Why Speech Class? Speeches are a way to communicate clearly and purposefully to a large group of people. Types of speakers = teachers, coaches, company bosses, presidents, politicians, etc -those who give great speeches are those that are prepared, organized, articulate, and maintain eye contact. POAM!
POAM Preparation 1. Carefully select and research your topic 2. Practice your speech with a real audience, and adjust for timing Organization 3. Be sure you have a clear beginning, middle, and end 4. Order your ideas in a clear, logical way Articulation 5. Pronounce words carefully and correctly 6. Avoid monotone and moderate your pacing (speed) 7. Remember your target audience Maintaining eye contact 8. Look up often at your audience
POAM Preparation 1) go to the library, do research on the internet, do interviews, take surveys 2) Write it out. Make at least 2 ruff drafts. 3) Practice on someone before you give actual speech
Organization 1) Be clear and orderly 2) Use words like firstly, secondly, lastly 3) Make sure to state your main idea clearly
POAM Articulation 1) Speak slowly, most people rush 2) don’t use words like “um” “ah” or “and” too much
Maintain eye contact 1) Look at your audience. Make it personal. 2) Don’t look down or read speech. 3) Tip : make a star pattern
Opinions Opinion = –noun 1. a belief or judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty. 2. a personal view, attitude, or appraisal.
Opinion Speech Goals = to explain your view to share your reasoning try and persuade Do’s = Do use personal experience Do use first person “I” Give at least 3 reasons Don’ts = Talk about other people’s opinions
Homework Topic : Marriage 1) Write a 1 minute opinion essay about marriage for Friday. 2) email me your ruff draft by Wednesday.
