Vision
 To
progressively
improve
the
level
of
performance
in
various
 sports,
over
the
next
6
years,
one
at
a
8me.

Mission

 To
increase
India’s
medal
tally
in
2016
Olympics
to
>100.

•  The
IPL
is
predicted
to
bring
the
BCCI
an
income
of
approximately
$1.6
 billion,
over
a
period
of
five
to
ten
years.
 •  The
IPL
signed
up
Kingfisher
Airlines
as
the
official
umpire
partner
for
the
 series
in
a
Rs.
1.06
billion
deal.
 •
Sony
Entertainment
Television
signed
a
contract
with
BCCI
agreeing
to
pay
 a
staggering
Rs.
87
billion
for
10
years.
 •  DLF
Group
has
paid
US
$50
million
to
be
the
Jtle
sponsor
of
the
 tournament
for
5
years

The POINT •  More
than
a
sporJng
success,
IPL
is
a
Business
success.
 •  Is
it
making
some
people
very
rich?
Yes,
However
its
bringing
much
 needed
money
into
the
sport.
 •  Young
players
are
benefiRng
economically
and
in
terms
of
exposure
and
 improved
game
play.

The Idea “Expand
IPL
to
include
more
sports.”
 •  Till
2016,
IPL
will
incorporate
a
new
sport
every
year.
 •  ExisJng
teams
will
remain,
However
instead
of
just
“Delhi
DareDevils”
on
 the
cricket
field,
there
will
also
be
a
“Delhi
DareDevils”
on
the
Football
 field.
 •  Thus
Delhi
would
be
represented
by
“Delhi
DareDevils”
in
Cricket,
Football,
 AthleJcs,
Archery
etcetera.

 •  The
Economics
of
the
new
sports
will
be
on
the
lines
of
the
present
 format.

Sounds Complicated? Untying the knots
 •  Sports
Commissioner
of
India

–  A
new
post
will
be
created,
he
will
be
the
commissioner
of
IPL
possibly
Mr.
 Lalit
Modi.
 –  Will
control
all
the
sports
being
played
under
IPL.

•  Rules
of
the
Game:

–  Every
team
will
sJll
have
foreign
players
 •  •  •  •

To
raise
the
standard
of
game
play.
 To
provide
exposure
to
Indian
players
 To

aYract
viewership
and
publicity.
 There
will
be
a
Cap
on
maximum
number
of
foreign
players
in
a
team.

–  Every
sport
will
be
played
once
a
year.
 –  Teams
with
highest
cumulaJve
score
in
all
sports
will
be
adjudged
the
 winner.
 –  Ground

Tickets
for
new
sports
will
be
very
cheap
to
start
with,
so
as
to
 aYract
audience.
 –  More
CiJes
will
be
added
to
increase
the
number
of
teams.

•  Team
Owners
 –  Will
expand
their
porZolio
to
include
more
sports
under
their
team
 name.
 –  Can
invite
more
businessmen
as
Co‐Team
Owner’s.
 –  They
will
spend
on

 •  Acquiring
rights
of
the
new
teams
formed.
 •  Acquiring
Players
for
their
teams.

–  What’s
in
it
for
them
 •  They
will
get
Tax
Rebates
on
their
investment
courtesy
the
government.
 •  They
enhance
their
Brand
presence
across
the
country.
 •  Their
revenue
stream
from
IPL
increases.

–  If
they
do
not
want
to
include
more
sports
under
them,
then
the
 teams
for
new
sports
will
be
sold
to
new
owners
under
the
same
team
 name.

•  Sponsors:
 –  Sponsorship
rights
will
be
proporJonal
to
the
popularity
of
the
sports.
 –  Will
be
much
less
than
those
for
cricket
in
order
to
kick
start
the
new
 format.

•  Players:
 –  Will
benefit
like
their
counterparts
in
cricket.
 –  Will
get
a
chance
to
play
for
country
based
on
their
performance
in
the
 league.
 –  Will
get
exposure
to
world
class
players.
 –  Will
get
recogniJon
and
fame.
 Increased
AirJme
 on
Television
for
 the
players

Improved
 Performance

Systemic
 improvement
in
 performance
of
 Sportspersons.
 IncenJve
to
 perform
on
 the
field

Enhanced
 Visibility
in
 the
Media

Endorsement
 opportuniJes
 Rise
in
the
 Income
Level
 of
Players

•  Consumer:

–  Will
get
a
chance
to
watch
new
sports
and
some
of
the
best
players
of
the
 world
in
acJon.
 –  Will
be
inclined
to
give
the
“new”
IPL
a
try
aaer
the
success
of
the
present
IPL.
 –  Widespread
interest
and
public
opinion
will
lead
to
criJcal
scruJny
of
every
 decision
made
by
sporJng
authoriJes,
thus
forcing
them
to
self
correct.

•  Media:
 –  Presently
a
30
minute
sport
show
contains
20
minutes
of
cricket
and
10
 minutes
of
everything
else.
 –  5
page
sports
secJon
has
larger
than
life
image
of
Sachin
Tendulkar
on
one
 page
and
all
the
other
sports
crammed
into
a
single
page.

This
has
to
change
 –  Government
should
impose
guidelines
which
direct
equal
coverage
of
all
 sporJng
events.
 –  Sounds
DogmaJc,
however
if
implemented
properly
it
will
enhance
the
 presence
of
other
sports
in
people’s
mind
subconsciously.
 –  However
once
the
“New
Avtar”
of
IPL
is
a
Hit,
disparity
in
media
coverage
will
 not
be
an
issue.

Entertainment or Sport?
 •  Nobody
knows
what
worked
for
IPL,
was
it
the
3
hour
packaged
 entertainment
or
the
quality
of
Cricket.
 –  However
nobody
can
refute
the
fact
that

“the
viewership
of
cricket
increased
because
of
the
“Entertainment”
factor.”

•  One
thing
is
very
clear
 “People
cannot
be
forced
to
like
a
sport,
however
if
the
sport
is
packaged
as
a
 “Family
ouDng”
or
an
entertainment
extravaganza
then
it
can
aFract
a
larger
 audience
and
thus
begin
to
be
appreciated”

•  Thus
the
new
IPL,
will
gradually
change
the
percepJon
about
 various
sports,
and
will
make
them
 –  –  –  –

InteresJng
 Entertaining
 Economically
viable
for
all
the
stakeholders.
 India’s
strengths.

•  Some
AssumpLons
 –  BCCI
might
have
to
give
up
control
of
IPL
or
will
have
to
make
it
into
a
 separate
organizaJon.
 –  Sports
commissioner
of
India
will
be
appointed
by
members
of
the
IPL
 Governing
Body.
 –  Members
of
IPL
governing
body
will
be
eminent
sportspersons
and
 industrialists
and
bureaucrats.
 –  Sports
commissioner
of
India
will
be
a
Government
post.
 –  Conflict
of
Interest
between
IPL
and
other
sporJng
authoriJes
will
be
 sorted
out
by
the
government
in
favor
of
IPL.

•  Concluding
Thoughts

Cricket
might
actually
be
the
savior
of
all
other
 sports
in
India.
