HONORING RICHMOND CITY SHERIFF C.T. WOODY On November 8, 2005, C.T. Woody was elected Sheriff (D) for the City of Richmond, Virginia. This momentous event carried the responsibility of maintaining security of the second largest jail in the Commonwealth of Virginia, with approximately 450 deputies and a population of over 1,500 residents. A key component in Sheriff Woody’s administration involves incorporating community-based and faith-based partnerships into Richmond City Jail educational and recovery programming. In addition to a new inmate vocational training program made possible through a partnership with numerous pastors and the Richmond Technical Center, Sheriff Woody’s support of the Richmond Sheriff’s Chaplaincy Program now offers faith-based programming through 14 different denominations and over 75 congregations and individual volunteers. Sheriff Woody brings almost four decades of broad law enforcement experience gained in the City of Richmond to the Jail. Upon his 2002 retirement from the Richmond Police Department, Woody led investigations for the Office of the Commonwealth Attorney. Woody instructed at the College of William and Mary Law School for the Department of Criminal Justice and Commonwealth Attorneys Conference and was a certified instructor for the Richmond Police Department Training Academy.

On behalf of McShin, Virginia’s largest and fastest growing, full service nongovernment Recovery Community Organization (RCO), we would like to thank you for your continued support of our mission.

CO-HOSTED BY STATE SENATOR EMMETT HANGER Emmett Hanger was the first Republican to be elected to a countywide office in Augusta County since reconstruction. In 1995, Emmett ran for VA State Senate. He was re-elected in 1999 & again in 2003, receiving over 72% of the vote. Senator Hanger is now a member of the Agriculture, Conservation & Natural Resources, Finance, Local Government & Rules Committees as well as the Rehabilitation & Social Services Committees where he serves as chair. Emmett joined the Augusta County Republican Committee 27 years ago & has been involved in building the party ever since.

KEY-NOTE SPEAKER President Obama’s nominee for Deputy Drug Czar, A.THOMAS MCLELLAN, PH.D. A. Thomas McLellan, Ph.D., is a Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania and co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Treatment Research Institute (TRI), a not-for-profit research and development institute in Philadelphia. McLellan is nationally and internationally recognized for his more than 30 years of addiction research. In 1992, he cofounded TRI as an independent translational center to adapt and engineer promising scientific findings into useful products and services that could be broadly used throughout the field. Through TRI, McLellan's work has promoted better understanding of addiction as a chronic illness that must be continually monitored and managed, much like other chronically relapsing medical conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. Helping medical doctors recognize and respond to symptoms of alcohol and drug use in patients is another thrust of TRI’s work under McLellan. In 2008, McLellan launched a TRI division dedicated to introducing science-based products and services for practitioners and policy makers. McLellan has published more than 400 articles and chapters on addiction research and serves as Editor in Chief of the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment. Among McLellan's many honors and awards are the Life Achievement Award of the American Society of Addiction Medicine in 2003 and the 2002 award for Distinguished Contribution in Addiction Medicine from the Swedish Medical Association.

We would like to thank Sheriff Woody for allowing a Recovery Community Organization to deliver authentic Peer Recovery Support Services (PRSS) to individuals in the Richmond City Jail. Sheriff Woody is a great example that many people can follow.
