topics for research, the interns’ own preferences and competencies will be considered Duration 8 to 10 weeks (Flexible depending on time needed to complete the assignment). Requirement Students pursuing Masters degree or senior students (final year) of Bachelors honors program in the discipline of economics from the prescribed universities (list attached). Further, the students should have advance knowledge of econometrics so as to meet the pre-requisite of doing empirical research work and feel comfortable while interacting with counterparts at SBP Compensation and Support State Bank of Pakistan will pay a monthly stipend equal to US$700 together with free accommodation. Interns will also be provided transport form their residence to Bank and back. Economy class return airfare will be paid by State Bank of Pakistan to the interns for travel between their country and Karachi and back after successful completion of internship project. STUDENTS LOAN SCHEME Pursuant to the announcement made by the Federal Finance Minister in his 2001-2002 budget speech, a STUDENTS LOAN SCHEME (SLS) for Education has been launched by the Government of Pakistan in collaboration with major commercial banks of Pakistan (NBP, HBL, UBL, MCB & ABL). Under the Scheme, financial assistance will be provided by way of Interest Free Loans to the meritorious students who do not have adequate financial means to pursue studies in Scientific, Technical and Professional education within Pakistan. The Scheme will be administered by a high power committee comprising Deputy Governor, State Bank of Pakistan, Presidents of the commercial banks and Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Government of Pakistan.



The objective of the Students Loan Scheme is to provide financial assistance to the meritorious students of insufficient means who have obtained 70% marks in the last public examination and are unable to pursue their studies within Pakistan due to financial difficulties.



Loans under the scheme shall be granted to students who are nationals of Pakistan including Northern Areas, Federally Administered Tribal Areas and Azad Jammu and Kashmir and of age not exceeding 20 years for graduation, 30 years for post-graduation and 35 years for Ph.D.



Students Loan Scheme will be allowed only to those students who have been admitted to an approved Universities/affiliated Colleges.

The amount of loans under the Scheme shall cover the cost of tuition fee, books and boarding for the entire duration. The amount of loan shall be disbursed directly to the concerned Universities/Colleges. The student has to provide evidence of financial standing of the parents/guardian who is supporting him or her. Candidates desirous of availing loan under the Scheme may apply on prescribed Form for financial assistance subject to he or she has got admission on merit through normal procedure in the Colleges/Universities afore-mentioned.
